Help with Broadband Please (Altima Court)
EDKiwi replied to CD's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If you have a phone line into the place you usually at least should be able to get ADSL broadband over the phone lines, generally speaking unless you live in the middle of now where miles from an exchange you should be able to get broadband of some sort. Maybe she was confusing dial-up with broadband delivered via phone line as opposed to cable. -

Southern Gas Networks works on Barry Road
EDKiwi replied to LondonVillageLifer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yeah my landlord and the fella downstairs have been having a few debates with them about the placement of the boxes and piping outside, it does not look that nice, they agreed to put the box in a slightly less conspicuous place but still got a bright shiny pipe up the building. Apparently the pipes will be painted black by yet another group of contractors. BTW Our gas is still off....it's getting cold now :( -
Haven't really cycled in London but I'd say decent lights, maybe hi-vi clothing, oh and water proofs all seem like good ideas to me.

Southern Gas Networks works on Barry Road
EDKiwi replied to LondonVillageLifer's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think the main reason for the work is that the current gas main and feeds into the properties is starting to rot quite a bit, the guy I talked to said they lines were probably put in when the road was originally built, he pointed out the corrosion on the pipes outside our flat so I guess it's good they're doing it. They seem to be taking the chance to move the meters outside at the same time. He also said they had run into far more properties divided into flats than they anticipated, which is slowing things down quite a bit. Oh and yes, they're trying to work it so that each property is only without gas for a day at most as far as I have been told, our is off now so I hope it is only for the day.... -
Southern Gas Networks works on Barry Road

They're heading up towards the church, the fella I talked to last night reckoned they'd be finished up to the end just after the new year. Not sure if they will be then doing the other side of the road or what after that. -
Southern Gas Networks works on Barry Road

We're in Barry Road and our flat is going to be done this week, they're replacing the gas mains and feed lines into each flat/house with plastic pipes. It seems that if you're in a house (ie one dwelling, not split into flats) they are just running a new flexible pipe inside the current gas pipe and into the house with minimal disturbance. If you (like us) are a flat they are moving the gas meter out the front and running new gas lines up the outside of the building and into each flat separately, which isn't the nicest look. -
Yeah, damm US TV channels and their mid-season breaks, back March 4th in the US going by the ABC website. I don't understand why they do that in the States, it pretty much killed off Jericho a few years back just when it was getting good and the ratings never regained their inital numbers when it returned from its mid-season break.

Alrighty, I've decided it's high time I got myself a decent PC once again (moving into a bigger place with actual room for a desktop helps too..), but it's been a few years since I built my last decent gaming PC and things have moved on somewhat. In the past I've been an AMD and Nvidia man, but only because they seemed to be the best bang for buck at the time, it looks like the Intel i7 is a good bet now, but the graphics side of things is making my head hurt....what have people out there got, what do you reccomend? Nvidia, ATI, 2 cheaper cards in crossfire/SLI, one more expensive card? Is Nvidias PhysX worth it or just a short lived gimmick?

weee look at those numbers fly. I wonder how accurate their number if Illegal Immigrants is, I presume it's an educated guess.

oops, never mind then :)

Charity shops maybe? I'm sure I've seen purfume in some of the, not sure if it was used or not, they certainly weren't in mint condition though.

Well it's cold out anyways.... We've moved about London a bit, NW, East, Central and SW before ending up in East Dulwich and we love it, for us it's a good mix of being close in to central London but still having a nice suburban feel with nice green spaces, local shops and friendly people. There is a large baby population about tho, not that that worries us, Mrs Kiwi wants one of her own soonish so I guess that?s another plus for us.

Yes on both counts :)

My wife uses the Peckham Rye to London Bridge train then the Jubilee line to Canary Wharf, or the 185 bus to Lewisham then the DLR routes mentioned above, she finds it quite good having the DLR route as a backup for when the tube packs up.

Have to say I'm glad I only paid 26 quid, the campaign mission is rather short isn't it?

I thought it ironic that Simon Cowells response to Calvin Harris stage crashing Jedwards performance was that it was 'some idiot trying to get publicity'. Also noticed they didn't give Jedward any individual vocals in the cheesy charity single they did the other night, they all obviously know they can't sing to save themselves.

From the bit I skimmed through in the paper today, Katie Price is doing it because she first met Peter Andre in the jungle, and she 'wants closure'...if u believe that....I'm sure the money and the publicity have nothing to do with it...

Sorry, don't mean to lump all cyclist into the numptie basket, I do see plenty of cyclist every day who are sensible but of course it's the idiot things you see that stick in your mind. From what I see on a daily basis is not the cyclist who run red lights endangering pedestrians, but rather themselves as they weave in and out of the traffic crossing the intersection, and it scares the life out of you when one shoots through a red light in front of you, sure they have little chance of killing anyone except for themselves but it's still not fair on the poor sod who runs them over. Anyway sorry for hijacking the thread, and yes there are plenty of idiots in cars out there too who don't check their blind spots for cyclist, run lights, etc too.
-
I agree with that, my job means I drive around London quite a bit and the amount of times I've had to avoid cyclist running red lights in front of me, and they seemed surprised that a car is comming at them from the green light direction. Also why do some people cycle at night wearing dark clothing and with no lights? I almost clipped some idiot on a bike on the Elephant and Castle roundabout the other night, in the pouring rain, no lights, black clothing, in the middle of the lanes of traffic, it was only because I always check over my shoulders when turning/changing lanes that I saw them, but only at the last minute when I saw a flash of movement. By all means cycle if you wish but give yourself a fighting chance.

Residents Parking - Where God Art Thou
EDKiwi replied to thelittlebigvoice's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Definetly not worth it, I lived in Islington for a year and had to pay over 100 quid for a permit but still spent up to half an hour driving around the streets trying to find a park, often ending up quite a few blocks away from my flat. I find in East Dulwich I usually find a park either on my road or just around the corner and it's free.
