Have you given your child a mobile phone?
batgirl replied to bodsier's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter posted via my name previously. I decided to not give either of my children a phone, as I work in secondary schools and see the things most parents do not. This generation of digital natives know how to bypass parental restrictions and cover their tracks. They do not have any issues with feeling they do not belong. My eldest is actually glad she does not have a phone she says she feels she has more freedom and never gets involved in all the fallouts over who said what on WhatsApp ect. -
Have you given your child a mobile phone?
batgirl replied to bodsier's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hello everyone, I'm a thirteen year old girl who has never had a phone, let alone a smart phone and I am not allowed to have one until I am old enough to sign my own contract and pay for it my self. Even though all my friends have a phone I am not a social outcast. I personally don't believe I need a phone, if I want my friends to come over I give then my mothers phone number and my address. The process is repeated over and over, even in the summer holidays. I am happy without a phone. -
I need someone to pick me up from hospital after surgery but have no-one to do it. I am struggling to find any such service. Any ideas much appreciated.

I am trying to look into the murder of Kalbinder Kaur Hayre. Kalbinder was an Asian woman killed during a racist attack in the Dartford area in 1985.I know there was a short documentary made about the incident called 'Sari Red' although I cannot find a link to watch this. I would also like to know how to find old newspaper articles, I have tried looking on the internet and have come up with nothing. I must admit I am not great at 'surfing'. Any points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I gave birth to both my children at Lewisham Hospital, one in 2004 the other 2006.I lived on Asylum road in Peckham at the time. You are able to make a request to give birth in a hospital of your choice, but if out of your borough they may not accept.

Primary school place allocation chaos has started!
batgirl replied to tallgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Sorry for sounding a bit naive; what southwark info? do you mean the book they give out about admissions? They did have the mixed aged thing going on anyway last year. I have to be honest and say alot of this stuff confuses me:-$ -

emc - Really happy that you got in and haven't had to endure last years stress. :)-D I really don't understand how they can say they don't have the space one year but the next hey presto! the can fit in another 15. It contradicts their reasons for turning down appeals last year based on class size. -

I attend every week, did appeal the decision but got no where, even took a local councillor along. She told me that the fact I was not married was an issue,I do believe I could have won if took it further but felt so worn down from the whole process and gave up. Wish I pursued out of principal. -

Can somebody tell me how a child living off Meeting House (down by peckham police station) lane got into St Anthony's when I could not get my daughter in last year and I am in Nunhead???? It is not a fair system. -
I'd want to know if they were my kids.....
batgirl replied to Narnia's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I too think you have done a great deed. I wish I had thought to do the same last summer, when I witnessed a chidminder leaving two babies in her car while she went into Fairlawn nursery to collect a child. I did stay by the car till she came back as one baby was screaming and there would have been ample time for someone to have grabbed both children. I did have a few words with her and spoke to the head of the nursery. Wish I did more, such as trying to find the parents to let them know:( *edited to correct spelling* -

My apologies if my post offended anyone, at the time I started to post I recieved some bad news. In haste and whilst not thinking clearly submitted my comment. That said Debi I don't think it is fair to assume one is unwilling to "back up their perceptions". I do not have personal experience of Kingsdale and am only sharing what I have been told,I also appreciate that not all experiences are the same. My friend removed her child due to bullying and lack of communication. Her suspicions were aroused when her child stared feigning illness. Unkonwn to him she went to the school to find out what was going on. They informed her that there had been several incidents of her son being bullied although she understands this happens in all schools she could not understand why the school at not informed her. They had no answer as to why she had not been contacted, therefore she removed him. A college of mine also removed her child from Kingsdale when in was in year 11. Her son had also experienced bullying, the final straw came when her son refused to hand over his new coat to said bully, the bully then slashed his coat with a stanley knife while he was wearing it. This incident did happen two years ago so things may have changed.

Hi Nunheadmum, I live in Nunhead also and applied for St Anthonys last year for a place in reception and nursery. My eldest child did not get in but my youngest did. Although I appealed the reception place I was unsuccesful. I ended up with my youngest in St Ant's nursery and my eldest in St Francesca cabrini (as my youngest did not get a place at cabrini). In the begining I was very anxious and stressed out about the whole scenario. However I do have to admit that St Francesa cabrini has been a pleasent surprise, my daughter has fitted in really well and really loves it there, she is doing very well and I have been told she is working well above reception level and to keep her challenged the work is tailored to her abilities as is done for each child. Hope this helps.

HerneHilly, I found a document on the wed dated 2004 where southwark predicited there would would a huge demand for primarey school provision. They have just chosen to do nothing about it. I also have a copy of a letter sent to Harriet Harmen from the head of St Anthony's in which he states "You will be aware of our staement of case to increase our admissions number to 60 which, in Februaury of this year, was copied to you, another member of parliment for a local constituency, senior members of the dcfs, every local councillor and senior of the local authoritywith responsibility for planning. No reply from any of the above was received and yet we are told that this area of London is in desperate need of primary school places. The East Dulwich Forum has tales of parents being offered schools miles from home."

Primary school admissions - appeals
batgirl replied to mrs.lotte's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Unfortunately not, lost an infant class size appeal. I was then informed after the hearing by the head of the school, he had proposed to local councillors to make his school a two from entry, but not one of them bothered to respond.
