  1. Ok so mine are well beyond reception but on reflection my concerns would be that if they were to join straight into year 1 then they would not be going back over the work they had missed out on and so they would be behind in that way. My eldest is summer born and has just done her mock GCSEs but way back when she started primary her school had a split start and automatically put her with the January starters. Nobody went back over the work she had missed out on during that first term. I was new to the whole system and wasn't aware of this. Looking back she can remember feeling behind the others and aware that she didn't know stuff they did. However her learning really kicked in during year 1 and her age soon made no difference. So I guess what I'm saying is if you are delaying their start and they are going to go into year 1 then make sure you are teaching them yourself so they are not behind unless they are going to be able to start in reception a year late and then it can be a more relaxed extra year before school. I know all children develop at different rates and will take different things in at different rates but for a child to miss out on reception then they are missing out on lots of learning opportunities that they will take in at their own pace and also a gentle intro to the formality of school life.
  2. How does this work? Does a delayed child go into yr1, with their age group, when they do start or do they get to start in reception a year late?
  3. I went in the summer and it was in the car park by the other recycle bins.
  4. Defo echo a thumbs up for Crystal Palace Sat morning athletic classes. The coaches, Roy and Judi are amazing. They teach technique and take them from quite young. That for a couple of years would be fab and then something like South London Harriers who also train at CP and a route into competitions.
  5. There is an electronic recycle bin in the car park at Peckham Rye Park. Doesn't take massive stuff though. I put an iron in there recently.
  6. All this is because a DM journo has moved into the area and is bigging it up / wanted to do an easy article.
  7. We stayed at a Premier Inn recently in a family room with a double and two singles and we took a camping roll for one to sleep the floor on. We were going to a family function and couldn't find anywhere nearby suitable for a family of 5. When I spoke to the Premier Inn they said loads of people just bunk in a room for 4 and they were perfectly happy about it. Only problem is kids breakie is free for each paying adult - we spoke to them about this and payed for the extra child breakie. Have also stayed in the Dalmeny Hotel in St Annes near Blackpool which had a main door to the corridor then a connecting hallway for two connecting rooms - I know you said you didn't want this but just making the point that with this set up the kid's room didn't connect directly onto the hotel hallway. We had a coffee table and chairs in our room which we all sat around for room service breakfast delivered at no extra cost. Seem to remember a mini kitchen off our room too.
  8. Yeah go for it. Some bits usually a bit pantomime-ish and kitsch but usually some impressive acts too. If you can stomach the price for extra bits of tat, buy your kids some spinning lights at the start and they will be invited to wave them along from time to time.
  9. Fab, glad to be able to help!
  10. It was ?40 not ?50 (happy days!), probably about 10 mins ish. We were invited to wait on one of their huge sofas, which we did. All fine.
  11. Defo the arcade by Morrisons in Peckham. The furniture shop at the Morrisons end of the arcade. There is a tiny mobile counter in the entrance to the massive furniture shop. ?50 cash while you wait.

  13. Cheers Curmudgeon!
  14. Where do / did (recently) your teens do their A'levels in the state sector? We will be looking around this autumn for year 12 start in Sept 2017. I'm not so hung up on good / bad recommendations but more the spread of colleges that people go to. Usual local school suspects will be on our list but other than Lewisham college we are not sure what other colleges our lovely city has to offer. Thanks.
  15. The northern end of LL, so on a map the top ;)
  16. What tactics have you tried to comfort her?
  17. Why is the water green? Not stagnant pond green but the water shooting up from the fountain in the middle is bright green, like it has been dyed or my hubby has spat his mouthwash in it!
  18. I googled this recently and there is no law or standard practice as to right or left fence etc but it is something to be agreed with neighbours and then have written into your deeds.
  19. No that sounds well dodgy. I would phone the met police non-emergency number (101) and run it by them :(
  20. We've been to Gozo with our brood, which is much quieter than the mainland but really all they wanted was a pool. We took the ferry back to the mainland to visit Medina and a water slide park on the northwest coast - the name escapes me. It is a fab place to go with kids, very child friendly. Also worth taking a coastal boat trip. Last time we went to Gozo the production company for Brad and Angelina's film by the sea were just setting up as it was all filmed on Gozo - imagine that is on the tourist trail by now. Enjoy.
  21. I love that uncleglen but I managed to stop at 3. Happy with that but defo tip my hat to those that carried on. Strawbs as someone else said along the way if you are thinking about it then it is highly likely you will go for it and probably just need someone to push you off that cliff. Sod the cash and practicalities and think that it is another little person you are thinking about and soon enough you won't be able to remember life without them. It is another little bit of chaos but you are experienced and more relaxed. Someone did mention swimming lessons and yes I do think 'ugh how many more swimming lessons do I have to sit through?' but that's about it. People regret the kids they didn't have and not the ones they did. Go for it.
  22. Celia Hammond cat rescue - she has these excellent fluffy ones that work every time ;)
  23. Oh dear dreadful. We are with Melbourne Grove. I called them recently for a non-urgent appointment and they offered me one within two days.
  24. French is no doubt the most traditional second language for us Brits but I just wanted to point out that many secondaries these days also focus heavily on Spanish and German. I have two in secondary and was mildly surprised that they weren't even offered French but do Spanish and Latin by default and one did German in an after school club.
