Thank you very much for all the suggestions. Really appreciate them. After all that, he has decided to postpone and come when "the bloody weather cheers up a bit!"

Does anyone know if there is any live music nearby this Saturday night? Even if it's just a cheesy pub singer? (in fact, even better if it is!) My dad, who is a bit of a crooner, is visiting and i've been looking for somewhere laid back for a few drinks, but with a bit of entertainment? I've looked in the 'what's on' and scoured the net...just thought i'd see if anyone had any ideas? Cheers.....

Yes..i wanted to say congrats too! Wishing Sharmina loads of luck.

An East Dulwich local needs your votes (for music not politics!)

A vote from me too. Good luck! -
ahhh...thank you andycam! Good luck Declan...I might lay some sneaky traps for them too later.

Yes! We've had them in our flat for a while....they are very odd. As you say, there's only ever one of them and they are very slow. However, once i catch one, I usually spot another lone cruiser a bit later. I thought they would go at the end of the summer too, but they're still hanging around. We haven't done anything about them, because we don't know what they are or where they're coming from. But they are getting annoying. Anyone else know?

randomentry didn't even say that he/she thought the house would definitely be a hub of trouble, but was asking for advice and is quite right to have some reservations. Totally agree with Catalyst...Even those who are trying hard to rid themselves of drugs or drink can fall off the wagon and whilst that's sad and others understand their plight, it doesn't mean they should have to suffer because of it. I know someone who lives near what is supposed to be a dry hostel, housing ex alcoholics who are beginning to rebuild their lives. Unfortunately it is often the scene of trouble and my friend has many a sleepless night because of noise. Sometimes, i think it's some of the 'rip your head off just for the sake of it' postings on this forum that could potentially put people off moving to the area!

Hi Josefa...I moved here around four months ago and had the same reservations about walking home at night but have had no problems at all. In fact, i feel quite safe now. As everyone usually says, it's all about common sense and being aware of what is around you. Stick to the main roads as in any area and you'll be fine. Have fun in East Dulwich!

Myself and my brother met Ian Wright a couple of years ago in Hampstead. We were coming from the heath with a football....he was really kind to my brother, signed an autograph and kicked a ball about with him for at least ten minutes. Seemed a really nice guy.

I was there today! It was AMAZING! On a high now...i'll never sleep tonight!

double love...(except the bit about the Midlands...i'm from the East Midlands and we've got lights, loads of 'em!)

I'd like to come along...You lot are a bit scary sometimes though....but very helpful and occasionally hilarious!

I'm being attacked by these blighters too. Sat out in the garden on Saturday night and have six big bites on my back. (my dad who was visiting was confused about how they could get under my top - which was amusing!) then the next night i got two more on my arm. They're horrible, not like mozzy bites...they are leaving really bad marks. Buggers! p.s thanks to all for the suggestions on what to do with the family on an earlier thread. We had a great time and the weather was glorious...ended up playing cricket in Dulwich park all day Sunday. Was only slightly disappointed that the Plough wouldn't let my 14-year-old brother in, even to eat, after 7pm. (But that's nowt to do with the pesky flies...sorry!)

Thanks guys...these are some really great suggestions...I'm feeling a bit less worried about it now! Will definitely do some park walking etc, but i was just a bit worried about this crappy weather we're having! I'm certainly going to do the sweet shop...my dad and younger bro will love that. (Dad has always had a not so secret tin of mixed sweets hidden away in the kitchen!) I have only been here for about six weeks and work loads so haven't got around to going to Dulwich park yet...but that's also on the list, the boys will love the puting. My dad is early 50s and a little bit stuck in a rut I think - music is his biggest love. I also haven't been to the Herne yet, so thanks for that suggestion and I'll be sure to book. Any other gems let me know and thanks again all you great ED tourist guides!

My dad and my two brothers are visiting next weekend - (one is only a teen...and it's not my dad). I want to show them what a great place East Dulwich is. So far, i have really only managed to get drunk in on LL on friday nights...so what can i show them? Where are the best places to go....and eat? (I will check out the numerous restaurant threads on the last bit but any new suggestions are welcome.) My dad is a bit boring and likes mainly English grub! I want to show them a great weekend....am taking them to the British music experience at the 02 but it'd be cool to hang out locally too. Any suggestions would be very welcome.....cheers!

Lost a friend in Afghanistan this week. RIP Sean and all those who have lost their lives fighting this war. Young Hearts Young hearts run free apparently They beat near us no longer They slip down cracks in busy pavements Get lost like socks and bits of paper Young hearts throb with life one moment Then fade like broken promises the next They skip away from happy homes Chasing boys, chasing girls, chasing dreams They don?t come back that night, next morning They lie in streets, broken hearts broken bones Young hearts float above the world they roamed They leave behind a life time of aching Baited breath awaits a return Who could tell? Who could have known? Free they go, those young hearts Swaggering and weaving their journey And in a single nothingness flash A young heart leaves us A whole world will smash.

I agree...great book. One of my faves of the last few years.

That's horrible. last night at about 11pm two indian boys passed me on the corner of Crystal Palace road (Goose Green end). As I got past them they started saying quite suggestive things and were very leary - then they turned around and followed me (although not very quickly.) shouting 'oi come back' I didn't have far to go so got to the house quite quickly and they disappeared. Probably not linked at all but they were around the same age and I did feel a bit intimidated. (I have no idea about schools in the area..but maybe theirs can be identified by the tie, perhaps they should know? I'm sure the police will sort that.)

well...If I wasn't confused by being confronted with crowds of naked people in a public place, I am now......

It is quite amazing! Honestly...it is very hard to know where to look! Nope...had not been drinking.....but it probably would have helped.

Has anyone else ever been on a tube train when all of a sudden loads of people get on and get naked?! Because this has now happened to me twice...I kid you not! First time was about two and a half months ago when i was still living in that Norf London....(I know, I know!) I was taking a mate back to Kings X when the train suddenly filled up with about 80 rowdy people, mostly men all dressed in funny costumes (spider man and the like) and started chanting "naked train"...before me and my stunned mate knew it- there were many, many man's bits and bobs hanging freely everywhere we looked. It was hilarious for about the first 5 seconds and then utterly horrifying. The tube is bad enough as it is but this was something else.....A couple of stops on, once the rest of us were suitably traumatised, they calmly dressed and got off. THEN...yesterday...there I am, slightly hungover on my way back to LB, when an almost identical thing occurs (with less people).....once again on that debauched Northern Line. At least this time i wasn't as shocked.....but on this occasion some of the men were even more offensive and I'm sure this is basically flashing! Anyway, as we don't have a tube in ED, I thought i'd let you all know for when you do get it, apparently, getting naked is becoming the thing to do! I'd be interested to hear what the hell it's all about if anyone knows?! Didn't seem organised enough to be a 'flash mob' thing.
