Agree re Spice Republic, lard but unforch we had a very disappointing one last time. Really hoping it was just a glitch but am not quite ready to place another order in case things have gone downhill which would frankly be unbearable. Would like to try Omrith - do they have a website?
-
I did have a large glass Keef but it's never been as expensive as that before. They have a 'wine list' now which comprises about 3 different types. A wine list in the CPT, who'd have thunk it!
-
Last time I was in there the same order came to about ?7.50. ?1.50 rise in about a week seems a bit steep even in these hard times!

I know the lovely Aussies have left and there are new staff. They've been doing some work on the interior in the front bar - fancy wallpaper and paintwork. All fine I suppose. However, went in last night and was charged an astonishing ?9 for a pint of lager, large glass of white wine and packet of peanuts. When I queried the cost the guy behind the bar said they'd be looking into the prices as others had complained. Not surprised - I think you'd be hard pushed to pay that much in the West End. It's a shame as it's our local and I've always been happy with it but at those prices they won't be seeing me. I'd rather go down the Uppy and get a drink at a more reasonable price.

Oh dear Otto, as a fellow tortoise owner, I do sympathise. We lost ours quite a few times in the early days (they're great diggers) but they always turned up. Best of luck to you.

Did anyone else not get a polling card?
Xanadustar replied to Crepe Suzette's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I didn't get one either, although hubby received his postal vote in good time. Rang Southwark and they advised me to take my passport and a utility bill with me. Bit rubbish frankly, this hasn't happened before. -
I'd quite like a chameleon. Friends in Forest Hill have vast quantities of snakes, lizards and the odd spider (shudder!).

Hello fellow forumites. I'm an occassional poster on this board but follow it with interest, it's a great place to find out what's going on. Anyway, I just wondered if anyone in the area owned any weird and wonderful animals. We have 3 horsefield toroises (and are also owned by two cats). Any fellow tortoise owners out there? Or do you keep any other non-mammalian/unusual pets?

Glad to hear she's still around but sorry she's not in full ghost apparel anymore (well, not if her mental health issues have been sorted natch, but she was sch a startling and impressive figure). And I think I recall hearing similar stories about Dennis of the Y Fumes house in Camberwell so there must be some fact in there somewhere.

back on the move: window cleaning scam!!!
Xanadustar replied to paps's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Bloke called Steve came knocking at our house in Silvester Road this morning. We declined his offer to clean our windows so thanks to the thread for alerting us to the scam (if it's the same bloke of course and not an innocent window cleaner!) -
SIlvester if you please!

I haven't seen her for ages - anyone old enough to remember the pint nicker of Camberwell who used to tour the pubs of SE5, (but the Pheonix Firkin was his main one) in the summer and just go up to a table and grab a pint and drink it before your eyes, of course once you were in the know you'd grab yours and wait for chaos to ensure at another table....thing he was probably killed sometime in the 1980s! Ha ha ????, I remember the Pint Snatcher at the Phoenix. We were reminiscing about him just the other week. Also remember the Camberwell Ghost (as I knew her by). Anyone remember the Y Fumes guy who used to live on Camberwell Church Street in what looked like a derelict house? It was converted a while ago but I think he was around for a while.

other famous people seen at east dulwich sainsburys

Hubby spotted the coach of the women's England football team in there a couple of weeks ago (Google tells me here name is Hope Powell). -
'A couple of years ago poor old George who ran the little post office on the corner of Pellat Road got shot about a week before they were due to close up and retire! Fortunately he was okay, but if ever there was a nice shop keeper who didn't deserve that sh!t it was him!' I remember that day well as it was the day before I got married and I live very close to the PO. Came back from having my nails done and my road was cordoned off. Boiling hot day and the poor copper must have been melting. I'm so glad to hear that the owner was OK, althogh I hate to think what emotional damage he and his family have suffered. The Post Office do not look after people who have been victims of this sort of crime and treat them appalingly so it's no wonder that the shop is now no more.

ooh, I heard the lady on Fivelive as well and was hoping someone would know more about it on here. They managed to rustle up Patrick Moore who said it was probably weather baloons which is patently nonsense.

I saw Huw Edwards two days ago. Be still, my beating heart. Where did you see the lovely Huw?

'Indeed, one of the main reasons that the Golden City closed is because an establishment called the Sea Cow opened just a quarter of a mile away in 2003.' Hmm, somewhat disingenuous methinks. I've been living in ED for 10 years and the Golden City hasn't been open since I moved here and probably a long time before that.

Ghosts in Houses ? New Builds vs Period Properties.
Xanadustar replied to Brendan's topic in The Lounge
Excellent thread and thank you Brendan, it really is fascinating. I wonder how many haunted hoses there are in ED, given the large amount of Victorian properties in the srea. Not that I think haunted houses necessarily have to old but I guess many people have lived and dies in these houses and perhaps something gets left behind. Personally I don't suffer from the sensitvity which obviously afflicts you, and am quite glad about this TBH. However, I am open minded that such phenomena exist and am always really interested to hear these experiences first hand. Anyone else have any ghostly tales? PS I feel that this thread should be happening at Christmas time whilst we're all sitting round a virtual crackling log fire! The MR James collection is seldom out of my hands during the yuletime festival. Mwahahahahahahahahah. -
Me and the old man went in on opening night and were very impressed with the garden and exlusive de-luxe smoking area. Unforch we also had to witness the removal of a singularly unpleasnt individual who hadn't seemed to realise that smoking in public places is now illegal, along with this coterie of other ASBO types. Shame really as apart from that it was rather pleasant!
-
Might give it another go then, but as a dedicated nicotene addict, I did find my enjoyment of tobacco in their wonderful facilities was tempered by the loud and uncouth noise, cackling and general unpleasnt atmosphere emanating from some of the die-hards.
-
Wow Brenden, do share....
-
Erm, I really don't mind the wine in the CPT. Sure they haven't got a wine list but I'm quite happy to quaff away at whatever they give me. Maybe my palate is particularly uncultured!
-
What has become of the chavscum? Have they relented and given up or are they still hanging around being loud and anti-social?
-
Nicknames should be short and preferably end in "ee" so its got to be Lordy. How cool would it be to twin with Lordi the death rock Finnish former Eurovision winners? NB I'm not Xanadustar just her old fella formerly known as Anon (Bloody Lurker). Back to the Shadows for me - be good......

Went to have a look last night and agree with everything Dulwich Park Fairy said really. They are obviously trying hard to change the image of the place and it's nice inside and out (and they've made an effort for the smokers which I'msure will be appreciated!) But it looks like the old clientele haven't got the message and are still hanging around being lairy. We saw one guy being kicked out after he came in from the garden fag in hand and made a fuss when they told him it was non-smoking (as if he didn't know!) I think they need a couple of big burly bouncers to hang around for a few weeks and hopefully they would see these unsavour types off once and for all. Not sure about the staff. They seemed a bit rabbit in headlights although that could be first night jitters I suppose. The old man wonders if some staff might have been retained as he heard one of them ask one of the punters 'where are you facking going?! at the top of her voice. Anyway, I think this could be a good pub IF they manage to get rid of the undesirables. I wish them luck!
