  1. Not wishing to claim any of the credit or anything, but I wonder if the germ of the idea came from here... http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,895381,923541#msg-923541
  2. Nice to see the EDT is committed to showing live Ashes through the summer.
  3. The mysterious New Hope Christian School on East Dulwich Grove seems to have closed after five years. Now being advertised as a 'childcare facility to rent' http://www.rightmove.co.uk/commercial-property-to-let/property-36267784.html

  6. Pugwash, what is the EDS thinking of doing with the ?5000 it appears to have in its bank account? I can remember the Society being quite active in the late 1980s and early 90s, campaigning on behalf of Lordship Lane against Sainsbury's for example, but what initiatives has the society taken in the last 10 years? Or has the Community Council and the East Dulwich Forum really taken over the role once played by the EDS?
  7. There have been few changes to Lordship Lane so time to update this thread, please feel free to make corrections and fill in the gaps, I'm sure I've missed a few.
  8. Just imagine if that space was made available to park (say) 100 cars. Then in two years time the car park is closed as building work starts. Suddenly 100+ people who have become used to parking close to the station in East Dulwich and regard it as a right can't do so. For a while they'll therefore be looking to park in whatever other spaces they can find in the area. Everyone will be unhappier than they are at the moment.
  9. Clearly East Dulwich needs more primary places now. However by the time a new school has been approved and built (5 years?) the child population bulge may be among 11/12 year olds, so planning ahead is it in fact a secondary rather than primary school that we need? Even if we do get a new primary school, where will those extra children go to secondary school? For those new to the area, East Dulwich had a primary school on North Cross Road which closed in the 1990s to become flats, I think partly because it was under-subscribed. And until 5 years ago, Heber school was seriously under-subscribed. Big fluctuations in numbers of children in a neighbourhood are normal. Can James or anyone else tell us what the birth rate in SE22 was in each of the last 5 years? Is it still going up?
  10. [oops, didn't see the previous post, some duplication here..] sorry to hear it's closing, but it's only been a matter of time. Wouldn't surprise me if this is going to be redeveloped as flats. I remember a couple of years ago there was even talk of turning that site into a new library with flats, though that idea was probably shelved.
  11. Sorry not to be adding to the list of moaners on here, but the new service actually looks ok to me, despite the fact that I have been a longstanding fan of the South London line. I reckon that on balance almost as many people will gain as will lose from the changes. Doom mongers who claimed it's 25 minutes plus to Clapham should look at the timetables again. It's 20 minutes max from Peckham Rye to Clapham Junction (16 minutes from Denmark Hill) and in the reverse direction the journey is actually only 15 or 16 minutes from Clapham to Peckham Rye. The main loss is the service from Denmark Hill to London Bridge direct - now you have to change at Peckham Rye. As for Denmark Hill/Peckham Rye to Victoria - yes we're losing two trains per hour, but the way the trains have been scheduled in recent years, the slow and fast trains were always scheduled quite close to each other anyway (both ways) so it wasn't much different from two trains per hour. And the revamped Denmark Hill station with lifts and ramps, which has come as part of the package, will be great for those with buggies etc.

Is the plan for this to be mainly a residential development, with a small police station tucked in there somewhere?
  13. I can't make next Tuesday's meeting, but I hope somebody on EDF can go along, and report back with edited highlights of news on the police station and hospital site. Regarding the hospital site, I know that a primary school is one suggestion, but won't this be a bit late - especially as it will be several years before it could be built. The baby boom in SE22 has probably peaked, and what we're likely to need in 5-10 years time is a secondary school to cope with the bulge that is currently working its way up the existing primaries. rch Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > The next Dulwich Community Council meeting will be > held next Tuesday Sept 18th at the Dulwich > Library, beginning at precisely 7pm. > > The Southwark Police Borough Commander, Charles > Griggs, will attend from 7pm until 7.30pm to > update us on the future of our local police > services and the fate of the East Dulwich Police > Station. > > The second half of the meeting will include a > presentation by NHS managers about the Dulwich > Hospital site consultation, with an opportunity > for us to begin to express our views. 14. Just to flag that in a separate thread, the cinema-sized Thomas More Hall on Lordship Lane is asking for suggestions for how the venue might be used in future. Hmm, let me think, any ideas?
  15. Judging by the popularity of another thread, there seems to be a vast untapped demand for a cinema in the area...

  17. Just for clarification, it's been said that there are about 50 schools that are within a couple of miles of where this incident took place. Can somebody please list any other schools that sent out an urgent warning message to parents to report this "attempted abduction". If it turns out that other schools (who knows, maybe 49 of them) didn't send out an urgent message on the day, should we be labelling all those schools as irresponsible for not having alerted all their parents about this dangerous incident? Or should we be pleased that they had a "proportionate" response?
  18. I've made some updates to this thread.
  19. See this old thread about the changing face of Lordship Lane over recent years.
  20. Love the idea, would definitely use it, and with the growing number of teenagers in the area, it could become a destination for them too. Dread to think what the cost of a lease would be, or the conversion costs. But good luck.
  21. Just discovered this old thread. What happens at the Constitutional Club? How does it survive? Who are its members and where do they live? So many questions... I'm going to speculate that whoever they are, they have an ageing and declining membership (institutions like that often do), and are a time capsule of an old East Dulwich that is fast fading away. Am I right? If so, it can't go on forever, and will have to be reinvented at some point to reflect the change in the surrounding community. It would be a great place for a local independent cinema. Just a thought.
  22. Surely by the time this site is developed it won't be a primary school the area needs, it will be a secondary school. Retirement apartments/sheltered housing would also be a good idea given that the area's population will be ageing - people used to move on from East Dulwich when they had kids, now I sense that many parents want to stay in the area for life.
  23. I think there might still have been another greengrocer as well as Smiths back in 1994. And there were two or more butchers at the lower end as well, but these may have folded in the late 80s. Sainsburys arrival in 1993(?) certainly did for a few shops on Lordship Lane.
  24. What shop was there before Just Williams took over?
  25. Thank you for this update, I'm very sorry to hear this news, he was my dentist for 20 years and I was always very relaxed with him. Very sad that he should die before having a chance to enjoy retirement.
