Yes .. You can take it or leave it.. More choice for some..

... Restricted choice for others...

... being outpriced by most new outlets in the area.

Marks and Spencer put in an application for a licence to sell alcohol from 6am to midnight. They have now amended their application so that the sale of alcohol is from 8am each day. The licence has been granted but with a number of conditions agreed between the applicant and the police. They are as follows:-

That a CCTV system be installed at the premises and maintained in good working order and be continually recording at all times the premises are in use under licence. The CCTV system must be capable of capturing a clear facial image of every person who enters the premises. All CCTV images must be kept for a period of 31 days and made immediately available to officers and the police.

All staff are to be trained in their responsibilities under the 2003 Licensing Act and training records are to be kept and updated every 12 months and shall be made available to officers and the police.

No beers or ciders in single cans, bottles or multi packs with an ABV exceeding 7.5% will be displayed or sold from the premises, unless written authority is obtained from the Police Licensing Unit.

Charlie,

Oh, so they are going to be selling alcohol after all. I recall someone asking about this months ago and being advised alcohol would not be sold. How will this now affect the opening and operating hours..especially at weekends, will these be extended beyond what was agreed in the earlier application? Does this mean M&S can stay open 8 am until 12 pm every day if the week, including weekends?

The Sainsbury's Local store at 357 Lordship Lane is licensed to sell alcohol for consumption off the premises from 6.00 to 00.00 seven days a week. There are a number of other shops in Lordship Lane that have 24 hour alcohol licenses. They can all be revoked if there are serious breaches of the license conditions.

I hope this is helpful.

    • Last time I looked they didn't have a shredder, and when I enquired I was told that they were in the process of getting new ones (I'm not sure why they couldn't have kept the old ones till they got the new ones - maybe they were broken). I was told to keep looking on their website. Hopefully it will be soon as I presently have masses of stuff I need to shred, and other methods of confidential disposal like soaking in the bath don't appeal at the moment!
    • Many moons ago, ED  forum members used to meet up on a regular basis (I think monthly) in a different local.pub each time to get to know each other and to have a chat over a drink. To help people like me who are rubbish at remembering names and faces, labels were provided! A space was reserved in the pub each time. If anyone would be interested in this (or else thinks it's a very bad idea!) , please either post on here or PM me. The ED demographic has greatly changed, and many of those original forum members have moved out of the area, so possibly this may no longer work for various reasons. My partner Nygel and I are happy to arrange the first one, but hopefully other people might step up to help after that, as we couldn't undertake to arrange them all on a regular basis, though we are  happy to take turns.
    • Just wanted to remind everyone of this facility.  It is in the Leisure Centre foyer and so accessible during the normal opening hours.  I've just used the SDS drill (which comes with drill and chisel bits and eye & ear protection) for under a tenner for a day.  Equipment was in very good nick and process was more easier and more convenient that traditional hire shop. https://libraryofthings.co.uk/
    • I would have asked, but I forgot! Just checked, and not only is today's jab not on there, which perhaps isn't surprising, but nor is last year's 😮
