Where would you like a new bench in Goose Green ward?
jamesmcash replied to jamesmcash's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi all I just went away and made a similar map to ianr but he beat me to it! We?ve got a few ideas for places but I would rather hear from everyone else at this stage. And dbboy - yes we could probably do more if there was sufficient demand for them. Of course, they don?t come for free so there is always a trade off with these things. Best wishes James -
Dear all Last year my fellow Labour councillor for Goose Green, Charlie Smith, put in a bid to fund three public benches in East Dulwich. These seem to have been popular and well-received so we are going to put in three more. It?s not a totally open question because there are some safety requirements we have to adhere to (the pavement needs to be quite wide for instance) but in general we want to allocate place them wherever they are most wanted. This might be somewhere that provides less mobile pedestrians with a place to rest, or perhaps somewhere where people like to mingle. Or perhaps somewhere with an entirely different reason. So, where would you like a new bench to be placed in Goose Green ward? Either respond on here or email me directly on [email protected] Best wishes James

Hi all The frequency of collection depends on whether food waste recycling is carried out. In those places where this does happen, food (and garden) waste is still collected weekly, dry recycling and other waste is collected fortnightly. This reduction is to encourage appropriate recycling ? where food recycling is taking place it is preferable that people are trying to recycle food waste rather than putting it into their non-recycling bin. There is still weekly collection (or more frequent for some communal bins) for other areas. I would have thought that smells would come mainly from food and/or garden waste so this should already be collected weekly. If this approach is not being followed, or if it is clearly inadequate, then please let me know. This tool might be useful too, it tells you when collections should take place: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/bins/lookup On a connected note, refuse collection will take place about an hour earlier this week. This will mean that the refuse collectors will not have to work during the hottest part of the day, and it will mean that bins are not in the hot sun for so long. Of course, the unfortunate other consequence of this is that it may disturb those who live on earlier parts of the round. The Council have asked Veolia, the refuse collection contractor, are as considerate as possible. Wonderwoman - this area falls in Dulwich Hill not Goose Green but I would be happy to look into getting it cleaned. Please email me with more details and (ideally) a photo. Best wishes James -
Local councillors who never respond
jamesmcash replied to Lee Scoresby's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi all Thanks for raising this. I too would be interested to hear people?s experience of this. Although I am perhaps more optimistic for a positive response! For my own part, as far as I know, I have responded to all the emails sent to me directly (if I am CCed into an email with other respondents it is sometimes more appropriate to leave it to others on the thread). However, I do receive a large volume of emails so if I am mistaken on this and have neglected to respond to a Goose Green constituent then I apologise. Please let me know what it was and I will make sure I deal with it immediately. I cannot speak for other councillors? email response rates but, as far as I can see, all those mentioned on this thread work incredibly hard. Best wishes James -

No nothing permanent. Any seating will just be there during the market itself to create more of a public space. Best wishes James -

Dear all From this Saturday onward the area of road closed for the North Cross Road market will be greater. North Cross Road will be closed between Lordship Lane and Archdale Road. This will mean that access to between North Cross Road and Archdale Road will still be there, but not access to Nutfield Road. This is to allow the market to expand over the coming months as more traders are invited in and as a public seating area is put in place. I hope that this will be an improvement to an already very successful market! Best wishes James -
Oh no, how terrible. I will make sure it is properly reported so that action can be taken. Looking forward to discussing this with Barry Area Residents Association this evening. Best wishes James

Dear all E2 - the council has dealt with the issue you raised on Upland Road. There is some minor damage to the pavement but it is very difficult to prove that this was the builders. The drain is operational. Jakido - the Liveable Neighbourhoods programme looks great. I am very supportive of measures to support cycling and walking. Of course it is also important to balance this with the needs of existing car users. I would be happy to discuss this further with you if you would like. Drop me an email if you are interested. Best wishes James -
Hi all Thanks for everyone?s comments on this. I hope that when the consultation comes around we are able to find a resolution to the speeding on Barry Road that is acceptable to everyone. I now have some more information regarding East Dulwich Road, as raised by peckhamry. Unlike for Barry Road, where there is clear evidence of speeding, the council?s data does not suggest that average speeds exceed the threshold required for intervention. The council is forced to prioritise roads based on this data so it is unlikely that I will be able to get any traffic calming measures introduced in the immediate future. However, following my enquiries, the council has committed to monitoring the situation on East Dulwich Road and I have asked for updates with new data when they are available. Best wishes James

Hi all I have a few updates which I will share. 1) Streetlight on Crystal Palace Road Alan Medic raised this a while ago and we have been liaising over email so I responded to him there a while back. I forgot that originated here but just in case anyone else was wondering, I raised the issue with the streetlighting team and it has been fixed.# 2) Fence by East Dulwich Gym The majority of the work on the construction site is complete but some is still ongoing. I have asked the council to push for the path to be open which has led to some of the changes mentioned above. The footway is supposed to be open whenever possible (i.e. when it is safe). The exception is when they have deliveries, at which point it is necessary to close it. However, I know that there have been occasions where it has been closed when it needn't have been. This has been reported. The Council has scheduled regular inspections to check up on this. The council have also removed the two portaloos which they had placed on the road (as cella noted above) so this should free up some more space. The contractors plan to be finished by the 13th July and I am asking the council to push this as much as possible. 3) Bins by East Dulwich Grove goldilocks - you are right that these bins are posing a hazard. The number of bins has been reduced and the remaining ones have been moved. Sadly, due to limited storage space in the area, the remaining bins do need to be stored on the street. Hopefully these measures will have improved things though. I hope this is helpful Best wishes James -
They are mainly recommended for areas where there have been multiple deaths or serious injuries from crashes. Personally, I think that this approach is too complacent with people's safety (and lives!) but I presume it's due to the cost implications... There is another drawback to speed cameras on Barry Road, which is due to the road layout. Speed cameras are most effective on roads where most or all of the traffic follows the same route. This means that every vehicle which is caught in the first camera is then caught in the subsequent ones too, meaning an average speed can be calculated. Barry Road, by contrast, has lots of places to park and many roads coming off it. So this means that the cameras become less effective: it will not be possible to determine the speed of many of the vehicles recorded. As I say, I will do what I can to make sure all options are considered though nonetheless. Best wishes James
-
Hi all Thanks all of this. I'll see what I can do about speed cameras. The police would not normally advise them for a road like this, and there are of course cost implcations too, but I will look into it. Peckhamry - I will look into East Dulwich Road as well, let me get back to you. Pugwash - great to hear that the Barry Area Residents' Association is on the case with this. It would be great to discuss at some point. Drop me an email if you would like to meet. Best wishes James

Hi E2 I will look into it. Thanks for letting me know. Best wishes James -
Hi all Thanks a lot for raising this important issue. Following the investigatory work that Cllr Charlie Smith spoke about, the Council has reviewed the speeds on Barry Road. This has confirmed the comments posted on here regarding speeding: the average speed on Barry Road is significantly higher than the 20mph speed limit. As a result, the ward councillors will discuss with council officers what physical measures can be put in place to reduce these speeds and therefore improve road safety. There will be a public consultation regarding the matter later this year, hopefully by early autumn. In the meantime I would be keen to hear from residents what type of physical speeding measures you would like to see implemented. Best wishes James

Hi cella I am afraid that I am still in the process of chasing this up. If you could email me at [email protected] then I can ensure that you are included in the email chain. Best wishes James -
Dear loveED86 I am afraid that we are probably not going to do a surgery at the weekend. As Renata says above, fewer and fewer people attend surgeries. So instead we are planning to prioritise engaging with residents door-to-door, as well as through digital means like this Forum. We will still do traditional surgeries but these will be on weekday evenings as we have found that this tends to attract more people. If there?s something in particular that you?d like to raise then please do email me though. Best wishes James

Some of you may have received an email about this already but for those who haven?t I thought I should let you know that the damage done to the ground caused by rain and high foot traffic will be repaired soon. These repairs are being paid for by the festival promoters. It?s been really helpful reading the feedback on this and other threads in the Forum. Alongside the feedback I have seen elsewhere it seems to me that although the events were successful in many respects, there are certainly lessons to learn for future events. Best wishes James

Dear goldilocks Let me look into this for you. I?m not sure what existing arrangements are. I can definitely see how this could contribute to the crossing being ignored by some motorists. Best wishes James -
Dear wonderwoman Yes probably. My advice would be to email them directly. Their email addresses are [email protected] and [email protected] Best wishes James
-
Hi wonderwoman It depends on where you live and who your councillors are. If you go on http://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/mgFindMember.aspx then you can find your councillors there. Clicking on a Councillor?s profile will let you see what surgeries the councillor has scheduled. As you say, Renata from Peckham Rye ward does one at the East Dulwich Community Centre on the second Saturday of the month. If you are a Goose Green resident then I am afraid we have not yet confirmed our surgeries. We are a new ward so we are still finalising plans and investigating venues. Our current plan is to do one on the second Thursday of the month at East Dulwich Community Centre, and another on the fourth Thursday of the month at a venue to the north of the ward but this is still to be determined. Best wishes James
