  1. Rang 101 this morning and reported - much shorter wait time so I guess there are more operators on at 7am than at 3am!
  2. Doorbell just rang at 3am - took me a little while to get downstairs, when I got there there were three sets of people on scooters / motorbikes parked across the road, they yelled something at me, appeared to be consulting a map or piece of paper, and then rode off. There had been a loud knock at the door at around 9:15 or 9:30 last night that I didn?t answer. It?s a potential burglary, no? Am now a bit anxious. Tried ringing 101 to report suspicious activity but gave up after being on hold for over 15 minutes with message that there was a lengthy wait time. Should I ring a police station or fill in the online form (bit pointless as nothing very concrete to tell them)? Feel like I should tell someone.
  3. On the cricket question, girls are absolutely encouraged to join, we are hopefully that this will be a better pathway for younger girls into club cricket, as they can sometimes be reluctant to join formal cricket sessions where they are outnumbered by the boys (the girls who aren't bothered about that generally hold their own against the boys at that age). This is the first year All Stars is being run, some girls have signed up already. (As an aside we also have a girls- only session on a Weds for girls in Year 4 and above)
  4. Hi there, You may be interested in a new English Cricket Board initiative to encourage children to give cricket a try for the first time - it is very skills focused and doesn't require equipment or previous cricket experience - the focus is on fun and parents and carers are encouraged to stay and join in. There are weekday and weekend sessions at Dulwich CC and Alleyns CC (run in addition to the club's existing junior membership and coaching programmes)- for more information see https://www.ecb.co.uk/play/all-stars. Sam (am a volunteer parent at Dulwich CC and happy to answer any questions).
  5. Stir fry egg noodles that you find in the salad section at the supermarket - quick to cook and an alternative to potatoes or rice. Gammon steak. And crumbing veal schnitzel is really quick. Confession - DS had bacon sarnies and cucumber for dinner tonight, we have a quick turnaround for cricket nets... Oh, and spaghetti carbonara.
  6. Pizza making party at pizza express? Solves venue, food and entertainment in one go....
  7. There is usually one at the Dulwich Sports Club. ?5 entry for adults and children over 10. In Burbage Road. Bonfire Night Our bonfire party will take place on Saturday 7th November Doors Open 5pm Bonfire 6.30pm Fireworks 7pm Entry ?5, children under 10 free Food and drinks available with a safe indoor viewing area.
  8. Just for pickles' benefit - I really miss Dunedin. Great spot to be a scarfie.
  9. david- we are going to put down astro in our cricket mad household's back garden - the chap doing it is also cricket mad (he has several sons playing county cricket) and he thinks it's OK for backyard cricket. That said he has installed a proper cricket net in his own back yard....
  10. Hands up, I trained as a lawyer, so moral arguments hold little sway (hard cases make bad law). It seems to me that the school was probably told that it could use the land as a playing field on a very temporary basis pending the estate sorting out the planning permission for development, but that's not the message that the school has passed on to prospective parents, who are now unsurprisingly severely unimpressed. If that is the case (and I don't know the ins and outs) then I would be pretty angry at the school if I were an existing parent. I know many people think the trustees of the Dulwich estate should act differently on "moral grounds", but tbh trust law is one of the least flexible areas of the law - it isn't warm and fuzzy, and any trustee acting outside the strict terms of the trust could find themselves personally liable for unauthorised expenditure. I know people think of charities as warm and fuzzy but trust law just ain't.
  11. Exactly landsberger. It's noted above that the department of education negotiated the lease so "against govt policy" is a pretty difficult argument to run. Also, even if the lease was negotiated by the DoE surely JKPS must be a party to it, or how is it bound by the restrictions? I can't help feeling that people's time would be better spent looking for an alternative eg an arrangement like I understand Lyndhurst have with SCST. (For the record I completely agree with the importance of schools having outdoor play and volunteer with a children's sports club, just can't see how the legal argument stacks up in this case).
  12. Tbh I struggle with this given that when the school chose the site it knew that the development was planned. It's not quite the same as selling off a long established playing field, is it? If the Estate had wanted to it could have excluded the field from the lease from the outset and perhaps have saved itself some grief. If JKPS intended to object from the outset, surely that's a bit disingenuous?
  13. Hi all, In case any of you has a child in Year 1 who would like to give cricket a try this summer, Dulwich CC still has a few remaining spaces in its Saturday morning "under 6" sessions. These will run from 9am until 10am at the Dulwich Sports Club in Giant Arches Road (off Burbage Road), starting on 25 April and continuing until mid July. The cost is ?95. We also have spaces in our Wednesday evening session for girls in Year 4 and above. If you are interested, send me a PM as I don't check the forum that regularly. There are caps on numbers so that we can ensure appropriate coaching resource. To pre-empt questions about other age groups, our under 7 to under 12 groups are close to fully subscribed at this point, and we are operating waitlists while we chase renewals from a final few members. There are, however, plenty of opportunities to play at other local clubs and I can point you in the right direction if you need assistance. Sam
  14. Isn't there a mobile mast on the Pelo ground, within the Estate? Doesn't seem to be on the diagram, but just googled it and it seems there is a separate planning application to upgrade it? planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=_STHWR_DCAPR_9558973
  15. The independent school traffic is made worse by the fact that many parents with younger children are dropping one child at DPL or DC and the other at JAGS. Here's a suggestion: parents of children at all three schools drop their children in the Dulwich Park car park, and the three schools run "walking buses" (or minibuses if they must, although it's more than walkable and something similar works well at DPL at present) to each of the three schools.
  16. Not in London, but someone recommended this place in Guldford to me recently.... http://airhoptrampolinepark.com/index/
  17. I think football magic start at 3- not in Dulwich Park but very close by http://www.footballmagiccoaching.co.uk/sunday_football.html
  18. I've just had a flyer from the Village Ward Labour Action Team advising that the Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport and the Leader of the Council "have agreed to completely drop the ban on right hand turns from the proposal". This will be formally confirmed in a report delivered at the meeting on the 28th. Officers have apparently been asked "to come back as soon as possible with revised options which improve safety without causing traffic congestion elsewhere in Dulwich".
  19. Don't get me wrong - I don't think a trial is a great idea, but given Southwark Council seem to have been taken over by a vociferous cycle lobby I have some real doubts about the integrity of the process. Judicial review proceedings are extremely expensive - those in power seem to have publicly bought into the idea of trials - so it might pragmatically be a least worst option. Given the extensive traffic jams in Calton Ave / woodwarde ave/ the village in the last week, I did wonder whether the council were conducting a trial already. Good luck to anyone who tries to rat run those routes - or gilkes crescent if the massive building programme at the audi site goes ahead.....
  20. According to this http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/1685800/1574294730/name/KickStands_July+1+2014+Briefing+note.doc, southwark officers, after a two day briefing with a cycling consultancy, now embrace the idea of trialling things on a temporary basis (language a bit unfortunate, it sounds as though some sort of "thought reform" process has gone on).So before committing lots of cash, why not trial the no right turn ban using an experimental traffic order? And then we can see what traffic chaos may or may not ensue?
  21. We went here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g651666-d1739817-Reviews-Kinderhotel_Almhof-Gerlos_Tirol_Austrian_Alps.html With a group of friends the year before last - fantastically well set up for kids, high altitude so the snow lasts until late in the season - we went in April and it wasn't cripplingly expensive, the all inclusive food package was worth it. Nice rooms, family friendly food for children, great pool and I enjoyed the end of day yoga classes. Kids lessons at the hotel itself, you have to drive or get a bus to the main skifield but not far and no hassle. Ski hire at the hotel. Generally cheaper to fly to Munich rather than Innsbruck .
  22. James, unless I am missing something you are indicating that someone at Judith Kerr has disclosed confidential information to you about the terms of their lease from the Dulwich Estate, in breach of the confidentiality clause in their lease. If so that would put them in breach of their lease? Why would you post that in a public forum? Presumably the info about the lease was also transmitted to you in confidence? Am I missing something?
  23. Yes but as yo've mentioned it several times now and noted that they've been asking for six years it's obviously an issue. If Heber have an ongoing issue about lack of sports space then why not start a thread asking for support on that. Is all I'm saying.
  24. Maybe. Ms millar was on SkY this morning with the chap from the independent schools conference, not entirely convinced by her performance, interestingly she seemed to be drawing the line between "well heeled schools" (state and private) vs others,,which I habe some sympathy with. Keane, have you had a thread about Heber's situation/ who, apart from Alleyns, has the school engaged with?. I suspect a community brainstorm about Heber's games facilities might be more productive than sniping at Alleyns. Have you spoken with eg SCST or the chaps at the Griffin?
  25. Mako - fair comment. I'm just generally tired of having well heeled parents telling me I'm morally wrong for sending my child to a private school, and that they would never choose a school outside the state system. Including a couple of people who have backtracked when their only personal option turned out to be the "wrong" kin of state school. Bu t you didn't , of course, say that.
