  1. To borrow an idea from the god thread, in the abscence of a higher authority isn't enlightened self-interest the way forward rather than trying to create said authority ?
  2. The law should apply to everybody and everybody should be equal under the law, is surely the minimum standard that should be applied to any law. I don't see how this can be said, now or in the future, of international law. The UN cannot enforce international law and so it is routinely ignored. The only weapon in the UN's arsenal appears to be sanctions which punish the people of a country whilst leaving the leadership unaffected thereby achieving nothing. The worst recent case of this is the genocide the UN perpetrated on the people of Iraq for which it will never be held accountable. All across europe the surrendering of sovereignty to the EU has been extremely divisive why should this process be repeated with the UN, a far more undemocratic institution? Effects of UN sanctrions on Iraq
  3. "Apparently he could open one one=handed and flick it atop the shower rail in under ten seconds." James Bond, clearly a man worth the full 2 bananas and possibly a pear as well. I'm surprised Fleming never got around to pointing this out given all the other cobblers he came up with.
  4. Many moons ago a friend of mine was feeling rather pleased with himself when as a young chap starting his new career he'd purchased his first 3 piece suit. He thought the waistcoat in particular gave a chap a rather distinguished air. Unfortunately this being his first suit the budget had been limited to say the least. To make up for this he reasoned he'd take it to a more traditional establishment to be altered and so found himself resplendent in new suit at Ede and Ravenscroft. He was taken into the oak panelled back room where he was pushed, pulled and tugged around by an elderley gentleman with a tape measure around his neck. Eventually he stood back and said "Well sir, I can't make it fit but I can improve it for you." Crushed.
  5. I was told earlier in the year that all the pubs in Camberwell were up for sale with the exception of the Hermits and The Bear. Since then the Silver Buckle has gone the GC looks in trouble and hasn't the Dark Horse closed?
  6. Halfway to cannibalism actually, but as a lover of the legume forgiven
  7. Any connection between these any events and the recent reemergence of allfornun perchance? As for brothels, many years ago I read electricity meters for a living and found myself in one at Vauxhall Station, masquerading as a reflexology, reiki, legit massage place.
  8. I'd just like to pick the brains of some of the professionals who read this forum if I may. A few ago it was repoted that campaigners in New Zealand were trying to get equal rights for primates to humans on the basis they shared over 99% of their DNA with us. Various experts were wheeled into british newsrooms to poo poo this idea. One of them did so with the argument that we share 50% of our DNA with broccoli. This set me to thinking, could it be possible that eventually broccoli may have the same rights as a witness in a New Zealand court as a woman does in a sharia court today. So, do any of the barristers, who I know read this forum, have any experiance with broccoli, are women really as reliable? Persoally I've always found broccoli to be exemplary in its behaviour. I can't recall a single occasion when it's lied to me or let me down, even when past its best before date. I couldn't say the same thing about some of the women I've known. Another expert used bananas as his example, again the 50% figure was used. So presumably the average man is worth two bananas. My question to the medical practioners is, if a chap is not quite the full two bananas is there treatment available on the NHS for this. Sorry, herbalists need not reply as I do not believe in pseudo-science.
  9. Marmora Man - Isn't that confusing the actions of the state with the actions of an individual citizen? The people doing the confronting in New York were armed police officers, of which it should be pointed out there are substantially more in New York than London per head of pop (armed or unarmed). At risk now of going off topic but I remember reading at the time that Guiliani's policies were often misrepresented. The reality was that at the same time as the police moving into a neighbourhood and instigating zero tolerance, all the state agencies that affected that neighbourhood, housing, social services, parks and environment the lot, also moved in. Much more akin to massive state intervention than republican Guiliani would ever like to admit. The mayor or local authorities over here just don't have the same level of power
  10. Although Moos is probably right I've reacted in the opposite manner in the past. Not long ago I did chase a mugger down a dark road (shouting something rather shorter and more blunt than come back here you naughty man!) but would ignore anti social behaviour. In the former incident I was out jogging one night and ran into someone being attacked. I didn't feel I had any choice but to intervene, what else were my options, stand and watch or carry on jogging and pretend I hadn't seen anything? I'm glad to say neither occurred to me. However with lesser anti-social behaviour I would have a choice and being a normally non-confrontational wuss I would choose to walk away.
  11. Saw these 2 recently and thought they were worth a photo. By the way how do you include pictures in the post?
  12. Considering that not all religions can possibly be right in their depictions of god/gods, but they could all be wrong, logically it makes sense to err on the side of the latter proposition as the odds are massively in its favour. Very few decisions are ever made using logic though, I thnk we react to the world we percieve in an emotional way then some try and use logic to justify those reactions and some people are happier trusting their emotional instinct.
  13. Someone brought the cream on a ski trip last year, those of us that tried it all got reactions to something toxic in it, but it did nothing at all for the bruises.
  14. Good cover of a good Arctic Monkeys song

RosieH - How do I respond adequately to such a post? All I can say is thank you and I will dedicate something in the music room to you. HonaloochieB - Bearing in mind the importance the fruits of this discourse have to the economy of East Dulwich surley action must be taken. Might I suggest the recently proposed ED Vigilantes stand guard outside each house allowing the occupants to concentrate. After a reasonable period of time, say 10 mins, an air horn is blown and the EDVs move on.
  16. I know a couple of writers for the BBC one in TV one in radio. When I last met the TV script writer I put to him the idea that writers in general weren't paid very well, I'd read somewhere that the average income was ?15000 a year, which when you consider how much JK Rowling alone is earning means there must be an awful lot on next to bugger all. He replied in a rather confessional tone that actually writing for the beeb was really quite well paid and that the top writers who get regular commissions from shows like Eastenders and are prepared and able to really churn scripts out can earn upto ?400,000 a year. Although their days maybe numbered, as DaveR pointed the BBC is not a charity with a duty to subsidise anyone. The people at the top will earn a lot and those at the bottom very little, rather like most businesses.

    Lurkers thread

I would have posted more but having registered I became concerned that Admin was orchestrating an unusual initiation ritual involving a 10 page argument with TLS and then getting stabbed on Barry Rd. If this is the case could I be stabbed first as at least I could compare the amount of time spent in A&E and if I don't survive...well could be worse. Or have I got this all wrong and is a Barry Rd stabbing EDF speak for discussing Uganda?
  19. I agree with the idea in the OP of abolishing the ban and just enforcing existing laws on anti-social behaviour, but not with the idea of turning a blind eye. How long does it take for this form of discretion to become discrimination? Putting the power of judge and jury into the hands of someone whose main qualification is that they've been issued with a hi-vis jacket by the council seems quite risky. Also the main defence the council worker has when the inevitable argument starts is that they have no discretionary power, if you disagree with a parking ticket appeal to the coucil not the parking attendant. Lawyers can argue about what's reasonable and what isn't all day long in court without any harm done (except to the public purse), the same argument out on the street won't be quite so civilized. Yes to less law and no to more discretion.
  20. I live on Marsden Rd which I tell my friends is East Dulwich my enemies it's Peckham and Customs and Revenue it's Monaco, all 3 usually accuse me of lying though.
