Love Dulwich Bistro (New Cafe/Bistro) 89 Lordship Lane
i*Rate replied to Hakeem's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Another down-to-earth cafe with reasonable prices goes. I bet all the police officers and council workers miss it, I know my son and family used to love the full English breakfast when they came to visit us. But there are a couple of more places left - hey that's the glitzy world of ED! Cocktails all round! -
I think he second one of those houses in Shawbury Road, that has the elaborate garden shed, was bought for £1.2m not many years ago, It was being done up for a long time prior to that, I'm surprised how soon it's being sold on. I don't think you're going to get people staying put for for 40+ years like us any more but what a different world ED was in 1980 or in the 70s. That's life! Cheers to all - happy lofting!

Good Luck Rob and Alex! When me and my family managed to get our three bedroom house in ED in 1980 we had two children and my wife was pregnant with our second son. The house was semi derelict, wiring condemned, damp proof shot, roof needed fixing and so did most of the window frames. We got the upstairs wired and made ourselves at home upstairs with the front bedroom as kitchen/living room and the works begun, then we had snow and blizzards the following winter with no central heating! My recently retired carpenter father in law and I started by rebuilding the bathroom and then the rest of the jobs. Luckily we got grants from the council then, which helped, but having a full time job to pay the 11% interest mortgage I had to work weekends and holidays for about two years to finish everything. Well, now it was all worth it living in the heart of ED near the market but I'm still up a ladder this week at 76 years old to redecorate the front of the house again but it keeps me fit! -
Brendan C, I thought that I would give you my view about aircraft noise in ED; I've been here with my family since 1980 and it has got louder and louder. Some years ago I go so fed up with it that I wrote long letters to Boris, when he was mayor, then to Helen Hayes MP. It boils down to the fact that London airport was built on the wrong side of London and the flight path mostly used passes over most of the city. I get sick of the noise on a sunny day when I'm in the garden and have to come indoors for some peace and quiet before I get a headache. Unfortunately, money rules these days and we are only allowed a certain number of limited hours without the noise of aircraft flying over because it's all part of our economy and there's nothing that we can do about it. Cheers, fasten your seat belts.

Have just used Cut Above Tree Maintenance Ltd this week to have a tree removed and roots ground away. What a great job! Arrived on the dot of 9pm and got their lorry in place after supplying cones and a sign at the weekend. Worked virtually non-stop and efficiently to finish in the afternoon when they cleaned up the garden and hallway and put things back in place in the garden. Very polite, considerate people too. I did ensure hallway was lined with cardboard, though, to save damage and make the job easier for them.

I have been attending The Garden Surgery for nearly twenty years and generally the doctors have given me great service and support - in spite of having to go through THAT receptionist. I think that this is the same one as referred to here and she seems have been allowed to get away with it for years now. A proper complaint to the surgery administrator would be the best option; I made a complaint about a mess up that the doctors made with one of my prescriptions this winter and got a formal apology. I must say though that recently THAT receptionist called me Sir for the first time, so maybe she's being retrained? Sadly the wonderful Dr Cliffe has retired now, she was always there to give support in a thorough, mature way but now we have the 'new generation' but they are all good in their own way and I am grateful to all of them for the care. Cheers.

What a nerve that dog owner has to go to the stable and ask them to help get their dog trained! Always amazes me how dog owners decide to walk their dogs on the road when they have the entire park to go to and a special dog walking track which is very nice to walk along. Also, when I am cycling, why do they throw balls across the road in front of me for their dogs to chase, do they really want me to crash and break my neck? There certainly are some thoughtless/stupid people using the park and what a shame that we will not see the horses trotting around the park anymore, I have always enjoyed seeing them there for the past forty years since I move to ED. Condolences to the stable owner and riders and a big thank you for all the bags of manure I've had from them over the years. Cheers!

Jess_wm, Some years ago our dog got attached by another aggressive one on the Rye and I got bitten on the hand when I tried to separate them. I hope that you can sort this out and get compensation - we never did - not even a sincere apology, Now it would be easy to take photos on a mobile as evidence and that would be a good idea. Dog owners must take responsibility; I've know a well-behaved Ridgeback in the past - it's not the breeds to blame. Good Luck.

Fair enough JDolman, none of us want that sort of bad stuff going on around here, I'm sorry to get on my, class, high horse again - but.. my family has had trouble with disruptive noise problems ourselves. Some years ago the up-market house next door was rented by Acorn to three smart professional men, one of whom installed a full size D J system in his bedroom next door to ours and we had to endure nights of loud music coming through the party wall. It was useless calling in Southwark, it would have taken months to deal with it and, as for Acorn, they supported their tenants and made us feel like trouble makers! I just ended up having to use strong language to our neighbours. Yes, as strong as it gets from the son of and Irish labourer and a cleaner ( my mum was the cleaner by the way). Cheers.

The Guardian scheme is very good for people seeking cheap temporary, not so smart accommodation. My son lived in a ex NHS office block for a while paying rent and it really helped him out. There doesn't seem to be a Guardian board up on the old surgery so if the owners haven't put it up for rental then shame on them. As for drug taking and loud music at the parties there (like the one yesterday) it does give the Middle Class, well-heeled, professional, SE22 Magazine people of East Dulwich a taste of the earthy side of life! I rest my case.

Homophobic verbal attack by Veolia Bin Man
i*Rate replied to noahsdw's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
noahsdw, I was shocked when I read your post yesterday, the dustman always seem a decent lot of blokes and we live in a liberal, harmonious part of London - so I though. I do hope that the Police sort it out with Southwark Council. I worked for local government for many years and this kind of behaviour it totally unacceptable; that person must be found and reprimanded. Good luck and kind regards. -
There is a a very sickly looking fox around the gardens of Fellbrigg Road that might need help. It is an old vixen that has lost half of the fur from her body and must be suffering in the cold weather. She was quite energetic when we last saw her but if she is lying around in your garden then she will probably need to be taken away by the RSPCA, who will deal with foxes. She has had three cubs last year that are now fully grow and are still local. The number for the RSCPCA is ; 0300 1234999. Thanks very much.

I'm not surprised that's a pretty rough area around there - probably the local yobs having a go after too much Pimms! Cheery pip, happy Christmas.
