Ruskin park - word of warning
anonymous_third_part replied to Skin_deep's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Not all older men on their own in parks are peados. -
Evidence is that masks are effective - pretty much three-fold - for stopping asymptomatic carriers of the virus spreading it, aerosol spreading can reach more than 2 metres - so masks can protect, and finally, they are symbol we are in a pandemic and it changes peoples behaviour - stop touching your face, be sensible etc. Hong Kong has 4 deaths. The govt there said no need to wear masks, but people wore them anyway - it's socially unacceptable to be out without a mask. Govt also introduced testing, mandatory hospital and quarantine for those with covid-19. A final point - if the govt said lockdown is over, but you have to wear a mask, would you wear masks or still save them for front line staff? The UK govt and epidemiologists got this wrong - strategy has failed completely. So to conclude, buy masks, wear them - they work and are effective.

I actually have a website and take card payments in person - it's much cheaper to accept a card payment and pay the small charge (1.5-2.25%) than trying to pay cash in the bank. Less staff fraud, less chance of getting robbed and less chance of getting your books wrong - it makes no sense whatsoever to not want to accept all card payments - unless you are trying to dodge paying taxes

Recommending Plumber - Hunter Heating Solutions
anonymous_third_part replied to HunterHtingSolutions's topic in Reviews
Billy is a great heating engineer and plumber. Really impressed with the boiler fitting and service. He kept me informed and sent photos of progress throughout the day and easy to pay via BACS too. Billy's number - 07986 296453 Happy to provide further feedback if needed. -
Virgin media broadband broken
anonymous_third_part replied to Al&Em's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
i'm ditching virgin media and moving to EE. The service is good when it works, but far too unreliable. EE will probably be the same though - but ?33 a month cheaper. Like all companies, they haven't invested in infrastructure for ages, so it always fails somewhere. -
Can anyone recommend a restaurant near London Bridge?

@ Charles Notice - I looked too. There is no way you could have a public path that close to a live railway line. 1. Safety - its an electrified mainline used 24 hours a day. 2. Environment - it would be horrendously noisy with screeching trains all the time. 3. Network rail will own the land. Who will pay for it to make this happen? As I said previously, the high line in Manhattan was a completely separate railway line for the meatpacking district - so feasibly could be turned into a park. This clearly couldn't be. It is a brilliant idea though and clever people are working on it, it might just happen
-
A slight issue with this plan is that the line is basically next to live train lines. Tue high line in New York in the meat packing district was a disused high line railway, completely separate from other rails. From what I can see from Googlemaps this is not a separate line at all. There is a similar early plan for the disused railway next to Shoreditch High Street- I think that one has more likelihood of success. I

driving is great. i find its best saturday morning very early - stick to the M11 then on to A1 - normally takes around 4 hours 45 mins.

i've paid a couple of times for people when they didn't have the money on their oyster card and no cash. I'm sure if a child got on a bus, someone would help. i suppose you're all off to smash up the looms now?

Peckham Rye Ward
anonymous_third_part replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The burnt out shops are a disgrace! -
I think everyone knew that the station was due to be redeveloped though. The decision to redevelop the station is no surprise to anyone.
-
My main point is that "consultation" in most cases slows down change, leaving areas undeveloped. Louisa makes a good point regarding Peckham and th eRye Lane area - so many different plans have come and gone. Decisions should be made and then the plans implemented.
-
the stations' surrounding buildings are in dire need of being knocked down and redeveloped. I think it's very selfish of businesses (even if they are trendy) of taking advantage of cheap rent in old buildings and then campaigning for them not to be redeveloped. Places like the refreshment rooms and the Sunday Painter could easily relocate. The area will be great if it is redeveloped. From what I can see of other areas with similar shops (Brixton, Dalston) the premisis for butchers and fishmongers are not suitable. they need to have drainage in front of each shop instead of cleaning it out on to the street and into drains on the street. This should be imposed by the council. The hairdressers just rent chairs in these shops, so many people come in and out that weave just blows out the door. This is especially evident with children running in and out. I think the shops needs to get together to come up with a solution to stop it happening, i.e. pay someone to collect litter or explain to chair renters that they need to clean up. At the end of the day, it is littering and fines can be (and should be) imposed. Anyone who 'loves the diversity' of rye lane would appreciate redevelopment. Decisions need to be made, and consultation is in my opinion a delaying tactic so people can either get loads of compensation or continue to make money at the expense of the wider community.

Homemade to close:(
anonymous_third_part replied to midivydale's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
not that surprised. when i went in last time the quality of the ingredients had taken a turn for the worst - they had stsrted using very cheap sausages. it is very hard to make money from a cafe if two people are trying to make an income. -

Agreed. If you miss the train to Peckham from Victoria you now have 2 options - via blackfriars or via clap junc. The issue is there are no direct trains in the evenings -
London Overground line extension timetable
anonymous_third_part replied to craigyboy71's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I think the issue was that the timetable was pretty crap - I.e. the Following departure times from Victoria to Peckham 19.09 19.11 19.39 19.41 Pointless really! The major issue is a lack of trains in the evening - there is a plan to get these quite soon though. Otherwise you have to go via clapham junction / blackfriars - which adds 20 minutes to the journey - quite grim really. It is clearly a waste of platform space using prime platforms for the SLL instead of long distance services whilst LB is being redeveloped and Victoria is so congested though. -
The East London Line extension

The East London Line extension
anonymous_third_part replied to PN33's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
surely changing at clapham junction won't be a huge problem - and it opens up waterloo as well. i think people should wait until its introduced and see what you think. On the face of it, it does look bad losing the victoria service though. -
Train service under threat
anonymous_third_part replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
surely if demand for the victoria services is there, more trains will be put on this route in the future? i agree that metro frequency with direct trains to victoria is pretty much essential from Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye- as this is a major terminus and area with a lot of offices etc. -
