  1. Fellow sufferers, Absolutely sick to death of continuous aircraft noise and have written to Boris Johnson in the past about not wanting the third runway at Heathrow. Have sent off a similar letter to our new mayor, but just read somewhere that he's for the expansion of the airport. I also read that when the development does go ahead the increase in business and tourism will 'make every family in the country ?24,000 a year better off' Well that's all right then. Although things will be much worse, at least I will have a nice big check coming through the post! Hooray for Khan- saviour of the common people of London!
  2. jo1973, Keep up your good work as a volunteer; the shop is an asset to Lordship Lane and there is a great range of designer clothes there. Unfortunately, after emailing the management of the chain of shops about how much money was spent on them, I cannot see how there is any profit left for Save the Children at the end of the day, unless your shopfitters are volunteers too? The rent there must be high and utility costs plus business rates. If there's nothing left, is it just PR for Mary Portas? Sorry to be cynical, but after what went on at Kids Co, there's bound to be doubt. Cheers.
  3. aerie, I agreed about the ML&G shop showing us their takings/profits. I recently received an annual statement from the St Christopher's Hospice charity showing me how much my donations has raised including the VAT claimed back - a very satisfying result. I did register with ML&G, last year, but never got details from them of what they made from my donations. Is it all just a lot of PR for Mary Portas - who knows? Cheers and happy shopping.
  4. The shop is now open but I did contact the Save the Children charity about why so much work was being done to the shop after only two and a half years of it being opened. Obviously, more running costs, expenses, etc, mean less profits = money for the needy. It seems that they have been caught out by the landlords and say that they have to carry out 'structural work' required in their contract and are making alterations to improve staff facilities. I told them that, personally, I was wary of charities after the scandal of the decline of Kids Co, for example, and hoped that they were 'doing a good job'. My wife and I have given our most valuable second hand items to them in the past, but not sure if we will from now on. What finished it for me was learning that Save the Children had contrived to give an award to Tony Blair to boost his image when he needed it! Cheers.
  5. Given the scandal over Volkswagen fiddling their emission figures and taking a look at all of the new larger cars on the roads now, it makes you wonder what pollution levels really are. If you compare the latest Porsche 'people carrier', with it's huge quad exhausts, to a 1960's mini or a Renault 4 for example, how come the old cards have such tiny exhaust pipes if they emit bigger emissions? I suppose it IS rocket science - what's the answer Mr Khan? Cough, cough, that's all for now.
  6. I worked on the restoration of the mural in 2010 and it got a coating of anti-graffiti film on the lower section. What you might see today is the second lot of tags that sprung up recently, the first ones were cleaned off by (I assume) the council. I don't know how many times that the council will carry on cleaning it up though, but at least it can be done. Funny how all of the other 'posh' pieces of street art around ED that are based on paintings in Dulwich Art Gallery haven't been hit so badly. Could the tagging really be the work of middle class intellectuals? And on that bombshell!
  7. Make the most of the peace and quiet until the wind is back in it's usual SW direction then we're in for the our 15 hours a day of flights every 1.6 minutes on average. Interesting to hear the chief exec of Heathrow (or whoever?) on the radio this week talking about the wonders of the new third runway that he's looking forward to. All the new jobs, boost to economy, etc. Pity us 10s of 1000s of Londoners having our lives messed up by the noise - but we don't count. Seems like we really have no right to quietness, it's all about other people making money.I wonder where the new flight paths will be? A lot of people are in for a shock if and when it happens. Still, I suppose it's my own fault for moving here 36 years ago. I should have known that, one day, this quiet part of London, twenty miles from Heathrow, would end up like living next to an airfield or a sawmill! But, nobody warned me. Stand by for take off - pip pip!
  8. It's the Mods and Rockers days all over again-form a gang and get on the streets but today we have Social Media to organise it better. How the police will will deal with it, who knows? Ever see any police around? Rev it up! Cheers!
  9. Hi magnificentstan, I saw the blokes last year and complained to the council about spraying the pavements outside our house with pesticides. I avoid chemicals in the home and in the food that I eat, so was not happy about it at all. I pointed out that if they were so harmless why was the person spraying, fitted out with mask, boots and protective clothing? They were spraying on windy day too, so blowing spray into homes and gardens. After re-sending the email a couple of times, I eventually was asked to supply my 'phone number so that they could call me. I told them that I would just like a simple statement about the chemicals used by them on the streets as a response to my enquiry. I'm still waiting for an answer, but don't hold my hope of getting one! Cheers.
  10. A James Bond season to start off the new Picturehouse;- Dr No Way (20th March.) Thunderballs-Up. Never Say Never (but when?) View to a Drill ( and blokes in hard hats with other gear). D(i)elay Another Day. Must be like that science fiction classic in there - The Day The Earth Stood Still. Cheers - and may the farce be with you.
  11. Hi, Latest update on this subject - this time in Camberwell Old Cemetery this morning. Walking along Wood Vale, I saw a young women standing on the path and letting a medium-sized dog loose for a run around the graves. She obviously did'nt want to get her feet wet on the grass. After a while, sure enough, the dog 'did it's business' next to one of the graves, chased some birds around, then went back to it's owner, who put it on the lead and went off home. Absolutely true; I was too far away to go over and have word with her, but it would have been too threatening for her, probably. How disrespectful can you get! I expect that someone will tread in it when they visit their relatives grave this Christmas! Season Greetings to all.
  12. Dear All, Sorry about using upper case for the title, I didn't think about the agreed format for titles - too furious at the time! The example that I gave was definitely not fox poo, that has a distinctive smell. Very surprised to hear about the council coming around to clear in up, but they have in fact had a fleet of sweepers out today so this lot should be gone now. Cheers, thanks and Seasons Greetings to everyone.
  13. Hi Mustard, Fellbrigg Road, off North Cross Road is where I saw the 'defaced signs', but the dog poo problem is spread around ED. By the way, I was dog owner myself for over 10 years and walked both of them around ED and the Rye often, clearing up using old carrier bags before the council provided bins and free bags. Both dogs had long lives and passed away peacefully; they now have graves in the garden. I like cats too, so I'm not a pet hater. Trouble is with the situation, is that there are no 'bobbies on the beat' anymore to see this going on and as for tackling the dog owners yourself - well you could get into serious trouble! Thanks.
  14. Hi, I do noticed that dog owners continue to let their dogs mess on the pavements, with no regard for children, the elderly and the blind and I've even seen it at the gates of primary school nearby. However, today I saw the ultimate insult - three different piles of muck right next to the 'Bag it' sign stenciled on the pavement! Well to whomever that was (you probably don't have the savvy to be on the forum, anyway) are you having a laugh? Is it some sick way to cause trouble for the people around here? Anyway, one day I might 'lose it' if I see someone doing it, which won't do me any good. Cheers all.
  15. pato, You should get to the cinema more - get out and see the Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes films! Sign up for the new one, when opens, maybe? By the way folks, I am absolutely sure that I was in the queue in The Cheese Block one Saturday behind Terry Jones(from Monty Python!).Can't remember which year though - 1983 or'84? Cheers.
  16. rgutsell, Please explain what your problem is with the BECTU union, they must have strong reasons to take stike action.
  17. cjohnson66, I have raised the issue of the latest use of spraying weedkillers on our street with Southwark - about a month ago. Haven't had a response on the subject so far and still chasing them for one. Very glad to have all above info' on the subject; very useful to know. Cheers.
  18. Councillor Hamvas, I would disagree with your point about the One O'Clock Club, in that, the staff working there now do a great job with a very old building. Inside it is in good condition, clean and tidy, with very good play and learning facilities for young children. Ok, so back in the 1980s it was even better with four staff and more facilities for the parents and carers, but it has certainly improved now that it is managed by a different department of the council. What does need urgent attention and is not fit for purpose is the new playground in front of the One O'Clock Club. Someone must have pointed out to you that the costly 'Play River' never did work, as water simply doesn't not run uphill and that part of the facility proved to be a waste of money from the start! It might be an idea to get the architects (who have removed that project from their website) and/or the building contractors to put it right at their own expense before anyone starts considering spending large sums of money on more new buildings on the Rye. Regards.
  19. Zak and KidKruger, A real shame that the work has gone - probably house owner (or landlord) want's their nice clean wall back. There'll be more Street Art to come, I'm sure. We have some of the best work in London in ED now. Cheers.
  20. Not so long ago there was a big building project going on on Crawthew Grove, on the elbow of the road and down a gap in the houses. According to what I heard someone was building a house on the old industrial site which had a basement with private cinema. If you went pass last year you would have seen the street lined with Portacabins and lorries taking away tons on earth from the massive excavation. There was a pit on the site about 20-30 feet deep, dug for the basement and steelwork holding the existing houses apart. People in the nearby house said how they had put up with months of disruption, now all is quiet and the building work has stopped; someone said that the house builders had run out of money. This must be the biggest 'Grand Designs' project in ED, but what will happens now? With all due respect to the house owners, I do have sympathy, but how do the neighbours feel about about the situation, does anyone know?
  21. Chelski37, Romanians, Romanians, Romanians, we hear so much about these people coming to our country. Years ago it used to be all the Paddies flooding in to Britain - the Irish immigrants like my father! Be careful what you say, these things can get out of hand. with respect.
  22. I've put a lot on the forum about this subject. Get used to it - it will never go away. I hate the noise, it messes up my life a lot and it's the worst it's been ever since I moved here 33 years ago. However, on the positive side, I did take up 'plane spotting a few years ago in the summer months and identified 98 airlines from 71 different countries - beat that! I also have a collection of around 200 extremely interesting photos of the aircraft and a smashing new anorak from St Christopher's charity shop. I suppose Vallium or similar drug could help. Cheers.

    The Patch

I see there's nothing on the menu for us crazy vegetarians who might want to splash out on a special meal. Nothing unusual about that, River Cafe have been doing it for decades now and many other top-end restaurants do the same. Ironic really, given that this place is going to have it's own vegetable garden? Enjoy your meals!
  24. I am sure that it is a very expensive area to rent now and I do feel sorry for anyone needing rented accommodation here. What I do notice is that nearly every newly built or refurbed flat of house soon has a 'To Let' sign outside. It seems that as soon as property becomes available along comes the 'Buy To Let' brigade ready to make a fast buck leaving first time buyers will little chance to get a place. I think that this is the case throughout most of the country and this government is unlikely to really do much to change the situation. Good luck joepud - welcome to 'New' East Dulwich.
  25. I have said before on the Forum that basically Heathrow is in the wrong place and the flights will nearly always have to make their final decents over us because of the wind direction. Sadly, that's it, but I did read in this week's free Finance News (available outside East Dulwich) station that in 1974 there was a proposal to build a new major airport in the Thames estuary which would have created many new jobs and would have established a new town of 600,000. Also, it would have meant that a big proportion of flights would have come in over the sea from the east, thus taking the pressure off of Heathrow and us, by now. Guess who strapped it, the idiot Labour government of the time. Other news in that paper was that at the City Airport they ARE starting to build another runway to increase flights. So, we will have many more of those twin prop light airliners whizzing over at tree-top level soon. Where are the emergency exits again? Cheers - more cheery news soon.
