  1. Round-robin letter received this week regarding this. Main points are that the number of new homes is being reduced from 877 to 867. OK, not much change there, but.... "A reduction in the number of affordable homes from 270 (35% by habitable room) to 77 (12% by habitable room)" That's a 72% reduction in the number of affordable homes. I don't know a lot about this kind of thing, but it seems that just 77 affordable homes in a development of 867 is a massive pee-take in an area where a 1-bed flat is £400K+ if it isn't "affordable." If you're interested, the application can be viewed at https://planning.southwark.gov.uk/online-applications/ ref 24/AP/2074 and there's a lot of objections to the reduction in affordable homes. The drop-in sessions are Weds 26th Feb (Peckham Library) and Mon 3rd March (All Saints Church) at 3pm. Full details attached. 24_AP_2074-FILE_COPY_-_NEIGHBOUR_NOTIFICATION_LIST-4005193.pdf
  2. I noticed 4 gone in a short stretch of Bellenden Road alone this weekend. I had no idea it was to do with the tech and thought that it was a retro Beastie Boys thing. Showing my age. Sorry I can only find a Facebook link if you are too young to remember this: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=578367166664170 Totally agree that it's a bad design flaw, and I bet the actual cost of the parts to VW is minimal so they could easily cough up some of the replacement costs. It's depressing that someone can go along a street popping these things off cars with very little worry about being prosecuted.
  3. Clipper Organic has been my go-to for years. I don't think the Organic is any more expensive than the non-organic. Cant beat it, and they do English Breakfast if you want something a bit brighter. Ringtons English Breakfast is another good option but there aren't many stockists around here. Morrisons might sell it still. https://www.ringtons.co.uk/products/ringtons-breakfast-tea-bags-x-50
  4. Thanks for this info. Looks like quite a major project.
  5. I expect this has been mentioned somewhere else but has got buried in the GALA threads. What's going on on the Common part of of Peckham Rye? They seem to be building a temporary road from the Nunhead side of the Rye.
  6. Maybe some constructive help like Sue's reply would have been more appropriate, rather than your unpleasantly smarmy comment. Although the original thread title was vague, the first post introduced the thread quite clearly. Bet you felt quite pleased with yourself after your first reply 🤡 There's an increasing problem with some dog owners thinking they don't need to control their dogs and it's become worse since the pandemic. I recall taking my little boy to the part of Peckham Rye Park by the school for a little picnic. A Labrador-sized dog started to pester my son for his food while the owner was over the other side of the park chatting to her friends. When my son got scared and ran away, the dog chased him and my son was terrified. I called the owner over and she just laughed, saying that the dog was friendly. When I said that it's scary for a 2 year old, she got grumpy and said that I should know better than take a young kid to an area where dogs play. I didn't know at the time that that part of the park is considered to be an exercise space for dogs, and there were no dogs around when we'd sat down. I would expect any responsible owner to keep an eye on their dog and make sure that they don't harass anyone who does not welcome them. Then you get the owners who let their dogs run around in the dog-free picnic space in the park.....
  7. It's fine for a cheap pizza if you can collect. Most of the meats are indistinguishable from each other taste-wise (i.e. salty). Pizza Gogo, Dominos etc. penalise you for buying a single pizza (e.g. £18 for one, £22 for two) so £8 for a single pizza is good value if you just want some stodge to feed 2-3 people cheaply and quickly. Haven't tried the tandoori so that's a good shout.
  8. Malumbu would never derail a thread. If he didn't see anyone p***ing in the bushes, then it didn't happen. OK? It does seem that GALA has outgrown Peckham Rye Park in terms of its appeal. I've been going to festivals, big and small, for many years. I've seen many niche festivals grow from boutique chill-outs to being featured for the whole weekend on Radio 1. They don't always grow physically, but the appeal gets more mainstream, and the crowd morphs from local 25+s who are there for the music to the 18-25s who travel across the country and are there to get mashed and to show everyone they were there on Instagram. I don't know if this is representative of GALA, but the reports of anti-social behaviour in the park and the streets would seem that it's going the same way.
  9. That's good to know. Looks like Day Lewis pulled out in December and a new business (Pharmtrack Ltd trading as Bellenden Road Pharmacy) has taken on the licence to operate it. Good luck to them. Still very happy with Vale for prescriptions but good to know that there is an option.
  10. The signal has deteriorated significantly in the last few years. There was always a huge dead spot in Peckham (all the way from Lidl to Queens Road station in my experience) but this seems to have spread. I used to get a good signal around Goose Green and Dawson's Heights (at the bottom, not up high) but it's impossible to get calls or data at either spot. I took this up with Vodafone a year or so ago. They refused to accept that there is a problem in the area. They said they will send someone out to check the signal if they get enough complaints from the area (which is difficult if you can't get through to them). After I complained in writing, they grudgingly activated the WiFi calling on my plan. This is useful if you're at home without a signal. You can make/receive calls over your WiFi from your mobile without needing to use a separate app like WhatsApp. The problem is that the call drops for a second when the phone decides to flip back to the mobile network. You can turn the mobile network off completely, but then you don't get SMS text messages.
  11. Thanks for posting that. I've also heard those noises and always wondered what they are. I assumed it would be foxes but wondered if it was frogs in the Wildlife Gardening Centre (https://www.wildlondon.org.uk/nature-reserves/centre-wildlife-gardening)
  12. I suspect that Chris's "Not what you expect in East Dulwich" was just a throwaway comment and doesn't warrant anyone suggesting that he's got an attitude. Moreover, while I accept that crime is a problem in ED and all local suburbs, I've lived here for 20+ years and would agree that several vans of riot police with guns is out of the norm and "not what you would expect" in the middle of a Tuesday morning.
  13. Maybe this one? https://www.stjohnseastdulwich.org/
  14. A lot of the prepacked ham was very grey the other day. Must have been out of the fridge for a long time while they've been reshuffling everything. A sign said that the refurb should be complete by early December, so check your purchases carefully until then.
  15. Nice to see the independent pharmacies succeeding where the chains are doing a poor job. I've never been to Sogim but Vale is very good, albeit a bit disorganised. Co-op pulled out of the store that was the old Sogim. Day Lewis on Bellenden Road has the rudest lad on customer service (after visiting several times for my prescription, he snapped at me that I should stop hassling them until I received a text. I'm still waiting for the text and that's over a year ago now). Lloyds have pulled out of Sainsburys and now North Cross Road. I never once managed to pick up a prescription without having to wait 15+ mins while they tried to locate it. So, no great loss, as long as the independents survive. I always try to buy something extra when I go into Vale.
