surly black cab drivers ! (not taking fares to ED)
Peckwich replied to spark67's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I don't tend to take black cabs but on the occasions that I have done they haven't had a problem with going to Peckham, although I do normally state my destination before getting in. In the past, it was quite possible to hail a black cab from Old Kent Road which we used to live within reasonable walking distance from. I do still see them on that road but not as much. I once got one back from Chelsea (posh work Xmas do). The driver got lost and I had to direct him from Kennington. Also gave him directions to get onto Old Kent Road (his face lit up in recognition at it's mention) as that was the easiest route back north of the river. -

A quick check of my junk mail box reveals: 'Perm.Peni1eGrowth` Not very creative.

Completely wrong terminology I guess. Just seems strange that someone would set one up when this forum is so popular and pretty much comes out at the top of most (if not all) search engines but maybe then that hasn't always been the case.

SE22.com I'm newish here so was this a breakaway forum? I discovered it through Facebook.

Those three 5:00pm posts made me chuckle.

Police and the number 40 bus
Peckwich replied to Flat of trouser's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This would be the seat in the little alcove behind the driver, right? We're not special enough to have one of those on the 63's. Our buses are furnished with greenflies on the windows though (what is up with that?) -
Speaking of Camberwell, there used to be a couple of free courts in Brunswick Park. A bit run down but just to add more options to the list.

Burgess Park courts were no longer free the last time I went there. They had undergone a refurbishment and had some extra courts added. I think it was ?10 for one hour (though my younger brother went to book it so they charged him children's rate) This was a number of years ago so it may have changed now. I play at Belair Park which are good courts and are free. Not sure if it is commonplace but the court etiquette there is to stay only for an hour unless there is no one waiting.

I wonder at the kind of people who steal plants. My mum had 2 large potted plants stolen from the front garden in the middle of the night. They would have been quite heavy to carry away. What do these people do with them? Care for them lovingly in their own home? How much money can they make to sell them on? Who would buy?

Not a very active forum though so posts are few and far between.

My close friends will say it's a nice area, nice houses, nice park, they like it and it gives me a nice warm feeling 'cos they approve. Acquaintances go, "ooh-er" and make me think they think I must be getting paid a lot (which really gets my goat as it couldn't be further from the truth. I'm only renting - haven't bought a mansion, Not that ED is full of mansions). Now if an acquaintance asks, I just say I live 'near Honor Oak' and they quickly lose interest (as no one knows where it is). When I lived in Peckham the general reaction would be, "I have a friend who lives there", nine times out of ten.

Sorry, a bit off topic but does anyone remember Murray's Meat Market on Rye Lane? Not sure if they were of a better standard than today's Rye Lane butchers (too young to be interested at the time) but my mum used to shop there a lot and it seemed extremely popular back in the day. Would spend ages waiting for her and bored out of my mind as the queue was always so long.

Whoops, I took so long to decide what to type that 2 people posted messages before me. This was in response to beaver's post.

police cordon tape seen on Barry Road
Peckwich replied to sweetgirl's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Haha, I saw it this afternoon and it made me chuckle. It reminds me of a thread on imdb.com in which numerous people posted to recount the time when the didn't meet Simon Pegg (since so many people had claimed to have met him). -
I think the problem with this system is that when you have doubts in your mind as to what the sign said when you got on the bus you'd rather touch in and pay up on the next bus than make a fuss to the driver and be told you are wrong. On the second occasion, I did neither as it was nice and sunny, I walked the rest of the way (but could I have really misread Peckham Rye as Honor Oak? Oh, the mystery).

Oh, you're probably right. There were three 63's in a row trundling along most of the way home which is a rare sight during rush hour, especially as 2 of them were near empty (doubly rare). Just seemed a bit strange that it hasn't happened in the 7 or so months I've been doing this commute (apart from snow day) and all of a sudden 3 times in 2 weeks...I thought it was a ploy to get us prepayers to cough up more. Driver wouldn't give me a transfer either and the 363 in front was packed. Nice lady driver on the next bus believed me though.
-
Why in the last 2 weeks has the 63 buses been changing it's southbound terminal destination unexpectedly? First couple of times I thought I'd imagined seeing Honor Oak on the board. Today I checked to make sure before I got on then the driver kicked us all off at Peckham Rye.

Sally, I'm newish to East Dulwich and agree with the person who said that no one is going to post about the time they walked from the bus stop and nothing happened. I moved here around the time that postings on incidents on Barry Road began appearing. Starting with a crash involving an Ikea lorry! If it hadn't been for this forum I would not even have heard about it. My point is that I haven't lived in another area which has such an active internet forum, thus you will hear stories like this you would otherwise be unaware of. I moved here from Peckham (hence my imaginative username) and if it had an internet forum as active and informative as this one I don't think I would have been able to step foot out the door. -
I was woken up at around 4am last winter to what sounded like a woman screaming. Lay in bed for the first 20 seconds with my heart pounding and trying to make out if, like Penguin suggests, there were any words. Soon realised that the screams weren't quite human. Then realised it could only be a fox (had only recently moved to this area so had never heard foxes like this before). Went to peek out the window and the fox was sitting in the middle of the road, on it's lonesome, making this horrible sound.
