Completely agree! There was an unnecessary traffic jam caused by parked cars and no less than three people carriers (with one or two children sitting regally on the back seats) trying to get past each other but being too wide to do so. Someone sensibly whistled loudly to get cars to reverse and managed the traffic flow. And through all this, those on foot had to weave themselves and their children in and out of the mass of cars, hoping that the drivers had seen them! Absolutely not safe.
  2. Reported it. But how can we get people to clean up after their dogs?
  3. Definitely a constant presence on Goodrich Road. Had to remove some from our front patch this morning...utterly disgusting.
  4. I had hoped that there would be enough serious takers...but clearly there don't seem to be! A shame. It could have been a fun thing to organise.
  5. Hi, Well, there seems to be some itnerest out there but not enough to get this off the ground properly...I think a group of about 10 would be good. I'll wait to see if there are any more replies.
  6. Hi, Here's a suggestion for a community spirited version of come Dine with Me (without the TV cameras...)! We could take it in turns to host a home-cooked dinner, which those who attend would pay for. All proceeds to go to the charity of the host's choice. Three benefits: meet new people locally; fund raise for a charity; have a great meal. Feedback welcome as I would like to get something like this going, with others who would willingly participate.

  8. It took me four and a half hours to get home on monday evening, the very last stretch having been completed after I stuck out my thumb and a very kind driver stopped and drove me to my door so that I did not have to grapple with the ice. Thank you again for helping out.
  9. A "curry house"! What a sad, limiting and shallow term to describe what COULD be a treasure trove of culinary delights, which a good Indian restaurant generally is...! Wait for what was chopsticks to reopen and then vote on whether you think it's a "curry house" or something far superior. And no, I'm not one of the owners, neither am i family! Just someone who likes to keep an open mind about things and not prejudge them.
  10. Glad that Charlie and Pepsi are suitably enticed! I'm going to ask them if I can write their menu!
  11. Hi, "Curry house" has been mentioned more than once in this thread...It's a pity that this term is used as Indian cuisine is much more than curries! It's almost tantamount to calling a restaurant serving British cuisine a chip shop! Anyway, it is likely that an Indian vegetarian restaurant would serve all sorts of snacks e.g. dosas (very thin rice flour pancakes stuffed with tasty fillisng), bhel puri (tiny little flat breads heaped with lovely tasty things topped with a date chutney); idli sambar (rice cakes with a hot gravy with vegetables)...and more like this. If this is the case, it will certainly not e a "curry house" or like other Indian restaurants on LL. We'll have to wait and see what they come up with. Someone mentioned Brick Lane...two major differences. The waiters in LL are not hanging out on the road hassling people to try out their highly over-rated fare; secondly, the food in LL is far superior to that in Brick Lane today - they seem to think that pouring different coloured gravies on thawed chicken should result in a chicken curry - well, IMO it doesn't!
  12. I hope they get caught - if not now, at some stage. What about apporoaching the school? Could the school be identified by their uniform? A small point: how do you know they are Indian? Coyuld they be Pakistani? Bangladeshi? Sri Lankan?
  13. Thanks SCSB! Hope he gets his exhaust reinstated, and then puts his feet up (on his sofa).
  14. So glad this has come up and is annoying others too! I thought I was getting old and crabby! And I thought it might be a pizza delivery...Complaining seems a good idea but after reading the posts I am unsure - are we dealing with one biker or many?
  15. Had post yesterday (Tuesday)and we are also sort of opposite Goodrich school...
  16. Had a similar encounter years ago...she needed a taxi to take her very ill father to Croydon. Why Croydon, when Kings College hospital was around the corner? Of course, no answer to that one. I offered to dial 999 for her and call an ambulance. But no, it was ?25 for a taxi or nothing! And so it was nothing...
  17. sorry to hear about this Heath. How did the thieves get in? It'salways useful to find out their MO... Hope you recover your property.
  18. Lovely idea! And I'd vote for Casablanca out of the shortlist. But perhaps in the future Doctor Zhivago? Gone with the Wind? a Merchant & Ivory season? Where do you get tickets in advance from? Good luck!
  19. For Ratty, A few years with Shelter.
  20. Hi all, Surprised at the ungenerous tone of some of the posts on this thread...Here's what I do quite frequently, especially when I see the woman sitting on the pavement outside somerfield's. I don't give her any money BUT I do have a short chat and get her a sandwich and a nutritional milk drink (her request and it's a drink she clearly likes). That's easy enough to do and nobody need go into endless angst about whether or not to drop a few coins in a needy person's direction and, if so, whether they'll go to the nearest boozer with it or whether instead to send it to a charity - and if you do the latter, it's always worth checking how the money is going to be used! I say that advisedly - I used to work at a top homeless people's charity.
  21. Read this with interest! The offender has been waking us up too (we're on Goodrich, between Friern and Dunstans) and I always thought it was from the house on the corner of Goodrich and Friern...It certainly seems to know when it's Sunday when you can hear him particularly loud and clear. My partner thinks it's rather quaint and suggestive of living in the countryside rather than in Zone 3. I think not! And anyway, when the cockerel fails to serende us at the weekends, you can be sure that the alarm at the Pupil Referral Unit (same stretch of Goodrich Road) is bound to go off! Now that's more like it...
  22. A lovely thread! It's inspired me to remember - and value - everything I love about ED, and why I've lived here for over 20 years! And in no particular order, here's a few: The fact that I can walk to five parks from where I live; the library and staff on Barry Road; spring and autumn in Dulwich Park; the fact that my garden overlooks lots of other gardens; the people who run the Greetings Shop who, true to their shop name, always find the time to greet you and have a chat; the friendly stallholders on North Cross Road market; breakfast at the Blue Mountain and baguettes at the French place on LL (name escapes me); the greengrocers on North Cross Road; the Cheeseblock and all that's in it; SMBS for inevitably getting me out of tight spots hours before a dinner party (with a special word for the lovely Amit but I won't divulge it here); Tam at Village Way Hairdressersfor a great service (he always seems to know when a head massage would come in handy...); the buzz around LL; the fact that ED has a mixed community which seems to gel well and where I feel at home!
  23. Hi all, One forum member got in touch with me (via private email) to say that he / she was already on to it! So, expect to be surprised in the new year and we may just get our guide to ED which we can proudly share with family and friends! Shaila

But such a book would have to be more than just a directory of listing which can, as you point out, go out of date too quickly. I shall look at the book on Notting Hill once again and remind myself, and share with you all, what it contains! Shaila
