I’m not sure exactly. I think it was a few years of on and off at the beginning until I found solutions. I noticed that it was especially difficult for me when there were other issues in my life which were making me more anxious (eg cancer) and more sensitive to irritants. I think you’re on the right track with therapy, and maybe give a shot to hypnotherapy as Peckhampam said. At this point it’s no longer a question of decibels but of psychology.

I moved in the area in 2012 and found the plane noise very annoying. I would be woken up most mornings by the sound of the first planes coming in from Asia around 4:30am. I became quite anxious, as the harder I would try to go to sleep and to ignore the plane noise, the more awake I would become. I remember trying to get back to sleep after a plane passed, getting almost there and then feeling defeated as I could hear the very faint whine of the next plane approaching. I’m pleased to say that I’m not bothered anymore, although I did notice how lovely and quiet the skies were during COVID lockdowns. Some advice I can share which may or may not work for you: - it’s a psychological battle with yourself. You will get used to it eventually but it’s not easy, as you can get into a vicious circle of anxiety quit easily. Anything you can do to get you on a virtuous circle of relaxation will help you assuage the fear, which will reduce the anxiety, which means you’re less likely to wake up / be alerted, and so on - For a while, Iused ear plugs as a cheap and quick way to eliminate the problem. The Moldex Spark are my favourite. I don’t need them any more, but knowing I have them in my bedside table is now sufficient for me to be relaxed and sleep through any noise. I now take them everywhere with me, for example on the plane or in a hotel, as they give me peace of mind that if there’s a crying baby during a long flight or a noisy neighbour, I will have a solution. The peace of mind is the crucial point to avoid spiralling towards anxiety. - we had our crappy old windows changed for high quality double glazing and it massively reduced all the noises inside the house, including airplane noise. - we also put in honeycomb blinds (like Luxaflex Duette), which have the dual benefit of adding both temperature and sound insulation to your windows. They also super easy to pull up and down with the finger pull and no wires. I hope this helps.

Oh no! I wonder why this happened. As you say, I really hope they continue to have high quality and choice of produce, it's my favourite shop on the whole street.

I believe you're referring to SELDOC aka South East London Doctors Cooperative, a GP co-operative to provide out of hours primary care to patients across SE London

New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham - 2024 Edition

Does know what is the new shop next to the Palmerston, where Dulwich Café used to be? Looks like they're ready to open (if not open already) -
Does SMBS foods stock ostrich eggs?
ArchieCarlos replied to Nikki J's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I’ve seen them in Bora. Also goose eggs being sold there and by the egg lady at the North Cross Rd market on Saturday. I’ve cooked with goose eggs (delicious soft boiled) but how do you use ostrich ones? -
Moped crash scams around Barry Road/Underhill/Goodrich
ArchieCarlos replied to Katie B a's topic in Roads & Transport
Hi Katie, I'm sorry to hear what happened to you. I have been worried something like this might happen to me and so I've had dash & rear cameras from Nextbase (https://nextbase.co.uk/dash-cams/) installed in my car. It cost me £160 + about £50 for a professional installation. No wires visible, no need to charge it (it's plugged into the car) and peace of mind should something like this happen. It turns on/off automatically when I start/switch off the car, and it also activates automatically if your car is parked and someone bumps into it. I like that I don't need to do anything with it, but it's there if I ever need it. -
So the central idea proposed is: Do we really believe that once the Treasury collects money from fines, they will be so much more altruistic than the council? They are not. The central government grants to councils have been reduced by 40% in real terms between 2009/10 and 2019/20, from £46.5bn to £28bn in 2023/24 prices. Councils are trying to compensate through various means, including squeezing drivers. Meanwhich councils are still on the hook for elderly care, road maintenance, etc. Once the Treasury gets a sniff of traffic contravention money, it will be like crack cocaine: they will want more and more of it and demand councils install more traffic cameras to feed them more of that sweet contravention money. This is what is happening in France for example where central government gets the speed camera money and pushes local authority to install more and more of them.. The way I see it: not only will it fail to reduce the number of fines levied on the people of Southwark, but the money generated will be taken out of the local community and we will have even less say about the whole thing than we do now.

Haha it’s a bit like saying you have a problem paying £800k for a 3-bed house in ED given it costs £80k in Denbighshire -
New Shops in Dulwich / Peckham - 2024 Edition

We tried Viet Flavours yesterday. They opened a few days ago next to Franco Manca on LL and are doing 20% off until the end of the month. Food was very good and fresh, perfect for the warm weather of late. They have a nicely decorated room and service was friendly. Prices are on the higher end but not that different from others in the area (opening discount well worth it). We liked that they have the classics (Pho, Banh Mi, Bun Bo Hue, Vietnamese coffee, etc.) but also some dishes more rarely seen (crispy pancakes, anchovy chicken wings, tamaring fish, Saigo/Hoian rice place). Lots of veggie options too. We will be coming back. -
We hear so many stories about police not dealing with crimes quickly enough or at all, so it's nice to read they've done a really good job finding the suspects and all the evidence needed to charge them in just a few days.

Sorry, here's the zoomed in version -
I saw this on the corner of Chadwick Road today, which elicited a chuckle. I feel sorry for the author but admire the production quality.

A new bakery is opening in Herne Hill called Bunhead Bakery on Sunday. It’s on the side of Brockwell Park, at 145 Dulwich Rd The website doesn’t say much but says they do sourdough with Palestinian flavours, which could be interesting. -
How do dispose of sharps bins
ArchieCarlos replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thank you for your replies all. Elloriac, I followed your advice: I filled out the form and they said they would collect today. So I left the sharps bins on my front door last night, with a not like you said and this morning they were all gone! Fantastic. -
I feel like I need a 'Rory Stewart' style quick explanation on the debate around Dulwich LTN. Would anyone have any pointers to a balanced summary? I'm moving to the village soon and I feel like I need to understand this better given the strength of sentiment expressed on some of these threads. Any help appreciated!

Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
ArchieCarlos replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think you're imagining too much into this. I've never heard of 'Theweekend' (unless my wife is posting without me knowing!) I find it disappointing that you automatically assume I'm either stupid (can't cook!) or evil (on a vendetta against a shop). I'm not sure what you think my motive might be, but I've no animosity towards that shop. It's not very nice when you share an experience on this forum and old timers brigade you, dismiss what you say and blame you for something unpleasant that that happened to you. Imagine if this was you. Personally, I think their chicken thigh supplier is not good. I used to shop in Smithfield and I know most butchers just buy them in 5kg tubs. Voila. -
Hi, I have a few filled and empty sharps bins to dispose of. My GP has filled out a form for the council and they've come to us while we were away, left two large sharps bins and no instructions. Would any of you know what to do? In the meantime I've gained another two empty sharps bins to add to my collection... Many thanks

I asked the same question in this forum a few months ago, as my wife wanted to learn to drive but was quite nervous after having had sessions with someone very stressful. The recommendation we saw most often was Silvano, which she's been very happy with and who has helped her build her confidence. You can read more recommendations for him here

Food poisoning at Dugard & Daughters - twice!
ArchieCarlos replied to ArchieCarlos's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's not libel. I am reporting my experience and asking if anyone else has experienced the same. The purpose of this website is all about sharing positive and negative recommendations of local businesses and traders. Chicken was cooked through, I always check it. It was kept in the sealed styrofoam tray in the fridge at 4 degrees. I even have a separate little thermometer inside my fridge to be sure the temperature is in the right place. I haven't kept the leftovers, and threw the second packet (which I had frozen) away. I may well be very unlucky, but being sick twice after eating chicken from there has certainly put me off. My wife is pregnant and I just don't want to take the risk. It's a shame as I like the shop and make a point of using independents (I haven't bought meat, fish or veg in a supermarket in 2+. years). I will shop for meat in Ginger Pig, William Rose and Flock & Herd. -
I would advise against Dragon Castle. It's overpriced and really not that high quality (one dish came to me only half defrosted), with excruciatingly slow service. After going there 3 times, we've given up. Instead I would recommend some of the many new Chinese places which have cropped up on E&C: Pot & Rice (Taiwanese), Murger Han (Xi'an food), Oisoi (Jiangnan cuisine, more high-end) and so on.
