  2. Hmmm - engineers report? Trouble is you need to see if it is still moving - are the present owners monitoring ? 6/12 months data is good. Usual trick isto tape over cracks and see if the paper rucks up - properly done you put ceramic straps across the cracks and see if they break with the movement ~And remember clay both shrinks and expands with water etc
  3. Much better video from the late great Barry Mason ............. peckhambog Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > Slightly longer video below gives practical > advice. > >
  4. Yeah - build outs (e.g. for pedestrian crossings) and sharp narrowing make cyclists vulnerable as they (we!!) pull out and risk a collision. Gentle narrowing better. Narrow two way trafic gutters parrallel best as it slows traffic. No more one way streets or gyratories Poor road surfacing? No change there then - the new Blanchedown Crossing was unfinished and dangerous for weeks! > Quite a few roads have been narrowed in the name > of cycle safety. > > As a cyclist, I'm less than convinced. 5. Yeah - pitched to the local cycling community as an experiment in "going dutch" and then clearly demonstrated thst Southwark Road engineers do not know how to build better roard for cyclists - but as there was budget itsbeen used to improve matters for pedestrians - some gains there KalamityKel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is this not part of the general road improvements > planned along that stretch of road which is meant > to be for cycle safety or something?
  6. Yeah - ill though out ? There seemed to be pollarding going on yesterday - surely you do not pollard in the growing season? Errrrr http://www.paramountplants.co.uk/blog/index.php/tree-pruning/ "When To Pollard a Tree Pollarding is best carried out during the dormant winter months, when the leaves of deciduous trees have fallen, it?s much easier to see the shape you are creating and there?s less stress to the tree as there is minimal loss of sap. "
  7. Sorted out typos........... Email for southwark cyclists is southwark@lcc.org.uk They are always pleased to accompany newbies a few times - they did that for me ages ago. Also do not forget cycle training - err - http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200123/cycling/446/cycle_training
  8. Seeing that makes me wonder about the other tree there which looks the same and looks as close?

  12. I've got to drive from Heathrow back to ED on this coming Friday am - starting from Heathrow at about 06.30 to 07.00... * will I hit the rush hour into London? * I'd usually come all the way in to Vauxhall Bridge and come through Camberwell but is there a better way at this time?
  13. Agree Jimbo - but take your wellies for the puddle that blocks access to the ped crossing button that works the cycle lights as you go from Rockingham over Newington Causway to Southwark Bridge Road
  14. cyclist down - RIP Driver arrested, still being reported on bbc as "cyclist hits lorry" - usual b-----lks http://www.lfgss.com/thread127049.html This IS the redesigned junction - the so called South Roundabout. 15. with thanks to Friends of Peckham Rye Park .......... "We have been alerted to the works by Thames Water to alleviate flooding in the Peckham Rye area ? this will certainly affect those living near the below mentioned roads ______________________________________________ Details of the Scheme; Area 1 Involves works in St Aidans Road, Crebor Street, Barry Road and Peckham Rye. The scheme is needed to resolve flooding problems to basements in some properties in the area. The houses effected are scattered across the locality and not necessarily neighbouring properties, mainly in the Underhill Road and Upland Road area. Risk modelling has been undertaken to ascertain future risks of flooding and to predict costs to resolve the problems. A tunnelling solution has been proposed as well as some FLIPS (Small Package Pump Stations at individual properties) St Aidans Road will be closed for 6 months work due to commence in April. This is obviously not popular with the residents who will be significantly effected and it is not their properties that are flooding! Tunnelling will be undertaken the length of St Aidans to Underhill Road and joining to the main trunk sewer by The Elms in the park. Thames/MGTv have requested to place a compound in the Elms Area for the duration of the works. We have informed them that this maybe a possibility but the ground conditions in the area are very boggy. They are in the process of applying for the traffic orders and permits, and they will be undertaking ecological and tree surveys in the next couple of weeks. We will request that our tree officer attends these meetings. We do not have any major concerns regarding granting permission for their compound as long as the trees and wildlife are protected and suitable reinstatement is carried out. Highways have some traffic concerns with vehicles turning in and out of the park onto the Rye and MGTv have been asked to provide details of how they will manage this, smaller loads etc. Once completed there will only be a man hole cover visible above ground in the park. We have informed Thames/MGTv that park users/friends may ask what benefit there will be to the park for the disruption and suggested that they may want to contribute to possible improvements in the area, once we know the details of the feasibility study for investigating the stream and adding a wetland area. (Peter Frosts CGS bid). They are also proposing to undertake tunnel works on Peckham Rye on the road to the left of Barry Road. This will be partially closed for 9 months commencing in June. Highways of course have extreme concerns regarding this scheme as it will cause major traffic disruption. Thames/MGTV have investigated the possibility of undertaking a soft dig across the common, but thankfully for parks, have come to the opinion that this is not worth pursuing as the legal protection of MOL and common status will mean that it would take years to pursue and the possibility of granting permission would be highly unlikely. They have requested that parks allow a compound on the common or in the park for the duration of these works. We have informed them that this is highly unlikely as there is no suitable area and we have also informed them of the details of the Peckham Revitalisation scheme and the impact that will have on the park. Area 2 Involves tunnelling to Turney Road this will have an impact on traffic management but not at the park. Caroline and Ian Law are the LBS contacts for highways. Thames will be sending us details of the St Aidans scheme and the compound they require. Once we have these It would be useful to meet with you to discuss. The meeting was also attended by John Kissi LBS and John Greenyer. They have been discussing a wider scheme for flooding alleviation that may effect the park. They will be sending a meeting request shortly. It maybe useful for you to also attend this meeting to find out what they are proposing. They have no funding as yet and I think they were originally proposing an idea that may have effected the common, but now they have been informed of the strict planning laws they are likely to dismiss this, so the meeting is just to discuss ideas.
  16. have to drive to collect from e Croydon station at 19hrs - andideas here on estimated travel time given it is a wet Friday pm?
  17. Part of proposed TFL funded quietway
  18. Grrrr - why did I get this and not notice of temporary diversion https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/buses/routes-136-and-343
  19. Coming late to this but also was caught by this - went down to get a 343 last Wednesday - only an occasional user - no other notice despite being notified of changes at Burbage Road had no notice of this other than on the bus stop - nothing on TFL web site at the time - TFL etc could do better
  20. Salsaboy - we are defo on single phase in our street - I can see the earth spike on the supply just now as the hole is not filled in Any answers to my original questions please as in ? 1) When did electricity come to SE22 / SE15 ? 2) How old is mains cable (mains fuse to street) likely to be if wrapped in cloth? 3) are such cables still in iron pipes that are "made off" at "T's" under the road outside our house? 4) Where are the local sub stations?
  21. Re flickering it may be worth putting a meter on something - e.g. one of your 13amp sockets - to check if you have voltage or power drops. If so there could be any number of issues ranging from a partial break in a local cable (originals from meter to substation ran in pottery pipes that can break as drains do), poor earthing, problems at the sub station and so on
  22. Now found out our own supply is simgle phase - so that's one of five!
  23. I'm curious about our electricity supply having had issues over Christmas .... 5) Assume each mains supply locally is on one of three phases? Anything else I should know? :-)
  24. Hi all - as you were - UK Power Net says my neighbours problem is re cable not phase lost - generator provided
  25. If its any help our neighbour is also off - but we are on - suggests one of the three (?) phases is out and apparently (from neighbour) men are looking into it :-(
