Re: Watt the ...

France is an interesting case study. After the war they didn't want to be dependent on importing fossil fuels. They also wanted their own nuclear weapons capability. So went almost full on nuclear power. Planning was fast tracked. Sweeteners were no doubt handed out in affected areas. The UK had a s...

Re: Watt the ...

UK has reasonable security of supply. The Labou to government put in additional infrastructure as our North Sea fields became depleted. Long term storage was due to our gas fields so we could fill during summer when demand was less and wholesale price lower.

Issue is global prices not supply

Re: Satellite TV dish - worth keeping?

Many thanks. It's s in Reading but I am sure there is a decent digital signal there and broadband. When we lived in Sydenham the analogue signal was so good I'd joke you could just put your finger in the air to get the telly. It is not so great here even though you can see the Crystal Palace transmi...

Re: BUILDER TO AVOID

It's helpful to share. Firstly please inform Trading standards in the area that they are registered. From time to time they will take enforcement action. Trading standards, or more likely citizens advice, can help on trying to get money back. Trading standards has been sadly savagely cut in last dec...

Re: Womens Euro Final England v Germany

Bit dismissive of my question of font, but that is typical I thought others would be more interested and some more knowledgeable than me. A quick bit of research suggests Helvetica, a Gothic type font. There is also an old English, and a mediaeval. Suppose that all related to us being a pretty Germa...

Yes, that is in deed the pub, but they were not welcoming and threatened to call the old bill. I had a similar experience at the local garage and post office. The cemetery was more wco.ing but not sure I need the services yet.

It's a reasonably rare name and you can find her on Facebook or Google. I didn't say this earlier as the thread was not exactly going anywhere. Debit cards, Oyster cards and the like are simply cancelled and replaced. But this has reminded me of finding house keys nicely labelled with the address. G...

Also once it went viral it just wasn't the same. I still pay homage to the first Pret, although the staff there don't know anything about the savoury croissants that were one served only financial services.

Had the same problem trying to get Guinness recently in the Moor Park Hotel on Wood Vale

Well that has cleared things up! Sorry for sounding mean, I agree with your views I got a ticket in Surrey once for parking across my friend's house. Satellite TV dish - worth keeping?

Helping a family member move to their new pad. There are cables everywhere and it looks like they have wired a number of rooms to a satellite dish. I thought that most of us received digital services direct to our TVs and/or broadband. I'm all for ripping this all out. Any one still use a satellite ...

I've never used them but I will be very much in the minority. I don't see any ethical food delivery companies out there, and if there are not serving the mass takeaway market.

I'm spending a few days in Reading. The delivery cyclists all seem to have electric bikes doing 40 km/h. Illegal. I'm not one for knee jerk posts but sarf London appears pretty benign compared to here

Good point DKH, it's a shame we as consumers can't put more pressure on these businesses. If they were using slave labour we'd be up in arms. But most don't care about either the employment conditions, or that this contributes to road safety. Phew, just about kept to the topic.

Strewth Penguin, are you an apologist for big business? They pay piece rate. They do not properly train their delivery people. Don't even ensure that theyuse lights at night let alone follow the highway code and the law. Very much the unacceptable face of capitalism. A responsible government would a...

Just looking back on this thread, at least three of you have an axe to grind against cyclists. Why? Most of us aren't extremists, many of us even occasionally drive a car but are happy with measures to promote active travel. Shame some have some fixed views. I've cycled up and down Sydenham hill and...
