  1. America's support for South Korea against the communist north and Chinese influence had much to do with it's prosperity.
  2. 10,000 see funeral for 15-ton whale '...Incense was being burned for the creature, given the title Your Excellency, which died at sea and was brought ashore by fishermen in 10 boats...' http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23808810-funeral-for-15-ton-whale.do
  3. 'Wasteful' London council installs ?1,000 speed hump in a cul-de-sac Southwark being silly http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23808783-southwark-council-pays-pound-1000-for-speed-hump-in-cul-de-sac.do#readerComments
  4. Homo interneticus Noun Possibly the next evolved state of 'generation web' homo sapiens, who, having grown up with the internet's instant connections and access to information, may be undergoing changes to identity and the way they think. Cited by Dr. Aleks Krotoski, academic and journalist, in The Virual Revolution Part 4, Homo interneticus? (BBC2)
  5. Will the lycra-louts stick to a 20mph limit?
  6. Lycra-lout Noun. A derogatory term applied to the estimated 20% of cyclists who flout the highway code. Word coined on BBC London News this lunchtime.
  7. Oh well, in that case sign me up. One slight problem though is I drive a Prius so I can't stop at traffic lights or anywhere else for that matter.
  8. Ohhhh yeah, that's clever ... 30mph = 30 mins, 20 mph = 20 mins ... I like it, so if we reduce it to 3 mph we'll arrive before we set off
  9. No, ridiculous idea dreamt up by some quango with a hidden agenda of social control and oppressing the masses. Also, be quicker to travel on roller skates
  10. Magpie said: "...However, lets be clear that no single member of the EU is happy to sacrifice its national interests for the common good - see the current fiasco in Greece. Therefore, a realistic view should be taken to the EU - ie we should accept what suits, and ignore/reject what doesn't, as every other country in the EU does!..." I'm not sure it's that simple Magpie. In fact the whole concept of a supranational body is that the individual members delegate their sovereignty (ie, national interests) for the greater good of the whole. You can't cherry pick. That in itself does not make the EU some evil monster.
  11. Rolf Harris was a bit like that
  12. Royal astronomer: 'Aliens may be staring us in the face' ... ?They could be staring us in the face and we just don?t recognise them. The problem is that we?re looking for something very much like us, assuming that they at least have something like the same mathematics and technology,? he said... http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/space/7289507/Royal-astronomer-Aliens-may-be-staring-us-in-the-face.html
  13. Yes, it's been around for a while now but very impressive and quite moving. I've noticed these sand drawings have been appearing in adverts over the past months so it's caught the imagination

Objectively Sean, no, it can't be both. As govt policy it's above board and hence not a conspiracy. Agreed. Yes, getting people out of cars is good for many reasons, not least it frees up the road for me so I can put my foot down as long as Huguenot and is mate ruffers get that bloody tandem out of the way.
  15. Huguenot wrote: "Besides, if it's a conspiracy, what's the real desired outcome?" Err ... to get cars off the roads and more people onto public transport. Government policy I believe. (PS Silver vixen quite likes me in mink)

Huguenot Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > That's why I give you such short shrift Silverfox, > because you make silly assumptions based on gut > feel. > > For some idiotic reason you think that there's > 'the man' somewhere who's reducing the speed limit > just to piss you off? Posted by: ruffers Today, 12:45AM Huguenot speaks the truth. Now, Huguenot and his mate ruffers would have us believe that traffic spped reductions to a level slower than a horse and cart laden with coal and ore on a turnpike road during the industrial revolution actually speeds up our journeys - that is after we've waitied five minutes at each of 20 sets of traffic lights. ruffers thinks this is a truism. On the contrary, I, and most right thinking people, know that that is what they want us to think. Unable to trust their own senses, thinking the car's rolling backwards as you see a granny with a trolley overtaking you, oblivious to the fact that recreational joggers doing a paced 8 miles an hour arrive at your destination half an our before you do, they persist in their quasi-religious belief. We have to stand up to such nonesense. Why? Because if we don't next we'll have the the likes of Huguenot and ruffers claiming it's their human rights to ride a tandem in the fast lane of the M1 from London to Glasgow and beyond and hey, if it slows you down it actually speeds you up - counter-intuitive like.
  17. "Traffic speed reductions actually speed up your journey, but it's counter-intuitive." There's one born every minute ...
  18. Most traffic is stationary on motorways because some idiot puts messages on the signs to slow down to 50, 40, 30 etc when there's no apparent reason. There is a cause. Everything happens for a reason.

  20. Maybe Europe did play some part in the peace process. To me, 9/11 sorted it. When Bush said there's no hiding place for terrorists the game was up. No more fund raising in New York and Chicago etc. Peace followed very quickly thereafter. I'm not sure there was any road to Damascus change of mind where the Irish suddenly found themselves to be europeans. except for a few chattering classes liberals. As far as I can see a few people grabbed the money and became very rich, later topping themselves when they realised the emperor didn't have any clothes and the rest took the EEC grants while their farms remained idle. The celtic tiger was really a kitten being weaned in a cage of the EU zoo.
  21. eusebiovic, in principal I would support your cause but I've never heard of this place nor anyone ever speak of it. How often does it show films in between being a bingo hall?
  22. Easties EL - why do you insult our intelligence? Have you actually had the good manners to view and listen to the clip you've posted? Your cut 'n' paste post promises much, but the 10 seconds of Hitchen's words leave us in the dark.
  23. I understand Newsnight will be doing a feature interviewing self-confessed 'assisters' or 'murderers' tonight which may be worth recording. Perhaps it's more widespread than we think.
