Alywards, I stand corrected about the parks, fair comment. Just try to keep the queue for the ice cream van and cafe spaced out though. All the best, keep safe.

Yes, Peckham Rye and Dulwich parks still open after announcement this weekend that Southwark would close their parks. It's a shame for anyone that picks up the virus at either place (God forbid) that Southwark aren't taking thing's seriously enough when this borough has second highest number of people testing positive in Britain. It does need drastic measures at the moment, even if the sun is shining and all looks well with the world. Take care everyone and good health!

No; The Co-Op was The International Stores and Super Drug was Tesco's back in the 1980s. Hope that settles things.

KidKruger, Something like the mural in Bellenden Road. DulwichFox, Yes could be Bromley, I stand corrected , maybe? Doesn't change the quality of street art there though. Thanks for splitting those hairs, so helpful.

That seems a lot for the (mediocre) mural - ?10K! Can that be correct? If you want to see some great street art go down to Penge. Either they have some great artists there freely doing their thing or else Lewisham Council have a massive budget! The writing's on the wall!

Wish I had Instagram - could have had a chance to vote on the mural. I'm one of these old folks who've lived here nearly 40 years but just have a laptop and dumb 'phone. Seems a pointless piece of abstract work, could have shown part of local history maybe? Better than a blank wall though. The one in Bellenden Road is good - local history and figurative colourful work. But what do i know!?

Lynne, Good for you- well said, you are obviously someone that keeps up with what's going on it London! And good luck to The Artful Dodger, he's local and has been producing street art for many years! As for Dulwich Picture Gallery and all it's works, well it's a great place, but that's Dulwich Village not East Dulwich; we are supposed to have our own identity here. We still have the local historical mural on Goose Green about William Blake, though, more like these maybe? I rest my case.

Bony Fido, The mistake with the mural on the Lordship pub that Sue commented on has nothing to do with a Cherry Picker, I think that it might be about the artist's reputation from past works!? Nice to see a mural that not pompously based on classical paintings in Dulwich Picture Gallery - be good to have something referencing 20th Century art for a change. R. Mutt.

Yesterday, around 5am, we left a white B-Twin brand white/blue children's bike and a Sky blue and black helmet by the benches at the Peckham Rye Caf?. It was gone this morning and the park warden had not picked it up. It's a big, big longshot but has anyone seen it and picked it up for safe keeping? Text us on 07906 018240 if you have it. Thanks a lot.

It's just a sales gimmick like the Lego cards from Sainsbury's - get's children involved and wanting mum, dad and granny and grandad to spend money to get toys! Totally agree about more plastic too and some of the collectables are ready meals - not good, not good at all! Happy shopping!

Dulwich & Herne Hill Quiet Skies Campaign
i*Rate replied to SUT's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi Klove and skylorikeet, Nice to hear from a couple of people that feel the way I do about the aircraft noise. I've lived in London all my life but in ED since 1980 when it used to be quiet, then it all went wrong around the late 1990s. Have complained to Heathrow many times with specific views about why we should have to put up with the noise and seem to have no rights to silence. Sadly, or madly, rather the MP have agreed to the third runway at Heathrow, so now it will get much worse. I tried finding out how and where they would fly the extra 300 planes a day into Heathrow and got no answer. Who know we may have parallel flight paths over our head in the future!? Scary and depressing stuff! Cheers. -
What was Franklins called in the early 90s?
i*Rate replied to JEG1's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I remember it was a car tyre fitters before it was Franklins and the new cheese shop, next door, I think, was a charity shop where the two women working there used to smoke like chimneys. That was probably late 90s maybe. Mr Franklin originally had his restaurant in the Woolworth Road before he came to ED as someone already pointed out. Cheers. -
rendelharris, I stand corrected about the major's views on Heathrow; thank you for pointing that out. I did get it wrong there.
-
Yes, have just completed consultation online and it certainly ignores the fact that we have enough noise already! Also states that early morning flights start at 5.30 - no thay don't. I got woken at 4.30am one day and counted around ten flights overhead until just gone 5.00am. It also shows diagrams of how there could be parallel flight paths over us once there is another runway and two more holding areas over other parts of London with the flight of off them too. Many more London residents with additional noise misery if the third runway is built. Our mayor's in favour of it, so probably it will!? Cheers.
-
Caredelia, I asked Heathrow the question about the additional flight path for the third runway and no answer as I stated earlier. They only sent me details of how the area around the airport would be effected with no reference to areas like ours. What we could have are two parallel flight paths over us - think about that! Flights into Heathrow are supposed to increase from 400+ per day to 700+ per day.

Chthonic, Yes, it bothers me a bit too. They were selling prints of 'That Mural' in Dulwich Village in a pop-up shop a while ago and I must admit the penny didn't drop then. Unfortunately, Jeremy Corbyn didn't realize why it was painted out in the East End; a big political mistake for him, I think! Cheers
-
I did'nt get one of those leaflets, I wonder how many were distributed? I often complain about the aircraft noise ruining this area and always get polite and detailed responses, but when I enquired last year about how they would route the extra 300 flights a day into a third runway, answer got I none (as they say in Private Eye). Heathrow is one of those great British Cock-ups - a major airport (biggest in Europe) built on the wrong side of the capital city - and they ain't gonna move it! Fasten your seat belts and put your earplugs in!
-
Whoever owns the property have put in for planning permission to have a row of new terrace houses built there, probably waiting for funding or whatever it takes to get things done? Details are on the Southwark planning applications website.

rahrahrah, In answer to your enquiry about why access is free to over all over 60s, it's part on an idea to look after older people and keep them healthy. My class used to be a few pounds then they made it free to encourage more old folks in - and it did. It became so popular that they now have to put on an extra one. Yes, we've all heard talk about us well-off Baby Boomers with all our money and property, but there are actually people living on state pensions and still in rented accommodation, so having a chance to go to a 'Keep Fit' class for free means a lot to them. By the way - us Baby Boomers had to put up with rationing when we were kids, poor living conditions (no bathrooms or central heating), paying 33% tax in the 70's and getting made redundant in the 80's - so there!! There, I can feel that workout doing me good already.

Just had a look at the new pavement works at the top of Lordship Lane,Chener Books side, where it gets to Goose Green. Strange to see one pile of slightly used square paving stones being replaced with new ones and the kerb stones being replaced with slightly higher ones. Given that the council is broke - seems odd that money is being spent on cosmetic work to Lordship Lane. If you look over the road the pavement and kerbs are perfectly usable although paving has sunk a little. Wonder what's going on? Mind how you go in the icy weather!

Does anyone remember the 'one-legged' man who was sitting outside the Co-Op begging a while back? He also had a pitch at Sainsbury's car park, Dog Kennel Hill. He used to change legs when he got cramp so that he had two or else he would tuck one leg under him and put a bag in front so that you could not see it. I saw a young women get off her motorbike and come to talk to him in a very concerned way outside the Co-Op once on a Sunday morning. But my wife and I saw him a few times pushing his trolley around Sainsbury's doing his shopping so his 'bad leg' could'nt have been too bad. Anyway, live and let live, I don't really know if he was homeless of not so I cannot condemn the man. It was on the news recently about rough sleeping increasing - very sad. I'm sure Saint Theresa will sort it out. Cheers.
-
I can't believe this - it must be a joke?!! There are four-floor, four bedroom, brand new houses in ED on offer for ?1.5m in Upland Road. Mind you, they have been on since the summer and still empty.

It's what they call 'The Law of the Jungle' around here; just be very wary and streetwise. The only time I've seen police on the streets is sometimes on a Saturday morning when there about six police cars parked around the area and you see the officers queuing up at the cashpoint in Lordship Lane and in The Dulwich Cafe, next to the Parmisan, having brunch! What ever happened to 'Bobbies on bicycles, two by two' and Dixon of Dock Green - Ah - the good old days. It's a riot - are it was a few years ago!!
