SeanMacGabhann
Similar to the Music Room but for news reallyA link to a newspaper article you found amusing/ interesting/worth sharing/well written - it doesn't have to be big serious issuesI'll kick off with Simon Hattenstones article this morning which reflects a similar unease I have with football (even though he is a Man City fan and therefore already used to pain and suffering)http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2007/07/11/why_thaksins_billions_are_a_fa.html Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1054-i-heard-the-news-today-oh-boy/ Share on other sites
georgia
This is on the BBC News website today...A teacher flew home to Wales from Toronto in Canada for a wedding, only to discover he was one year early. Dave Barclay, 34, mistakenly thought Dave Best was marrying on 6 July 2007 after he e-mailed him at the start of the year and started making plans. It was only when he arrived back at his mother's in Wenvoe near Cardiff he realised he had travelled 4,000 miles for a wedding 12 months away. "I am a year early - yeah, my mates are loving it, aren't they," he said. Easy mistake to make... Fear 'n boozin
As I drank far to much wine last night/this morning and can barely see the computer screen, let alone work, I'm going to spend my time helping out humanity by classifying galaxies. Cool huh :)It turns out that my computer isn't quite so happy at the idea of me contributing soooo much to the greater good. Grrrrrrr. Jah Lush
Top story of the day for me is the bungling officials in Stoke-On-Trent for failing to confirm banning powers in time so people are still happily smoking away in the town's 400 pubs and clubs. :)) And will be able to do so until August 1st. mockney piers
well this from the nation about what it's like on the ground in Iraq based on interviews with American veterans.Warning it's very harrowing reading, and needless to say it's not about winning hearts and minds.http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070730/hedges Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1054-i-heard-the-news-today-oh-boy/#findComment-27520 Share on other sites
SeanMacGabhann
Nice one fear - first I'd heard about it since all of the predictable headlines this morningIt reminded me of one of the events that started me on my political awakening - I was probably about 12, in smalltown Ireland and was allowed to stay up late for some reason or other.I knew that this was an hour when political programmes were on telly (politics! bah! boring! was my motto) but they were all called things like" The Matters of The Day", or "Politics Tonight or "Jays You Wouldn't BELIEVE What Happened in The Dail Today!" so I knew what to avoidThought I was on to a safe bet with a show called Slants - which turned out to be a political show BUT from a satirical angle and explained to me how spin was put on everything. And I never saw things the same way again....Ok not a great story but when I heard about the strop this morning I automatically assumed "bet that didn't happen"Then again, that's an attitude that has got me into trouble on some threads..... Fear 'n boozin
The Windy banged on about it too (always one to 'borrow' from others is the Windy - not that it's such a bad thing, at least it gets reported to a wider slighty larger audience).Front page though:http://www.independent.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00251/p1-120707_251940b.jpg Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1054-i-heard-the-news-today-oh-boy/#findComment-27535 Share on other sites
