  1. You still have Poundland.
  2. Schools are probably the biggest attraction of East Dulwich - outstanding state schools and prestigious private schools.
  3. The Vale ? Google StreetView from 2008 https://maps.app.goo.gl/M6ke5BmgvyAMWVAy7?g_st=ac
  4. Google Street view has this amazing feature where you can go back in time so you can explore ED in ancient times....well not earlier than 2008.. :)...but it still interesting to see how much LL has changed. https://www.google.com/maps/@51.4562629,-0.0760271,3a,75y,286.56h,90t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sAquCD-EiJqJD2FhRJ0alNQ!2e0!5s20080601T000000!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu&g_ep=EgoyMDI0MDkxNS4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D
  5. The reality is that private education also helps reduce the burden on state schools. I think it's a bit unfair that families paying for private schools should be penalised as they already are paying towards state education via their taxes. Whats the government is doing with vat increase is to make private education even more elitist. And for people who call for a ban private of education, using the same logic we should also ban private healthcare.
  6. I’m convinced that East Dulwich is one of London’s best areas...nice parks, top-notch schools, and absence of high-rise buildings...etc.. The only downside is a few grumpy people who criticise newcomers and complain about gentrification - while enjoying its perks.
  7. I guess that's the plan. Families who can't afford anymore will move their children to state schools. Hopefully, the government will provide additional spaces and recruit more teachers to meet the increased demand.
  8. The VAT increase will only make private education more exclusive - many dual-income families who prioritise their children's education over material possessions will either struggle or to move them to state schools thus taking some school places. What a poor decision by this government.
  9. I wouldn't recommend Forest Hill if you have a child in one of the Dulwich private schools and you intend to cycle. ..that hill is very steep. In my opinion the ideal locations would be around Court Lane/near library - I used to cycle across Dulwich Park with my little one to go to one of these schools - when I used to live there. Houses might be on the smaller side. around North Dulwich/Herne Hill great transport link to the City and you are also close to Brockwell Park or West Dulwich (not the most exciting area but very quiet and very convenient for DP, pre Prep and DC.) Nice houses as well.
  10. Exactly - the winning combination of living in boring East Dulwich and being at a walking distance from the Peckham Rye lane area. I will certainly try these new places.
  11. Selective licensing has been extended in Southwark ( it already exists in most of East Dulwich) From 1 November 2023, you will need to apply for a licence if you let your property privately, it is not an HMO and it is in one of the following wards: North Walworth Nunhead & Queens Road Old Kent Road Peckham Camberwell Green Chaucer Dulwich Hill Dulwich Wood London Bridge & West Bermondsey Peckham Rye Rotherhithe Rye Lane South Bermondsey Surrey Docks Great timing for landlords! 😁
  12. Quite impressive what they've done with Guinness 0.0.....I only know cans but it really tastes like Guinness.
  13. ...I feel East Dulwich is slightly losing of its character...oh well...
  14. Not much to add from what has been mentioned but The Blue Brick café would make a nice picture. Talking about blue, a collection of the blue plaques in ED : Enid Blyton, CS Forester, Boris Karloff, Bon Scott from AC/DC..
  15. Boomers suggesting that cutting out expensive coffee and avocado toast will solve financial struggles is such a laughable cliché...
  16. Sure. Moaners should contemplate relocating. While some people are struggling with bills, rents and mortgage payment it doesn't mean they have to deny themselves a little bit of luxury...for the same price I think some would prefer a latte to 2 multi packs of Hulla Hoops. Each to their own, I guess...
  17. I wonder if the self identified working class heroes who have benefited from the gentrification of ED through the skyrocketing property prices (and who are boasting in forums) understand that many of the younger generation of "yuppies" and other speciality coffee drinkers are also struggling financially with high expenses like insane rents and childcare costs... While some may find Monster Munch and Pot Noodles to be enjoyable dinner options, I personally would prefer to have access to fresh and affordable food.
  18. Why do some individuals so determined to turn the arrival of a shop into a class war ? Where are all these elusive "oat latte drinkers" protesting outside Poundland? The truth is the shop is rubbish at providing affordable healthy food - yes you may save few pounds a month on toothpaste and window cleaner but this is not going to ease the cost of of living. In fact, it is likely to exacerbate the diabetes epidemic that disproportionately affects people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. An Aldi or a Lidl would have been much better tbh (probably too small).
  19. Unlike all the major supermarkets Just look at the amount of sodas and crisps that sainsbury have on sale , but that's OK?? I have to admit after visiting the store I have changed my mind. I was impressed with the large selection of Haribo and Werther's Originals and also by the colourful variety of multipack crisps that was on display. Lack of fresh food was a bonus (less cooking). The cherry on top was the section for smokers : ashtrays, rizla, lighters, .etc..5 min walk from the local schools...what s not to like...eh?
  20. is there really demand for nasty cheap plastic tats, sugary drinks and big bag of snacks ?
  21. It's quite disheartening to see a Poundland opens in East Dulwich to be honest. Every time I've been to one of these stores, all they seem to have on offer in term of food are unhealthy snacks, like confectionary, sodas and crisps. really don't see any cause for celebration.
  22. If you can afford to buy in ED I would definitely recommend - 10 years ago we also moved with a baby and we are still loving it - sure you can buy a larger property further away in Bromley, Sevenoaks etc... in a more suburban area but to echo some earlier post and as you probably know the demographics is a bit different. It really depends what you are looking for. With 2 parks, a great community feel, a nearby child friendly museum (Horniman) and good schools... to be honest I don't see where in South London you could find a better place for a young family - maybe i'm biased but I lived in many places from Greenwich to Clapham. Sydenham, Forest Hill and Crystal Palace are also worth considering imo.
