  1. The thing is, you WILL get used to it. I thought I never would, but I've been in SE22 for sixteen years and I barely notice the noise any more. Sometimes in the morning, I hear them and I think, ah, it must be six AM, as the planes have started, but then I go back to sleep. I used to live in SE5 back in the day, and we used to get Concorde going over at 17.30 every day - wild.
  2. until
Live comedy every Wednesday, 7.30 PM. OFF THE CUFF, next to Herne Hill Station. Free entry - pay what you like after the show.
  3. We haven't had post for about two weeks - birthday cards missing (I assume!) magazines not showing up. We're on Belvoir Road. Anyone else nearby had any post recently?
  4. I was exiting the ED PictureHouse recently. I held the door open for a couple coming in with at least one buggy (can't remember if it was more than that). They breezed past me without even looking at me or acknowledging me or thanking in me in any way. Standard operating procedure on LL?
  5. Another recommendation for Niko. He sorted out our bathroom and kitchen taps. Great guy, does the job, doesn't charge a fortune.
  6. Go for it. The lamp-post chargers are slow, but they are very reliable, in my year-and-a-bit of experience. The char:gy app works fine once you've registered with it. You will soon get into the habit of charging overnight if that suits, or poddling around ED looking for available chargers! I never had much luck with Source London, and cancelled my card with them. There is a rapid charger at the Tessa Jowell medical centre. No doubt there are others, too. apbremer - there's loads of information out there about the effects of weather on range and performance. Bad weather definitely reduces your range, but has had no effect on my car's performance whatsoever.
  7. Whereabouts are you? There are quite a few lamp-post chargers around. In my experience the one in my street has always worked. Also a lot of faster charging points, e.g. at Sainsbury's Forest Hill. I have never got the "free" ones at Sainsbury's DKH to work for me. There is a rapid-charger (Osprey) at Tessa Jowell Health Centre. I have used this once, but since then it has been faulty, for me at least.
  8. Thanks - that's worth knowing
  9. Anyone know what it's like in the evneings? Also - if you are clicking and collecting your Sainsbury's grocery order, do you have to queue? Thanks!
  10. Anyone know VICTORIA HUTCHINGS? We have had mis-delivered to us a parcel for her. The delivery company don't seem to care, and we've got better things to do than take it the post office and try and return to sender. PM me and we can try and get it to the person who actually wants it. Merry Christmas!
  11. "someone should remind the speeding cyclists....I'm dreading the new 'healthy streets'." Me too. I much prefer tons of metal zooming up and down, emitting toxic fumes, destroying the environment, using up the earth's finite resources, killing our children, shortening all our lives. God, yes, give me that instead of "healthy streets" any day of the week. "Healthy streets"? Do me a favour.
  12. Seconded. Excellent place. Bring your own booze.
  13. Polite notice: pointing out the error in "the car appears to of mounted the pavement" is not "pedantry".
  14. I too hope that nobody was seriously hurt. That white car was pretty shocking to see yesterday as I cycled past. Lordship Lane is 20 MPH from Goose Green to Belvoir Road where it suddenly becomes 30 MPH. Not that 20 MPH seems to mean much to most drivers. Yesterday I was tootling along at 20 and had a black cab behind me flashing his lights and hooting at me all the way from the Library to Mrs. Robinson. Yes, coming the other way towards Belvoir you get lunatics using the bus lane at high speed (not even 30) to undercut drivers actually obeying the speed limit. If one of those drivers is turning left into Belvoir... well...
  15. Yes, central London at the weekend can be the quickest route, and no congestion charge. We often come down to Swiss Cottage from the M1, then Regents Park (always deserted) then down to Oxford Circus, then cut across to Park Lane, then down to Vauxhall. This can all be time-consuming but still better than the North/South Circular or (shudder) M25
  16. For the record, I am not "worrying about how make money from [my] unwanted clothes as opposed to being upset at the loss of a way to donate to a worthwhile charity." I happily and regularly give clothes/books/DVDs to the many and varied charity shops on Lordship Lane and elsewhere. I maintain that Give + Take was a posh charity shop with a vague business model and ludicrously expensive stock. But, of course, good for them if they've given money to breast cancer charities.
  17. Is this the 'posh' charity shop near Goose Green? The only surprise is that it lasted so long.
  18. Just saying it's very narrow, that's all. Anyway, I look forward to PictureHouse developments with interest and enthusiasm.
  19. I am totally in favour of the project, and can't wait for it to happen. My only query is about the viability of the seating at the front of the building, as shown in that image. Hard to imagine actually sitting in that quite narrow space, enjoying a cup of English Breakfast, while traffic whizzes up and down LL, and passers-by pass by a few inches away. Otherwise, a resounding thumbs-up from me.
  20. East Dulwich Deli is hilarious. You get the feeling they're doing you a favour by selling you their overpriced cakes/olives etc. We take great pleasure in visiting just after Christmas to pay bargain prices for their delicious chocolates. Oh, and I once nipped in there for a (very expensive) pint of milk (desperate times, indeed) and when I got it home, it was off.
  21. OK, it's not set in East Dulwich, but it's written by someone who is. If you see what I mean. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Night-Mellor-Went-Mad-ebook/dp/B0077PJFT8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329306625&sr=8-1 Get it FREE for the next three days, for your Kindle, smartphone, PC, etc. Review it, rate it, let me know what you think. There's more to come over the next few months. Cheers Figgins
  22. Just for the record, you don't need a "smart" phone. A "dumb" phone will also do it, if you know the code of the bus stop. Txt the bus stop code to 87287. More info here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/11560.aspx And, yes, I agree: it's a very good and very accurate service.
  23. "I wonder what the balance sheet looks like - collection, salaries etc versus income. I doubt it's that much of a cash cow" Maybe Southwark council could publish the figures. For all I know, they already do. Anyone know?
  24. www.notomob.co.uk I hate these stupid little cars. The council clearly is not interested in stopping bad driving/speeding/illegal parking. On the contrary, it wants it to continue and even increase, because it is a source of revenue. If they wanted to reduce it, they would have signs up warning you that the camera car was around. How much of the council's annual budget comes from speeding tickets, parking tickets, "yellow-box-offence" tickets, etc.? They rely on this money. If everyone suddenly stopped speeding, stopped getting parking fines etc. they would be in trouble. And we are paying for it - twice. We pay for the car and the staff to be employed (and to tell us to mind our own business) and we pay when we get fined.
  25. Do they misspell "you're" on that one, as well?
