TE44
Just want to let people know, I got a phone call on Monday from someone saying they were from Talk Talk, my provider, they said there was a problemwith my router, they wanted me to go on to thecomputer, sayin they would guide me to do a check.I said it would be better they phone later to speak to my son. I received another call on Wednesday saying the same thing.again I asked ifthey could phone back, I was cut off. I've justreceived a call claiming to be from BT, saying my internet will be cut off today as someone hasbeen hacking my computer, they asked if I could turn ths computer on and they would go through some things with me, I said no, then they saidthey'd have to report it internationally thsn cutoff. I phoned my son at work, who immediately goton to talk talk, they said no phone calls had been made. And no way would BT have phoned.Don't know if this anything to do with Talk Talkgetting hacked, but felt I should let people kno. DulwichFox
Sounds like a typical scam to gain access to your P.C. Similar to The Windows Scam.. .. You are told there is a problem. (There isn't) Typically you are guided to a Website and asked to click on a link. This link would download a program that would allow the scammer acces to your P.C. You will be asked to wait while they 'Cleaned' your system. and you will be asked to pay a fee and give your credit card detais. Under no circumstances follow their instructions or click on any links.. ... just end the call. Blah Blah
I'm pretty sutre the only way any supplier knows if there's a problem with your router is if you report one. Sadly people do fall for this though. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/103152-scam-calls-talk-talk-and-bt/#findComment-988803 Share on other sites

TheArtfulDogger
I do muck them around.First thing is to pretend to be old and hard of hearing, then let them rant on about what to do, pretend to do it but make sure you get them to spell everything out slowly and loudly, tell them you are having problems doing what they say but after a bit tell the, "done" to each step (please don't actually do it) it's also fun to make the occasional mistake and when they ask what you can see on the screen tell them you have the wrong glasses on ... The longer you keep them on the line the more fun you can have with them... At an appropriate point, ask them to hold for a second then say that your son has just walked in from his job as head of Internet security at Mocrosofts fraud team and as you are having so much problem doing what they say can they talk to him.... It's at this point they tend to hang up ! Works for me and I love playing the doddering old codger 🤓 Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/103152-scam-calls-talk-talk-and-bt/#findComment-988875 Share on other sites
TE44
Ha ha, it seems I'm the only one that didn't knowabout this scam, even my brother who's never hada computer gets calls. When I checked my calls there was eleven calls. You'd think the people doing this would be traceable. DulwichFox
Basically they will get you to type 'eventvwr' Event Viewer in the serch box after clicking start button. http://imar.spaanjaars.com/Images/Articles/CreateEventLogs/CustomEventLog.gif They will tell you that the errors are Viruses.. They are not viruses and these Errors are normal and nothing to worry about.DulwichFox Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/103152-scam-calls-talk-talk-and-bt/#findComment-988886 Share on other sites

ianr
There was a more subtle one covered on R4 You And Yours this morning. The scammers quietly hack into a small business's email account. When a customer is actually expecting or about to pay an invoice, they send their own version or follow-up. The only thing that's different and not genuine may be the bank acount details for receipt of funds, and possibly the fact that they're trying to hurry you into payment. The programme's put up their own anti-scam guide at http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zxq8frd. ponderwoman
Its worth dialling 1471 to see if their number is available then report it to TalkTalk (tedious) who will follow it up and block it. If you are a TalkTalk customer then ask for the code so you can block the last number you received even if it is a withheld number,I've blocked 9 of these calls. The scammers all have my account number but are otherwise rubbish at their job and get rapidly crabby, demanding to know why I am wasting their time when they realise I have moved on to messing with them. Pointing out it was them who phoned me doesn't cheer them up. cheers me up as my challenge for the day to see how long I can divert them from more vulnerable prey. TE44
There was 4 different numbers, 2 out of area calls, I might ask my son to phone Talk Talkagain with the numbers, I dread making what should be a simple phone call to any provider, takes to much time, and they'll probably use another number.I wonder if the banks deal with the fraud if they do scam someone.I just can't get my head round the fact its common knowledge buf nothing can be done about it. Or maybe people have been nicked and we don't hear about it, cause it could be outside of Britain. malumbu
Got a scam call the other day saying my name, very cheery, and that they were representing my claim for a fictious accident.I said, "you sound like an intelligent person, do me and you a favour and get a job of value to you and society"Phone went dead but please start challenging the call centres. We have lots more fun conversations in the household with call centres "who are you, how do you have my details, and why are you calling me", but on this occsasion I could judge the age and the intelligence and hope that it a few more of us did this the penny would drop. Now I am not going to get into a rant about capitalism - "scammers, greedy intelligent people riping off greedy stupid people". But many moons ago a colleague wanted to make some extra money woring for a call centre. They were contacting people who had put a tick in the box about being contacted about a product. The grief she got when she wasn't cold calling. That was out of order and she left after one evening. But this lot above. Please do in the most articulate way tell them that they are immoral and essentially criminals so use their intelligence to do some good. LoulaRose
Sadly the live-in carer looking after my grandparents has fallen for a scam call and now her Windows PC laptop is out of action. We recently had a broadband connection set up for her and whoever it was on the end of the phone made it sound very plausible that they were calling from BT and her computer had to be re-configured to access the internet. She has sensibly cancelled / changed all of her personal and financial information and now I would like to help her restore her laptop. Does anyone know of an IT support person / business local to East Dulwich, Herne Hill or the surrounding area? Thanks Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/103152-scam-calls-talk-talk-and-bt/#findComment-993812 Share on other sites
