Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
jonbateson replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My concerns are not so much with the bus route coming past our house, more about the volume (often 3 buses all at once) and the speed that they travel. We are lucky in that we have a drive to park our car on but I am very concerned about the buses turning into the road, they come round very fast and wheels have come very close/onto the pavement whilst I have been standing nearby with my small children. Also pedestrians are not good at looking before they cross the road at the therapia/fhr junction and there could well be a nasty accident just there (that's more an issue of the pedestrians, but it becomes far more risky when buses are turning in at speed). To the people suggesting we are being selfish by complaining about this, I wonder what you would do if you had similar concerns about buses on your road. -
Diverted 63 bus route - Marmora & Therapia Roads
jonbateson replied to OD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It has been more noticeable in the evening, often 2-3 buses coming down therapia in convoy, this is getting a bit much, I would be interested in attending the meeting. Please advise on time/date.. -

Ideas for original present for first time mum to be
jonbateson replied to SebsC's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hello, I make fine silver charms/ pendants using handprints etc, please take a look at my page www.facebook.com/mariamadeit and see the fine silver album. I sell the print kit for ?5 which is ink less, easy to do and mess free, this in itself makes a lovely keepsake, you could then purchase a voucher for the new mummy to choose what she wants later. -

I had my daughter at a birth centre in Leicestershire. I called them to say I had gone into labour and things were progressing, the midwife asked if I wanted to come in or wait, I said I wanted to come in as I was worried about the drive, to which she exclaimed "you're not driving yourself are you?" When I arrived, the mw insisted I wasn't in active labour as I was too calm and able to speak, she wanted to send us home, I said no so she said she'd examine me... I was 8cm. Shortly after all contractions stopped. I had 2 hours of nothing so they broke my waters, 42 minutes later I was cuddling my daughter.

I'm not claiming to be a mum genius but simple (read easy) exciting picnics involve many little plastic pots with different things in... Sandwiches, crisps, carrot/ cucumber/pepper sticks, hummus, sausage rolls/ little sausages/ rolled up slices of ham, basically finger food and then more little pots of fruit, cakes, whatever, it seems it's the pots (well in this house it is) that make it exciting!

jonbateson replied to RAW85's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hello, I'm from Nottingham too! Ed is a great place to live, I would just check your options on schools as this is an issue around here... Maria -
My kindle has died (just needs charging but I can't find the charger) so 30 day thing has gone by the wayside... Anyway, I just thought it might be nice to put some links to your blogs in mine, if you could do the same, anyone think that's a good idea..? Please tell me if this is to a good idea as I am generally clueless about blogging.

made a cock up with my daughter - advice needed!
jonbateson replied to susyp's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Sometimes whatever you say is wrong so even if you had chosen a different word, you could still be in this position. Find something that she can do well and give her lots of praise. Come back to the monkey bars again and keep practicing, show her that by sticking at it and trying she will get there. Maybe take her climbing, her height will be her advantage. -
If there are 15 places (in the first year) allocated to each nodal point, there should be 15 children living within a short distance of each other. The catchment areas aren't going to be changed as The other schools in the area are local authority and need to adhere to the authority regulations on admissions, the free schools and academies have a bit more of a free hand in deciding their own admissions system. I agree that it is not ideal, especially with regard to getting to school in the mornings etc but at the moment, I can't see there being any other options short of building a new school at the end of the road, which clearly isn't going to happen. The catchments of the other local schools aren't going to be changed with the arrival of a free school but there may be a knock on effect across the area that may benefit those just outside the catchment of other schools. For us though, the only chance of getting a place at a school in ed is if the nodal points are used and if one of those is close to us.

Today and tomorrow they are doing spin painting to make cards (perfect for Father's Day) it costs ?2 per card and my two have just created one for daddy and two more for their grandads. My three year old was able to do it himself and my one year old chose colours, so great for all ages! And I had a coffee whilst they had fun. They are dried in the process so no walking about with wet paint etc. Captured on the rye is on pellat road, just off lordship lane and well worth a visit. I highly recommend it. Ps there will be more things on next weekend too!

Kumon - thoughts/experiences?
jonbateson replied to ladywotlunches's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I haven't had time to read the article yet,but I wouldn't get too hung up on schools failing children, in some cases yes but in others there are all sorts of opportunities. It depends on the school, the training of the teachers, the G&T co-ordinator if they have one, how learning is supported at home and the attitude of the students. I'm pleased you think that idea will be useful and yes, keep relaxed and go at his pace and his interests, it may be worth talking with his teacher at school to see how this is playing out in the classroom. Kumon - thoughts/experiences?

I am a teacher with a specialism in teaching gifted and talented students. I would say at this age it is far more empowering to follow his lead. Let him decide what he wants to find out and how, he might want to visit a museum for example or he might prefer to go online. If you learn with him that will help, and you can model how to go about figuring out things you don't know about. Another activity that some children enjoy is to do a role reversal type thing, give him a period of time, day/ week in the summer and a budget and talk bout what you might do together. Then he can organise/ research/ book tickets/ plan routes etc this may lead on to using excel or similar to keep track of spending, just follow his lead. -
No idea on car sizes, but I would recommend you take your own car seat for bub. We have hired a number of cars but never liked the look of the car seats we were offered, we took two carseats with us to NZ (they charge a lot for them at car hire places too). Sorry if you already know this.

I attended, although I was late so missed the very beginning. I was impressed overall by the presentation from Harris. There were a lot of political questions posed which were directed to councillors instead as the point of the meeting (others may disagree) was to share info on the school concept. It will be a two form entry (total of 60 children per year group), building to a population of 420 over 6 years. Initial staffing will be sufficient for 60 children, again building year on year, this does include fully qualified teachers/ PPA cover/ teaching assistants etc. Key aims include creating a school where children feel happy and safe. They will follow the national curriculum and there will be a focus on cross curricular, engaging learning. What they are aiming for is best practice rather than trying to do something totally different to the norm. The site is confirmed as the hospital site as discussed in other threads. They seem quite positive with regard to opening on time, but may have temporary buildings on site at first. Applications will follow the normal first priorities of children with a statement where the school is named on the paperwork/ looked after children/ siblings Then, on distance, possibly from a series of nodal points around ED to cover the "black spots" there will be 3/4 of these, one being the front door of the school as with other schools. There will be some consultation on where the other points should be and 15 school places available for each nodal point. The head teacher will be appointed in the autumn and they are hoping to hold a meeting where this person will be in attendance. Also, parents may view the Harris primary at Peckham, to get some ideas of how it might be (obv not the same as visiting the actual school). For more info look on the website HarrispRimaryfreeschooleastdulwich.co.uk As a teacher, I was happy with what I heard and whilst there are issues surrounding the site etc, we need more primary places and there are few other options, especially if you live in a black spot. I am aware that some people may have strong opinions on this, but I am just reporting the meeting, ask requested from the initial post. Maria
