Tessa Jowell Centre ,use of masks
Otto2 replied to womanofdulwich's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
High ceilings do not mean a place is ventilated - ventilated is when there is a mechanism for fresh air to enter - a window, an air duct, etc. Here is a really great little widget from The British Medical Journal where you can calculate risk and what difference different measures make. Masks are not just a "public signal" - if the right mask is worn properly, it can make a real difference alongside other measures. https://www.bmj.com/content/375/bmj-2021-065312.full?ijkey=PuBVt2y7ykdLW5J&keytype=ref -

I said "a great deal of social", not people. I'm bowing out. I amended my post as I saw it was being misinterpreted and I am sorry it continues to be.
-
Actually - with respect back - no - it came up before I posted - hence the post.
-
Okay - I am going to modify my previous post as it is perhaps obscuring my larger point which is: I would like to see our environmental issues less played by politics and more addressed with the urgency they require in as apolitical a fashion as can be.
-
LTN policy comes from the (Tory) gov't (see the previously referenced net zero report on .gov among others) and is being implemented locally by our elected (Labour) councillors. There is also participation in anti-LTN from the Reform UK party and they seem quite active re: the Dulwich LTN on social. I think [people from all political angles land on both sides of the debate but it is also going to be used as a tool in election campaigns. I would like to see our environmental issues less played by politics and more addressed with the urgency they require in as apolitical a fashion as can be.

There are various chemicals used in paper production - probably not ideal.
-
I am not making a point. I am providing a link to information and details about transport policy goals re: the Gov't net zero strategy. I have not changed the link. I specifically avoided making a point to keep things neutral. It is a good read.

I think the single lane for dual traffic from DV up Calton was not ideal and as others had started to cry that there was nothing wrong, I thought I would add in my personal experience. I am disabled. Cycling is easier than walking for me. I am BAME. I do not live on an LTN. I live extremely nearby an A road. I work on a busy local road. I am asthmatic. I am over 50. You are speaking for me for the most part but I am not an emergency services worker and it is my understanding they are in close liaison for all these changes.
-
I do feel bad for all the people demonstrating - change is hard. I've seen people who were initially super irritated by the LTN's that have come round to understand that they are working, that it will take time to see more shift, that they are the first step. That this is a long process. I have a glimmer of hope we will not burn down this planet from that and I do feel for anyone that finds these changes hard. Metallic - I meant that there were no Marshalls marshalling me thru. I am sure there were Marshalls - just that they had zero involvement with my journeys or ushering etc.
-
I cycled through. Both ways. The issue is that this was a narrow area for two way traffic on bikes. Turning from Village Way onto Calton was a little tricky but do-able. If someone were cycling the opposite way at the time I would have been stuck in the middle of the roadway though. Thankfully I was not. Edited to say there were no marshals that I saw on my way thru.

You could go NYC style and put alternate side of the street parking in place. What that means is you have to park on the opposite side of the street each day and move your car daily - by 8am. There are never enough spots for everyone and people grow tired of waking up early to secure a spot on the other side and - then - the idea of having a car is less attractive as it is burdensome. It also insures people weigh up the idea of storing a car on the street vs how much they use it and that also discourages car ownership.

Thanks for posting. Go Berlin. Will be interesting to see how it goes. "But is banning cars necessary, and what is wrong with electric vehicles? ?We would need about half of cars to go electric next year in order to meet the federal government?s own targets for transportation emissions,? said Nik Kaestner, from the campaign. ?That clearly isn?t going to happen ? currently only 1.3% of vehicles in Germany are electric. So the only solution is to reduce the amount of driving that?s happening, not just to change how we drive.? Bike stolen out side Dulwich sports centre
Otto2 replied to Natty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ah - I have an older Hiplok and it is great. Just pledged. Thanks! Sorry about your bike theft Natty - just awful. I hope somehow that minty wonder finds its way back to you... -
You'd be surprised how much these guys can deliver by bicycle! Here's one example...
-
I'd love to see the council require home delivery services to do so by bicycle tbh. And a national listing of companies that deliver their goods by bicycle. Pedal Me App guys can carry a massive amount on their bikes - kegs, a fridge, a house move...this is do-able. There is an increase in cars and will continue to be an increase in cars to the point no one can get anywhere. That is why convincing some people to make the shift is important in addition to pollution, climate change, health, etc. People are avoiding public transport still if they can and jumping in cars. Or, on bikes or feet.
-
Ahahaha
-
I think the space on the roads should be for all modes of transport. I understand your perspective but it seems incredibly car-centric. People who are helping alleviate congestion, pollution and climate change should be encouraged!
