small tattoos are a waste of time. it looks crap when you see someone and think they've got a dirty mark on their ankle/shoulder and then get closer to realise it's a tattoo! I've got one that is an abstract design of a dancing deer. I got the design from a National Geographic magazine that ran an article on a 4000 yr old priestess found preserved in Siberia. She had the design tattooed on her. I love it as it is unusual and original. It's not the usual colour and is quite big yet discreet. It's very important to get a good artist. Knowing the best place to position a tattoo with the curves of muscle etc is a skill. I always thought Paula Yates's tattoo on her arm was done in the wrong place.
