Hi there

I'm just wondering what 2nd pram people would recommend please? I get the impression that a lot of people go for McLaren?? And if so, which model would you recommend?

Also, what age did you start using it (when baby is sitting up??) and did you find it better than the first pram you had?

Any advice much appreciated, many thanks in advance x

I have a 5 month old baby and bought a Mamas & Papas Nipi: http://www.mamasandpapas.com/range/nipi/2411/

I did alot of research and this buggy scored one of the highest in its class for Which? - I think even better than McLaren.

It hasn't let me down at all and I would say its probably the best bargain I've bought since giving birth as its currently reduced to ?49. You do need to get the accesory pack as well as that contains a rain cover but its only ?15.

The buggy lies almost flat so I think you can use it for 3 months +. I also have a bugaboo and never use it now as I am constantly on and off buses and the Nipi is so easy and light in comparison.

Highly recommended - hope that helps!!

Generally the Maclarens are a good pick as they're light while still good quality (they don't fall apart). We have the Techno XT which is good but it's the heavier among the Maclarens. I'd go for a model with a weight somewhere in the middle range of the Maclarens (the lighter ones may be a bit flimsy, not sure).

And yes I guess it's a good idea to keep those little hands far away when you're folding the buggy... I can picture some really nasty accidents with the Phil and Teds that I have too though so it's just a matter of market volume and therefore likelihood of enough accidents hitting the press... i.e. don't assume other buggies are fine to fold with your baby/toddler right next to you.

The bee is nice and light though yes? I got a fold up one (maclaren quest) as i have a big icandy pram/pushchair that is a nightmare to fold up but lovely and comfy for bubs. Suppose depends what you think you'll use it for - like we find it is good to have a light one folded in the boot of the car so you don't really have to worry about transporting the pram when you go somewhere, and for holidays.....but if the bee is nice and light and foldy anyway....

But it's not just about need is it?!? Buggy's are the new handbags.....

Re Maclarens, we bought the Triumph when my son was 9 months ish, mainly because it was cheaper and apparently foldable with one hand - not that I've ever actually tried. It's fine: compact, lightweight, but I look wistfully at Quests/Technos because my main gripe with the Triumph is the back rest of the seat: you can have it either up ish or down ish and is done with a kind of belt round the back, rather than an enjoyable clicky system, and he looks slumped however I do it.

Sorry that my words are very untechnical.

I have a bugaboo Chameleon which I have been using since birth....but now she is 4 months I have recently bought a Maclaren Techno XT which stays in the boot of the car to be used for weekends away/when using the car and on the plane...I will continue using my lovely bugaboo locally.

The Maclaren is very easy to use and although not super light I am easily able to lift and carry it and put it in the boot myself - unlike the Bugaboo. It also reclines really easily to mid and flat and upright positions so she has been sleeping fine in it.

I bought it on ebay for 73 pounds including the cosy muff (total new would be 205 - 240 inc the muff) - I searched for people selling within 10 miles and bought it from a mum in Penge (so I could collect and view)....she had only used it as a second buggy too so was in good condition

Hope that helps - there are sometimes people selling Maclarens on here too

KO,

Whatever 2nd pram you get, check how easily you can fold it down i.e. if you go to a restaurant and have to prop it up in a corner or under a table. Does it go in the boot of your car?. We ended up having 2 buggies - one of which was too long to go into a car boot and impossible to fold down single handed but was very sturdy for walking around and hanging shopping bags from the handles. We had a smaller light weight buggy (a MacLaren) which we took on holidays, days out and eating out.

many thanks for the replies. i love my bugaboo bee and find it easy to get around shops and on and off buses, so i think i will probably continue to use that. but would love to have a 2nd pram to fit in the car boot - that sounds a great idea! great if just nipping out in the car and saves the trouble of folding the bee, taking it down the street to wherever i managed to park the car and then getting baby, and then doing the same all over again when i get home!

We just had the Bee til it became a squash at just over a year, now use a MacLaren Quest, don't really like it, it feels rattly, but think that is because it is a lightweight pushchair rather than a (more comfy, more space for shopping) pram, not 'cos there is anything wrong with it.

The potential finger-slicing problem does apply to UK MacLarens, but MacLaren will send out hinge cover thingys on request.

Hi Ko, I still use my Bee for my 16 month old, and it is used occasionally for my nephew (2) and niece(3 1/2). I commute to Bloomsbury with it everyday and have never seen a buggy I'd rather have.

You may find you want a really simple buggy when your little one is walking most places but needs a buggy occasionally to flop into- probably not for a while yet.

I have a MacLaren Quest for commuting/trips away and it's great. Easy to fit on the bus, can be folded with baby in the other hand and leaves lots of boot space. It does feel a bit rattly and I wish it was parent facing. Still use Bugaboo Cameleon locally for 13 month old but it's a pain to fold up.

    • Nope, not "complaining or moaning", stating an opinion. Tax - yes we are taxed to the hilt, the threshold is £12570, Govts not increasing this means more and more people get dragged into paying tax. HMRC are a joke, even if you're below that figure they take tax that has to be claimed back as its wrongly deducted.  Inflation is supposedly dropping, the reality in the shops is the total opposite, week on week almost, prices increase, utilities increase etc. I don't want to live under a left wing govt, if you do, suggest you try living in Russia.
    • But only the first g in garage is a "hard" g? The second one is a "soft" g whether you pronounce it "j" or (not sure how to write it, but even softer, like a cross between "sh" and "j"?) So surely Malumbu's hard g in Farage would be like the first g in garage, not the second one? I can't believe I am wasting my time writing this irrelevant drivel 🤣
    • I'm currently on a little mission to recommend Jovaner, who I've recommended here before, and who has done lots of work for me over the years. The scope of works he can take on, and his skills, have expanded over the years. He now comfortably undertakes full house renovations, including bathroom and kitchen fit outs (he is currently doing my bathroom as we speak). He is a talented carpenter, tiler, plumber and decorator, and has the highest standards of any tradesperson I've every worked with (have a look at the kitchens and furniture that my company - West & Reid - makes for a frame of reference for my standards, if I say so myself! 🙂 Jovaner always meets and goes beyond my expectations. There aren't many people as multi-talented as him, and very few with such high standards. He is the first person I turn to when I need work done in my house - I've waited 6 months for him to do my bathroom, as he was the only person I wanted to do it. I wouldn't hesitate to get him to renovate my entire house if it needed it!  He is also the hardest working person I have ever met, and completely trustworthy, as I am sure multiple other recommendations on this site will attest to.  If you are wondering why I'm going to so much trouble to recommend him it's simply because he's so good, and every time he does a new job I am reminded of how good he is. But he constantly undersells himself, underprices his work, and has such attention to detail and such high standards that he rarely earns what he deserves for the work he does!  His number is 07429171373.  Happy to chat to anyone who wants the recommendation in person (07745553232) Malcolm
