  1. As there seem to be a lot of threads about BF, I think many of us are at the 'very young' baby stage. I'm in two minds even now posting this, as it could be an emotive issue (and I remember the furore on the smoking when pregnant thread :~) )but here goes: The official advice now for alcohol when feeding is 1-2 units, 1-2 times a week. This is new since my first baby, when all sorts of levels were deemed 'safe' even up to 2 bottles of wine (in one sitting!!!). But this official advice is followed by the guidance that as long as you leave 2-3 hours before feeding, all the alcohol is gone. So does this mean that effectively you can drink more often than the guidelines, as long as you have long enough before you have to feed again, and a couple of times a week you can feed and drink at the same time?? This is where I'm not sure I want to hear other opinions, but lets see!
  2. Tibby, thanks for posting and I'll definitely be extra vigilant now the nights are dark. I hope you are OK now. A quick question, living in a street with only on-street parking. How did he know you had a car? Do you have a driveway, or did he just guess?? (just wondering if its an opportunist thing or if there is surveillance going on)
  3. Hi There Sorry that you are feeling worn out - I think at 3 weeks it really is one of those times when you wonder if it is ever going to get easier. It does, I promise!! Not to scare you at all, and it is probably not the case, but have you read Moos' thread about tongue tie? Very long feeds I think can be normal, but hours on end of constant feeding (rather than keep on coming back for snacks) might be a sign. I think the mw can check for this very quickly, and if it did turn out to be the case, a tongue tie can be quickly rectified, so is nothing to worry about but worth checking for. good luck x
  4. I'm also going to give Ruth's suggestion of porridge in the afternoon a go. If nothing else, it might stop me raiding the cakes and biscuits!
  5. Radnrach I have the same issues often with my 7 week old (although if I can get her to sleep for a good stretch before the 7pm feed, the milk seems to build up enough). I had the same with my first too, and the reassurance I was given is that if you really think there is no milk there, and baby is still ravenous (and despite the 'supply and demand' theories, I do believe mums can run out!) an ounce or two of formula (I know, shock! :))) is fine to give on top, after you've fed him yourself to ensure you don't reduce your supply further. Like you I tried expressing, but find that when I do this the milk supply is less in the afternoon anyway, so it kind of defeats the object. When I do 'top up', quite often my little one only takes an ounce or less, but its enough to satisfy her, I'm reassured I'm not 'failing' as she needs hardly any extra, and everyone goes to bed happy (including my older one who then gets some mummy time before bed!). Do what works for you - as long as you're giving as much milk as you have, no-one can expect any more. Good luck x
  6. Supergolden - hope 'Contraction city' only warranted a short visit, and that you're holed up at 'new parentville' now!! x
  7. Yes SG - was thinking of you today. Hope all is going well, and who knows, by now you might be back at home with a bouncing baby boy :)
  8. My 4 year old goes to Amy at Headnizm. ?10 for him now but up to 4 I think its only a fiver. Lovely cut, and she really puts my LO at ease.
  9. My son was 6/6/06 too - I had vague thoughts that if my 2nd was late she could have been 10.10.10 - but I wasn't waiting an extra 3 weeks just for the date!!
  10. Moos Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Well said, o lunching one. > > Bad Science, not that I'd pay ?14 for a bib but > it's funny... Brilliant!
  11. Well (hangs head in shame) "Lorraine" was on while I was having my breakfast and baby was asleep :)
  12. I'm so angry that the media are giving yet more airtime to Andrew Wakefield, the guy that did the original 'research' into the MMR vaccine, and has since been struck off by the GMC. The guy has been discredited, his research was found to be fundamentally flawed, and no link has ever been proven between the vaccine and autism. All he is doing now is promoting his book. So why do the media insist on letting him speak? No matter how many times they clarify "the position" by stating that its been proved to be safe etc etc, just by having him saying his stuff, casts seeds of doubts into parents minds yet again. To any parents about to go and get the jab, PLEASE don't take any notice of him, and instead listen to the fact that the media have to tell you every time its safe. Of course its emotional getting any kind of jab for your child, but it could be so much worse for them to get Measles.
  13. Molly - well obviously I wouldn't throw it away if the wee had been 'self-contained'. But I mean the times when I've not got the nappy done up in time, and its wet around the edges. I know that if it was a reusable I could wash and go - but its not something I've ever been game enough to try!!!
  14. With the first one we used sainsburys Eco ones - but with the little one they don't do them small enough, so we are trialling others. Huggies organic ones are nice and soft, and seem to fit well. Pampers I never liked as they always seemed to have a strange smell to me. An absolute BARGAIN at the moment is Morrisons - their newborn nappies are ?2 for 2 packs!! I was skeptical when the hubby came home with them, but they seem to be doing the trick, and (although I know its wasteful) I don't feel nearly as bad throwing a fresh nappy away when she wees as soon as I put it underneath!!!
  15. Another vote for the Horniman side of Forest Hill (or 'Upper Dulwich Bottom' as some like to call it :) ) So much more space - not just in the housing stock, but also the width of the roads/less traffic/more parking. I used to live just off NX road and moved a couple of years ago, and still whenever I drive in ED now it shocks me at the gauntlet you have to run just to get down some of the roads without coming face to face with a white van man - let alone being able to park. ED was lovely to be able to walk 2 minutes to anything we needed, but with kids, we reasoned that more planning is required to go out in the evenings now anyway, so when booking a babysitter we can book a cab too if needed (max ?5 to LL). Its now a bit more of a walk to things but the Horniman is on our doorstep - and the hills make for a great thigh workout - as my builder commented one day "I bet the mum's round here don't have cellulite" ;)
  16. Definitely another thumbs up for beverley hills bakery. Little LWL is literally a week old today, and I think there are just 3 muffins left (and they still taste fresh and yummy). I too would like to say they were offered to visitors, but.... :)
  17. Millsa and Buggie - Congratulations!!
  18. Hi All Baby Alice Lucy was born at 17.28 on 16th September, 7lb 14oz. Sorry to keep you all in suspense! It was a long week last week as waters kind of broke last monday, then properly on Wednesday, but contractions slow so instead of my lovely homebirth I was marched by hubby into KCH for an induction. That bit was quick at least - 90 mins from them putting the drip in, and just 40 mins from when the contractions really kicked in! If anyone has to go for the induction route, my one piece of advice is don't let them turn it up to '4.5' unless you are 100% sure its not working at '3'!!! :)
  19. Have also heard rave reviews about the Florence and its baby room. Dulwich Wood house is good too.
  20. Amanda - thanks for the invite. Are kids allowed as well as the bumps? I have my 4 year old with me on Fridays until he starts school in Jan.
  21. Congrats to Smiler and Peppa. My due date is 23rd Sept. Apparently pink, but still not convinced. Happy either way though. Hoping to follow in Smiler's and Sam Cam's footsteps and go for a couple of weeks early :)
  22. I asked my nursery nurse and she said that the weight of the child was the most important factor. My 3 year old went into a stage 3 seat (which you use with the seat belt rather than 5 point harness) as he's quite tall and over the 15 kg weight limit. The 5 point was also getting very difficult to fit, esp in wintertime with coats etc. At the same time I did buy a booster seat to use for friends and to put in other cars for those occasional trips. It can just be left in the boot of my car so is perfect for those impromptu lifts. The booster bit is the same as the bottom of our stage 3 seat. and the Britax version I have has a seat belt holder which attaches to the adult belt and keeps it on the LO shoulder rather than digging into their neck. Only thing is if you're on a longish trip and there's no-one in the back for them to lean on, then sleeping is a bit difficult as there is no headrest. Of course, booster seats won't offer as much protection as a full seat (back to the Which? point), and we all want to keep the littlies safe. But the safety features are there in the event of accidents, in which case most cars should have plenty of safety features/crash panels/airbags etc should the worst happen, before the seat even has to come into deployment. I'm not saying accidents don't happen everywhere, but for the odd occasion ludo, I think the benefits of a booster for you will outweigh any downsides of not having 'side impact wings' and the like!!
  23. Its the same where I live - the street lights are on all night. Some people have said that this improves security, but based on the fact we have a street light and an illuminated road sign right outside our house and have had petrol stolen several times in the last few months from a scooter, this doesn't ring true. Surely in these eco-friendly times, a timer system to turn the lights off after 1am or something would save more electricity? (and therefore money for the council?)
  24. I can meet on a Sunday - so are we looking at 5th September?? Am also fine for 2nd I think, although out the night before too so will have to check with OH!
