The Pedestrian
If you know about the proposed (and imminant!) so called Cycle 'QUIETWAY' and you DISAGREE WITH IT, sign the petition below and share. If you don't know, it's time to find out about it. It WILL affect you- you can't avoid it. It's called a 'Quietway' to lull you into a sense of calm. Don't be deceived. If you like catching the bus- well Southwark's stated aim is to decrease buses and make you walk and cycle instead. Is that OK with you? Or would you prefer to choose for yourself how you keep fit?You can probably think of much more constructive ways to decrease traffic and improve travel and the environment for everyone without effectively creating a huge cycle lane. If so, add your ideas to the comments.Do you know the scale of the budget for this scheme? If not, find out. I guarantee you will be shocked. As a pedestrian, car driver, van driver, bus user, train and tube user, shouldn't you have your say on the route too? Only Sustrans, representing cyclists had a say. Do they have your concerns and interests in mind? Does Southwark Council?Have you thought about how you will store your family bikes? It's time to now, or SIGN THE PETITION !https://www.change.org/p/matthew-hill-southwark-gov-uk-stop-the-cycle-quietway-from-elephant-and-castle-to-crystal-palace?recruiter=521000459&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/100705-the-so-called-quietway-7-elaphant-and-castle-to-crystal-palace/ Share on other sites
yourmomma
I looked at the scale of the scheme and was underwhelmed. No "huge cycle lane" is proposed at all. Here's the map https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/cycling/lambeth-q7-wd/user_uploads/quietway-7-elephant---castle-to-crystal-palace.pdf please tell me which buses run along the route that will be impacted. Also are you willing to disclose who you are and what your interest in opposing this scheme is? I very much doubt that as a "pedestrian" you be against something which If successful may result in a decrease in car usage and thus making it more pleasant for pedestrians? titch juicy
Which buses are affected and what are the better ways to improve travel that the petition claims? JohnL
It looks to me like quietways are meant to use back street routes, parks etc.https://tfl.gov.uk/travel-information/improvements-and-projects/quietwaysSpecific info including mapshttp://www.lambeth.gov.uk/consultations/proposed-changes-to-quietway-7-cycle-route-elephant-castle-to-crystal-palace-westhttps://consultations.southwark.gov.uk/environment-leisure/dulwich-wood-avenue-to-farquhar-road Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/100705-the-so-called-quietway-7-elaphant-and-castle-to-crystal-palace/#findComment-981839 Share on other sites
titch juicy
so, it's all back routes and doesn't affect bus routes? I can't find anything on any link about bus routes being affected. Is the original post just a load of lies? The Pedestrian
It is not just about the 'Quietway' route itself but all surrounding roads. The aim of the 'Quietway' is to allow the free flow, safe passage of cyclists along it and to (theoretically)encourage less confident people to get on their bikes. This sounds commendable I know, and it's how the scheme is being sold...BUT... the free flow of other traffic, not just on the route but all around will be affected as car, van, lorry drivers all around try to avoid the 'pinchpoints', altered traffic priorities at junctions and new turn blocks put in place on the 'Quietway' As for buses, it is Southwark's stated policy to decrease bus use and increase foot and cycle use. They have stated that the 'Quietway' supports this policy (Ask them if you don't believe me). As the buses become entangled in the traffic jams it will become less viable to use them, so you will walk or cycle instead. That's the idea! Sounds great, I know, but longer term, this will mean less buses! And hopefully you're not an older or disabled person, or someone with a buggy or some heavy shopping, or even a sore foot- goodness knows what you will do then! yourmomma
I just don't get the opposition to this scheme. Take the word "cycle" away from this and isn't this something we all want. Reducing the number of cars rat-running along residential streets. Indeed pretty much all of the roads impacted already have some form of traffic calming in place. Bob Buzzard
People in ED should be cycling like in the Netherlands instead of getting buses. However he has a point in a way, with a rapidly rising population we need to think about new ways of moving people around. Unfortunately there is no money for new trains, tubes etc and there is no space for more roads. If these quietways get 20 people out of their cars that's 20 cars not in-front of your bus in a traffic jam. womanofdulwich
I would like to know why College Road has not been used as part of the route. It is a quieter road . I wonder if the Dulwich Estate were approached and said no? ( Its partly a private road). Its a much more direct route. malumbu
Two approaches to increasing cycling - segregated, including cycle superhighways, and quiet routes.Only trouble is, with particularly the latter, Boris needs to make it more convenient/attractive to switch from the car, rather than add to congestion. Particularly counterproductive when this affects bus journeys, which shoud be seen to be complimentary to cycling and walking. The traffic quagmire that is E&C is testiment to this.Taking on the car driving lobby seems to be more important to me. Abe_froeman
That petition is rather miselading. There was a consulation that closed just over a fortnight ago.
