50p tax rate - perception or impact
david_carnell replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
MM - I would say it is fair for the reasons Timster highlights - the effects of that tax take affect those in the 50% tax bracket very little in comparison to those at the bottom end of the scale. -
Personal freedom?

Thread already in Lounge.

Surprised no one has mentioned Mayweather and the controversy there. My judgement was legal but bad form. But as Pretty Boy says..... this is the "hurt game".....he's not there to be nice.

Mmmm - although I prefer my commentary on bat and ball games. http://www.raising-redheads.com/images/Boris-Becker.jpg

I was just being silly, Moos. Of course I would love a talented, successful and beautiful daughter. Even if she was ginger. ;-) And given the colour of some of my stubble thats looking more and more likely! My Scots family are to blame.

Ah the Boris Johnson excuse - having been caught cycling whilst talking on a mobile he said that one-armed people are allowed to ride bikes. And yours is as ridiculous. You are intentionally impairing your faculties rather than battling against a physical disability. To compare the two is distasteful. You're being disingenuous here just for the sake of proving a point. Just admit you don't really care if you're unsafe and people will shrug their shoulders at your attitude. But to try and maintain a defence of reason and logic whilst all those around you (including cyclists) disagree and point out the glaring flaws is utterly absurd.

Of course they inhibit physically - they stop you hearing as well. And to say they don't is just plain wrong - if they allowed you to hear as well as normal then you wouldn't be able to hear whatever it is you're listening to. QED.

I have the same opinion on beer and yet Her Majesty's constabularly still insist on limiting me to a single pint of nut-brown ale before getting behind the wheel of my motor vehicle. Ridiculous nanny-state moddycoddling. Tell you what DJKQ - try cycling blindfolded. Makes the journey much more fun and you can rely on your other senses for guidance - like smell. You'll know you've hit a bus when you can smell the diesel fumes from the engine on your own face.

PGC - I may be in love with Christina Hendricks but I'm not sure I'd want my daughter to look like her!

No I wasn't being ironic. I'm just asking, nay pleading, with you (and others) to just stop. It's relentless and isn't even limited to this thread. I get it. You have issues with other forumites. Don't we all. But the rest of us seem to manage without resorting to this sort of stuff. Accusations of cliques, subtle intimidation, bullying etc. Have you been on many other forums? Have you seen them? This is like paradise. God, sometimes it's like being back at school in here with the childlike behaviour that takes place. I say that I talk for no one but myself but I'm bloody tired of it. -

Can I be the first to say.....ENOUGH. For the love of god, give it a rest. Please. This is actually getting painful to read. And that's not through sympathy. The amount of passive-aggressive behaviour on here is startling. -
Alan Mods can edit all posts and it won't show as an edit. I think this is due to the forum software rather than any choice of subterfuge and is just to allow us to tidy up the place without lots of "edited by..." signs everywhere and endless questions of "why?" etc. As a side effect, it means if we edit our own posts it doesn't show either. I can't speak for the rest of the team but whenever I've done so I try to remember to manually type in "edited" at the bottom so there is no room for accusations of changing things to make others look silly or some such. I hope that clears things up.

Johann Hari - Hypocrite or Victim?
david_carnell replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm not sure I buy the whole "The only reason this happened was because I never learnt journalism the proper way and just went straight to the Indy from university...." As if somehow going on a course will stop him from being an arrogant twat who has given the right wing press and blogosphere ammunition for years to come. People have fallen on their swords for less. -
Can be found here: [orderorder.files.wordpress.com] Summary is: In Southwark, we noted that the electorate was too large for two constituencies. We also noted that the existing Bermondsey and Old Southwark, and Camberwell and Peckham constituencies each have an electorate within 5% of the electoral quota. We considered that it was necessary to make minor changes to both of them to fit in with the pattern of neighbouring constituencies. We propose that the Peckham Rye ward should be included in the Dulwich and Sydenham constituency instead of the Camberwell and Peckham constituency, that the Newington ward should be included in the Camberwell and Peckham constituency instead of the Bermondsey and Old Southwark constituency, and that the Bishop?s ward of the Borough of Lambeth should be included in a renamed Bermondsey and Waterloo constituency.

You can bet there were intense discussions about what to wear and the use of wheelchairs at No10 and City Hall in the days leading up to this. Civil servants and SpAds would have been in knots over it.

Oh no - nothing wrong with her. I've no probs with the music. And live she has great personality and banter. I own the albums. I'm a fan. My only criticism is that her music doesn't really push any boundaries or move music forward. But that's fine. She's not trying to. She just sings good songs with a very good voice. I don't think she should win the Mercury though. She won a ton of Brits and god knows what other awards. The Mercurys are meant to be about more than just record sales. As I said before I hope they give exposure and kudos to artists often missed by the mainstream or acknowledge a zeitgesit about to break or just reward years of unacknowledged hard work.

50p tax rate - perception or impact
david_carnell replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Huguenot - to accuse me of using cartoon arguments and then proceed to paint an inaccurate portrait of me as some unreformed Scargillite is not only hypocritical but ridiculous. And whilst knocking down my straw man you proceed to build your own. I have never expressed a desire to take into state hands the means of production. Do I think some public infrastructure fails miserably when left to the private sector on the other hand? Absolutely. And perhaps you could outline your own ideological standpoint - just so we all know you have solutions as well as criticisms. -
A worrying likeness.

50p tax rate - perception or impact
david_carnell replied to Marmora Man's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I guess I could feel more sympathetic to Huguenot's plight if he was, in fact, paying the 50% tax rate. But he doesn't. Because he lives and works abroad. Standing outside the tent pissing in. I'm not sure you get to bleat about how awfully hard done by the rich are from your sunnier climbs. You're essentially a tax exile. And whilst I respect all those who use their fortune for job creation, they are the same people who threatened that the minimum wage would destroy businesses - cobblers then as now. The idea of a philanthropic rich who, if left to their own devices, would donate loads to charity, create wealth throughout society (the notorious "trickle-down effect" is palpable nonsense. They don't unless you make them. I can see the logic of the argument about the small amount of extra income that it generates - but why don't all these people leave the country because of the 40% tax rate? Is the extra 10% really so punative you throw your toys out the pram and head for the Cayman Islands? I doubt it. -
Pah - King Creosote & Jon Hopkins should have won. A beautiful album. No one should be allowed the Mercury twice. It's meant to bring critical aclaim to under-the-radar artists. Otherwise you might as well have given it to bloody Adele.
