  1. What's the Peckham Plan? Sounds sinister.
  2. L, food was very good. Took a bit of time to come but well worth the wait. Dad's brisket tender and moist, mum's salmon pie really flavoursome and my pork belly delicious. Hope your meal went well and that your folks enjoyed.
  3. Uh forgive me but am I hopelessly naive? I returned earlier from a mothers day lunch with severely visually impaired mum and somewhat arthritic dad. Having trolled the Lane for a seeming eternity ( no, like a bad son I hadn't booked anywhere)we eventually settled on the Bishop. I was against it, thinking it too young and buzzy for a middle aged duffer such as myself and his parents. My folks over ruled me and we went in. No appropriate seating was immediately available, so we decided to try elsewhere. But as we made to leave, two separate parties offered to give up their seats for us...we took up one of these offers. Trivial and simple actions, to be sure, but full of humanity and kindness. And, it seemed to me, full of a kind of "Spirit of ED " - the very thing that helps make this one London's nicest 'hoods. So my question is this... is ED really a happy place with lots of people making lives with their loved ones - and extending common courtesy and kindness to others? Not in a la-di-da, let;s all hold hands together, sort of way. But rather in the sense of ordinary folk living ordinary lives, reaching out on to one another, on occasion, with humour, kindness and fellow-feeling. Or am i just naive?
  4. The laws of contempt of court mean nothing can published that prejudices a fair trial. A vigilant defence brief could use published comments to wreck proceedings. Well done snorks - a lawyer, perchance?
  5. What's happened to the Oglander? Closed or reinvening itself?
  6. If you wanted to do a more permanent thing I notice that Osbourne Stewart has moved out of its offices near Goose Green- which now lie empty.

Hadnt been to BR for ages and am glad to hear you are thriving. Love the 'hood.
  8. Hey, am I late with this? But Stringer and Mculty arent the only Brits. Mayor Carcetti is also a son of Albion. He was the main dude in that show from a few years back, Queer as Folk. Just found that out at a dinner party I just returned from (hence weird time of slightly drunken post).
  9. H, bruv, you have GOT to relax. You'll give yourself a hernia! You sound like a person of principle - which in itself really deserves respect. But try to not to vilify and insult anyone who disagrees with you or has the temerity to make different choices. It detracts from the cogency of your argument - and there's a danger people will stop listening. I am a car owner and don;t use it as an ego cructh etc. Most people don;t - it's just a means of getting around to see mates do shopping, visit relatives etc. And as for my little Peugeot being a means of self-actualisation - well what does that even MEAN FFS? It's a car, not a freaking philosphical code! I would love to use public transport more - but sometimes it just aint practical. Anyway - i gather you are posting from overeas? Whereabouts?
  10. Dear old Hueguenot! Ok you win. Just outline the location of the Permitted Retail Zone, and I will happily comply with all future shopping directives. Also,to cut down on unathorised travel, please outline the location of any putative Permitted Friendship Zone you may be thinking of. I confess to having friends and relatives over a subversively wide area - and need the discipline of making new friends in the PFZ. .Thankfully I don;t have to travel with toddlers - though I appreciate the plight of those who do. It's called empathy. SMG: Fair point about travelling to the West End. But the Congestion zone extends way beyond the west end. And anyone wishing to traverse the the capital ( pending authorisation from H!) often has to cross through the zone - or take a massive detour. That affects the social links H refers to. Not a big deal perhaps, but worth bearing in mind. Right, I'm off to fire up the Hummer! Pip pip!
  11. Huguenot, stick to de-caff! As an intellectual midget, I would merely argue that public transport is not always the best option for everyone. Taking two buses, burdened with three bags of shopping a stroller and a toddler may not suit everyone. Their choice to take the car should not be diminished - no matter how cross it makes intellectual giants. Jeremy + TLS: I'm not aware of any studies showing the stats on car ownership amongst the poor and the journeys they choose to make. Am I wrong? Ted Max:I am shocked at the appalling showing by the Italians. Where are they? Moos: Yes, I'm a bloke. You were obviously picking up on my sensitive feminine side
  12. Hey TLS - less of the ageing please!
  13. Uh, perhaps it's because the "congestion" charge is a nakedly money-grabbing illegitimate scam imposed by the former mayor. Bring on its demise. Soon. And before the inevitable onslaught, I am not some mad right wing ideologue intent on burning the planet to a crisp. Just an ordinary bloke who has the crazy subversive idea that people should be able to travel where they please in their own city, without having to pay some bogus tax. Forgive the thought-crime.
  14. Hey Steveo, any tips for tomorrow's 3.30 at Wincanton?
  15. Was strolling around the Bellenden area for the first time in ages and noticed several agreeable looking shop fronts - a cholatier, wholefood shop etc. Nice villagey vibe - even better, dare I suggest, than that in ED. Only trouble was, none of these shops were actually open. Ok it was around 5pm - but still! Couldnt work out whether they were new businesses on the verge of opening for trade or established businesses foundering on the rocks of recession. My question is, is Bellenden just taking off , or just about to crash?
  16. Ruffers, any idea when the McD gym is opening. I am currently schlepping to Virgin Active in Streatham, which aint easy. DD there is also a gym on St Davids Road in FHill just across the south circular from the BR station.
  17. I've seen him a couple of times shopping at Sainsbury Dog Kennel Hill.
  18. Oh, yeah...James Nesbitt is the "dark-haired irish guy". I guess everyone has seen him. But also see Victoria Cross soldier honoured for saving colleagues in Afghanistan shopping in Sainsbury.Think his name is Behari.
  19. Ex girlfriend saw the new dark haired dude from Spooks in one of those boutiques in Dulwich Village. I got a very irritated look off the black haired Irish guy from Cold Feet and Jekyll Hyde and countless ads, who was sitting texting on a bench outside the Bishop. Also look out for BBC's middle east corr Jeremy Bowen who I spotted on North Cross Road perusing the market.
  20. Uh, sorry, but modern Snow Patrol is really good -at least to these codgerish ears. Ok, naive, but gets at a certain unvarnished truth emotional truth. Is it hopelessly naff to like Kings of Leon? That guy's voice is deeply special - and vibes on that rarest of things - honestly expressed male passion and vulnerability. Paper Planes by MIA is this wonky/skanky celebration of sudden-death sink estate culture.Scary but compelling and ridiculously catchy. Weirdly featured in Slumdog. Anyone know Schnauss? Modern German bloke who's electronica is a kind of blissed out exploration of mood and theme. Ok, end of wank-a-thon. Pip pip!
  21. TM you are a faking genie arse. Are you published? Do tell.
  22. My step daughter was out her mum and aunt one summer afternoon. Step daughter was very excied to tell me about the pimps mum+ aunt had sampled at a pub. She meant Pimms. I think.
  23. Kros + FN +CoD don't sweat Dulwich Fairy's dimwit outburst. His regurgitation of half digested Daily Mail headlines is a matter of small consequence. Marmora's senatorial discourse, on the other hand, is a sobering and healthy corrective much more in keeping with the ED vibe and the zeitgeist. Respeck.
