  1. Don't be put off Forest Hill Road by this thread - it's still a good GP practice. There are several sections in the report that are headed 'inadequate', but if you read the summaries you'll see that most of what the practice does is good. I've had two recent visits to the surgery, and I was happy with the professionalism and care both times. The biggest problem is how long it takes to get an appointment, but frankly that's the situation in many GP surgeries across the UK because of the immense pressures on a sector that has been starved of resources.
  2. This is an utter disaster. Cars on Calton Avenue supposedly have right of way, but in practice cars coming over from Turney Road and heading up Court Lane regard that right turn as the right of way (as it used to be), cutting across in front of the line of cars on Calton Avenue who seem to let them go. It's in desperate need of some signage and clear road markings. What a fiasco.
  3. I am so sad to hear Dr McColl has passed away. She was my GP for twenty years and I always found her knowledgable, caring and pragmatic. It's important that we recognise professionals who deliver great service to the community without any fuss or fanfare.
  4. Is this related to the new Harris school? Parking seems to have increased during the day. Maybe there are 20 staff working at that school now, and a few of them probably drive. Five cars would fill one side of the stretch between Colwell and Lordship Lane (or an equivalent segment on Pellatt). When that school is full it will have twice as many staff, so if staff are parking nearby, the problem will only increase. Lots of skips etc too. Builders can easily take out two parking spaces for weeks at a time.
  5. How many Grand Designs houses are there in East Dulwich now? I make it at least three: this one, the timber & glass houses tucked in behind Landells Road, and as I recall, a corrugated roof one somewhere around Bawdale Road. There's also that very long thin house in Peckham. Any others?
  6. Have they published the final plans anywhere? Did the people's campaign for roundabouts instead of traffic lights have any impact?
  7. The Brian Green walk was part of the Dulwich Festival in May. Best place to find out about future walks is probably to ask the Dulwich Society...or ask Brian himself, he owns the stationery/art shop in Dulwich village.
  8. I was on a bus up Dog Kennel Hill the other day and noticed that all the stretcher railings appeared to have been removed. Is it too late to save them? It's only a few weeks since I first had them pointed out to me, on Brian Green's local WW2 walk.
  9. Many years ago (late 90s?) there was a place in Clapham called "French Tarts" which did really good takeaways/deliveries, but went out of business. This looks similar, so I wonder if they re-started the business under a new name.
  10. > It could well be that there are more properties > now because now it takes longer to sell. > For example, you could even have (I'm making these > numbers up) 700 properties marketed in 2015, with > an avg of 150 on sale at any given time, and, say, > 500 marketed in 2017, with an avg of 300 on sale > at any given moment. Fair point, but I think the high number of properties on Rightmove is an indication that this is more of a buyers' market. With all that choice, buyers are able to make low bids - and there will be the occasional vendor who is desperate to sell and will accept. Wouldn't be surprised if a year from now we see prices 5% lower than they are now.

There seem to > be fewer properties in the market compared to, > say, 3 years ago, and it tends to take longer to > sell Sales volumes might have gone down, but the number of properties on the market has rocketed. In 2015 there were typically about 180 listed as for sale in SE22 on Rightmove. The current figure is 330, close to the highest I can remember it being.
  12. Very active robins and great tits in the garden for the last fortnight. Anyone know where I can buy bird seed locally (don't want to trek to Sainsburys if I can avoid it).
  13. I've had landline problems since yesterday, BT just sorted one line but the other not yet working. Melbourne Grove area.
  14. How are the buses from Lordship Lane up to Denmark Hill now? I need to get to DH station this evening.
  15. Dear Admin, please send this thread to the Lounge where it belongs.
  16. I love the Picturehouse, the cafe and the people who work there. It's my favourite thing in East Dulwich. I will not be boycotting it, but I'll make sure my tips continue to be generous.
  17. I wonder if once these things go solo some antisocial members of the public will start to 'bully' these devices for a bit of a laugh (by standing in their way etc).
  18. Mick Mac Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > 7 years Reg, and that's the best you can come up > with? I drafted and re-drafted that post so many times over the years until today I thought - yes, that's the wording I'm happy with. Anyway, about that window: is it still there?
  19. There used to be a stained glass window of Stoke City FC in Nick Hancock's old house on Underhill Road. Anyone know if it's still there? (I don't know which number, but I think it was at the top of the hill)
  20. Somebody please explain, why does this American political journalist/broadcaster Keith Olbermann have Dulwich Hamlet listed in his profile? Is he the most followed Dulwich Hamlet FC supporter on the planet?
  21. Parkhill Properties now own quite a few of the buildings on Lordship Lane. They started buying up shops and flats in the mid 90s, I think. I don't like the way that the shops who have made Lordship Lane successful and vibrant are penalised for the success they've generated by having huge rent increases. Having said that, the landlord can only charge what retailers are prepared to pay.
  22. OK, this makes a change from police sirens and the other common night time disturbances in East Dulwich. For the last few nights I've become aware of birdsong at night. On Sunday it was around 11pm as I went to bed. Since then, it's started at around 3am, with two birds exchanging varied, mellifluous chirps for about 15 minutes (and then, intermittently for the next hour). One of the birds is very close, maybe on our roof. Birdsong is generally a lovely sound to wake up to, but I have to say it isn't quite so appealing when it wakes you at 3am. I've lived in East Dulwich for years and can't remember this ever happening before. A quick search on the Web suggests it might be robins, which are apparently easily triggered to wake by artificial light. But why's it just started happening? Nothing's changed in the lighting around here. Can anyone shed any light (no pun intended) on this mystery?
  23. In April according to Rightmove there were 220 properties on the market in SE22. The number is now 320. For the first time in a while, maybe supply is out-stripping demand.
  24. I've made lots of updates to the list (see opening post on the thread) but still a few gaps to fill.
  25. Here's the old thread which starts with how LL looked around 1994 http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,334459
