We live in a house on Underhill, applied for planning, officer ace round. Adviced we would b tuned down but volumes would b allowed under permitted development. Worth phoning them. The guy had just started working in Souhwark and said they were much stricter here

Relatively speaking ?18 million is quite a small amount of money. It sounds huge to domestic people such as ourselves but to provide food, counselling, daily staff, food vouchers etc to the large numbers they get is quite astonishing. And she's not poor, she is very honest about that. The kindnesses she receives aren't because she needs it but it is society's way of saying we like you doing this. I couldn't be as brave as her, would not have had financial backing or known where to start. Also, as a woman from Tehran she could have gone anywhere. Why London? Sad that we need her....

Honor Oak normally have one ( though always slightly spoiled by the ugly barriers surrounding it) by the station -

Just to say I've seen bobbys on the beat every few weeks since a spate of burglerys last year. They may/ not be more frequent but I'm not home consistently. Admittedly mainly day time but I had a chat with one and he was very keen to catch the folk and people to report quite innocuous things to facilitate this. So even if they've gone they can have a drive around. They frequently have a good idea who they are looking for and it's unlikely they would have got far -
Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible

Also try around Ladywell. Again a hill but walking distance to Ladywell station and DLR in Lewisham. Feels safe at night. In terms of why ED gone up so much, it was the perceived better area in SE London and then all the surrounding areas got the overground. People who would never have considered Honor Oak, Sydnham, Penge, Crystal Palace, forest Hill,Brockley and Peckham before now would and often having been displaced themselves from trendy east London, balham etc they are making the move this direction. ED still perceived the more desirable area so prices have climbed.... -
There was a spate of burglaries earlier this year. Our neighbour foiled an attempt on our house. Then it was Underhill, seems they are setting a wider net this time....

The service is bad.... Though having eaten their award winning sandwich, the award is deserved. Also, in my experience they don't discriminate against parents and children. They seem fairly equally rude to all. Desperately wanted it to be better but no. If around Bellenden, stick to the steady, friendly Petitou or Cafe Viva - much better service and they are genuinely pleasant

What happened this morning at Le Chardon?
JDR replied to Dulwich Born And Bred's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm a community physio and have seen machetes, guns, standard kitchen knives bing used for ill effect ( not against me thankfully) The joys of inner city living - people do the unexpected. If they travel in packs, I don't blame them... -
Brilliant! The mistake and maxi ;-)

This is dragging an old thread up but for anyone interested Dr Crane is being remembered by Southwark with other people and families who lived and worked in the area. I have just returned from the naming of John Crane street which is a new build of the regeneration of the Aylesbury estate. His wife Penny made a small speech alongside other families who are being remembered in this way. His wonderful memory will live on

Water bubbling up from the ground on the North Cross Road
JDR replied to CocoC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Unfortunately Thames water are slow to respond with this type of complaint. I work in a local ( ish ) health centre and the same happened. They failed to respond to the road that lifted up and cracked and the calls we made. It was only when the electrics in the health centre started failing and eventually the fire brigade were called who declared the centre unsafe and closed the road did they attend -
Unfortunately a side effect of old camber well cemetery work was they pulled most of the bushes from there.... Slim pickings We're going to try Dulwich woods, but no idea if any good

more work scheduled for Camberwell Old Cemetery

U fortunately if there is a knotweed problem, they will need to use strong chemicals as otherwise if it spreads t adjacent property and causes damage they will be financially culpable. There are issues with home insurance and house purchases with regards t this and the law is pretty clear ( and quite frightening if you have it!) Also, despite the wildlife there is a human issue of where do the bodies go? The cemety is a great place and as much as I'd like to prioritise the wildlife, it isn't always practicable or possible. -

The schools new website address http://www.stjohnsandstclements.org/ That gives all term dates ad uniform policy. Regarding pe kits, they don't bother with reception initially as too hard getting them dressed so don't worry about kit yet. They also recommend Velcro shoes initially for ease. Shout if we can help with anything else -
I have three, very close ages. The adages given are true, the ages your children are, are the best. My littlest, now 5, will always be my baby as she and I know she is the last. So whilst being a big girl she now can wait longer before needing breakfast, is fully toilet trained, no buggy, yet still wants cuddles both during the day and most importantly in our house the am cuddle - she send me back to bed if she's not had a cuddle in bed first :-) Certainly appreciate each moment but don't refract it's passing. There are definite pluses and minuses to every age. Enjoy x

Hi We have children already there and you should have heard before now unless you were a late offer? All schools ( we were elsewhere for elders first 2 years) give short time scales. There is normally a (IMO) quite protracted settling period but you will find it difficult now to find out about as they are on holiday. Miss Harwood is the leader for early years and is very good. I'll probably see you in the playground -
Quite righty the costs should come from Thames Water and their insurers if news reports are correct. Current estimate 4 million. Wether that includes a true compensation for lost business though....

JDR replied to bookhopper's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My children have been with their nursery before and loved it.... They also have plans to expand that I've heard about so they are hoping to increase their numbers. -
It's nearly the end of term but in case anyone is looking. My three children attend and have since 2.5 years. Pretty relaxed dance school but also do RAD exams ( mine all did one this morning) Despite the Cambridge address they are held on Saturday mornings at Harris girls school. Pretty much everyone who starts there stays too... Those in the know travel from Hither Green and Brockley. Miss Megan is a delight Harris Girls school classes run by Evelyn Hunter Dance Academy 10 Cambridge Rd Abington Cambridge CB21 6BL Tel: 01223 893971/ 079 46700191 term ends July 13th

Otta - that made me and my husband laugh! SCSB79 You say behave about calling it racism. I've been followed whilst groups have called me names and had abuse all my life based on nothing more than my hair colour. I've been in tears at times and had to go not shops to ask for assistance. As I said, people often dismiss it as banter but the surely any form of name calling/ opinions being given based on appearance or characteristics that you don't choose but are born with, that is racism/ discrimination? Perhaps you have been lucky enough to not have random strangers call you names about your appearance throughout your life but unfortunately that's not been mine....

I think she's crackers. On a personal note I was also upset by her jibes on Facebook about ginger babies ( I am ginger with three little gingers) and her comment ' ginger babies, like normal babies but harder to love' I found really terrible. I'm aware ginger ism is th last form of acceptable racism... ( interestingly friends from ethnic minorities have huge issues with the shit I take bout being red haired, white English claim its banter- discuss?). She is horrible, we should just discourage programmes from giving her screen time.
