Where can I buy a little life backpack in / near ED?
alieh replied to Norfolkvillas's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, I've seen them in there this week. -
We had the same, usually related to teeth. There were lots of them around that age. He doesn't settle well in our bed either so we had a little mattress and sleeping bag in his room and would sleep in there during bad patches. We seemed to be able to avoid those prolonged awake periods by doing this because we could settle him much quicker as soon as he stirred. We never really had to sleep with him for more than a few nights at a time, but if yours is a more long term problem you could do a sort of gradual withdrawal approach over time. If you suspect teeth you could try some ibuprofen at bedtime one night to see if that gets a better night. At least then you would know that teeth are the underlying problem and that it will pass!

Anything you can do about an early waking toddler?
alieh replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yes, we definitely have the easy bedtime/early start situation, which has its benefits especially after a long day! My son had a natural 6:30/7:00 bedtime since birth basically, and has always slept better when he goes down early. These days we can usually get away with 7:30, but if it's been a bad nap day I still need to revert to 7:00 or else I get hit with a 5:00 am overtired wake up. If you've been worn down with enough 5 am starts like we were, anything after 6:00 will seem like bliss. So if you have a 7:00 pm bedtime and get 11 hours, that might be as good as it gets for a while! Also should have said that teething always brings us back to 5:00 am, and the teeth that came from 12-18 months (molars and canines) were the worst of the bunch. -

Would you be willing to brave the thought of an earlier bedtime? Like 7:00 or even 6:30, just to see if you can break the pattern? My thinking with the early bedtimes was always to try to get as much sleep as possible in him, and sometimes we would get lucky with a later wake up from an earlier bedtime. Will she go down any earlier for that PM nap? Things might get better when she drops the morning nap, but she is very young to be doing that already. Also make sure there are no distractions in her room - literally the light from the baby monitor was enough to convince my son that he was ready to get up at 4:45. I do think it is probably just an unfortunate phase, but you can still try a few more things just to feel like you are doing something at a minimum! We still get the 5 am starts here whenever my son goes to bed overtired (he's over 2 now!), but they are quite rare. Maybe a few a month. -
I wish I could join you! Last two days of work here...if you're still mobile next week, I would be keen.

Also, if the hotel can't arrange babysitting we've used the Sitters agency (sitters.co.uk) before in hotels and it has always worked out really well. Generally I have just snuck out from the wedding to put my son to bed, and then the sitter is there while he is sleeping and can ring when/if he wakes (and in your case when it's time for a feed). Given that you're going to be in the same building, it does seem like a lot of extra cost and hassle to bring your nanny all the way there just for a few hours!

Does anyone have an ABC Adventure Buggy I could look at?
alieh replied to alieh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I ended up ordering one direct from New Zealand sight unseen - it is due to arrive on Monday! But thank you both for your offers! -
Thanks nunheadmum. I'll ask for more details about the mobile monitoring and update the thread, in case it is useful for anyone else. I feel lucky to have a midwife (Lanes) who is very supportive of VBAC, active birth, etc. so I haven't been thinking too much about the details. But maybe that will change after we meet to discuss in more detail on Monday!

I also just had a flashback remembering how much I loved this book around that age: http://www.amazon.com/Banner-Sky-James-Ramsey-Ullman/dp/0064470482

Something a bit different, but I loved Gordon Korman (Canadian) around that age. It appears that he has written tons since I last read him (back in the early 80s) and I don't know anything about his new stuff, but from the list at the attached link I remember the MacDonald Hall series and lots of the older books in the "Novels" section, especially "No Coins Please": http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/k/gordon-korman/

Not sure if this is true, but I heard that Kings had mobile monitoring technology that can be used even in water? Must not be true if none of you experience VBACers have heard of it. Unless it is very new? I have my birth talk on Monday so will ask my midwife then. Interestingly, I am also 36 weeks with #2 after a section for #1 (breech) and there has been no talk of my having to see a consultant to hear about risks, etc. Maybe she will tell me that on Monday?

littleEDfamily, thanks for the tip re: the made to measure mattresses. I need a new one for our Amby hammock (weird size) and just ordered from there. Good price too!

Just to revive this thread. After posting towards the beginning to say that my son had never had a problem with Pampers Baby Dry, we used a new pack before Xmas - it was Pampers Baby Dry but said "Extra Absorbing Zones" and the nappies were thinner than the usual ones and had little orange spots all over them. Well, my son developed hideous chemical burns from the nappies after using just 1 or max 2 from the package! He was screaming and crying that his bottom hurt and when we went to change him there were a number of patches about the size of a 2 p coin that were like open sores oozing clear liquid. Terrible. There are still scars there over a month later. I just spoke to Pampers and they immediately suggested that I bin the bag of nappies and they are sending out a cheque to reimburse the cost of the nappies (plus a little bit more) so I suspect they are becoming accustomed to these calls. Just to remind people to make sure they complain to Pampers if they have a similar problem. Hopefully they have now pulled the offending product off the shelves; I bought this pack quite a while before using them (maybe November sometime) so it may be that the new packages are fine. I had been meaning to go back to cloth nappies for ages and this was just the impetus I needed!
