  1. We've got Dutch friends coming over for the weekend and we thought it would be cool to take them to the HQ of the Dutch Resistance which was apparently in Dulwich during WWII. I remember seeing a thread on EDF saying where this was but cant find the thread. Does anyone know where the Dutch Resistance was based during the war? The thread was something to do with why the houses just off ED Grove were called Delft Way etc..

Supposedly the EDG / LL junction is under review at the moment and Southwark Council said they had gotten funding from TFL on how to improve it. Difficult to know if this is true or if anything will come of it but this is what the guy who runs the department said when asked about what they were doing...
  4. Hi James, #185 bus at 8.10am this morning. Inched along in traffic. Lights went red in front then green. Two cars went through, then red again when someone pressed the pelican crossing button, putting the lights to red again. So two red lights within one minute. This is fairly typical from before 8am to 8.30am. Not sure about after that as I'm never there after 8.30am. You are right, it is a balancing act but every morning there are long tailbacks down to Goose Green roundabout and along Grove Vale at rushhour, caused by the on demand pelican crossing. It would be wrong to cause additional danger to pedestrians by making the pelican crossing very infrequent. But there surely must be a balance that helps the traffic flow while giving pedestrians reasonable crossing access. How about giving pedestrians one crossing every 2 minutes when demanded or something... It is not as if it is the worlds busiest pedestrian crossing... As Hugenot said, it is probably very mathematical so I'm sure someone at the council could apply themselves to the problem for 10 minutes and come up with the right answer. What time do you go past on the bus?
  5. What is a flat white? Some kind of coffee I know but what exactly is it and why does it cost much more than a latte?
  6. There is a strong hint of 'issues' here rather than just plain opinions...
  7. Bore bore bore. If you dont like a pub with kids in it find another one that doesn't. Boho never seems to have kids in it neither does the Adventure bar. I don't think the Castle is packed with kids. What about the Nags Head in Peckham Rye. Need I go on... Do you really think that pubs that are raking it in, because they are full all day with parents spending decent amounts of money on food and drink, should ban kids just to suit you and your wish for somewhere quiet? The fact a lot of these pubs are nicely appointed is because the owners can afford to do them up because they are full of families and not because they are quiet and empty (and therefore not making much money). The great thing about living in East Dulwich is the choice and the family atmosphere. If you don't like the latter, exercise your choice and find somewhere quiet, empty, losing money and go there.
  8. You are probably right, it probably is more complex than one would imagine. However, it doesn't take a mathematician to see that there are huge tailbacks to ED station and then a clear run for the next 3/4 of a mile to Kings College Hospital. I do that journey every day and it is exactly as described.
  9. James, As you probably know, the traffic jams down LL to Goose Green roundabout and up Grove Vale can be attrocious, particularly in the morning. Simple solution....get the pelican crossing at ED Station changed from on demand to timed. I was on a bus this week which sat in traffic as 3 people in the space of 2 minutes pressed the button and halted the traffic. Only one or two cars were getting through each time before another red man and the tailback snaked all the way down Grove Vale. This seems to be the single cause of the traffic jams (well, apart from there being too many cars on that stretch of road). If it can't be timed, what about on demand but timed i.e. once one green man has been displayed, there is a 2 or 3 minute interval to the next one. And it probably wouldn't cost that much to implement... Better traffic flow, less delays to buses, lower pollution levels on Grove Vale, smaller tailbacks on Lordship Lane, lots of happy people. What do you think?

Why should it be par for the course? Why should we accept it? There is nothing like a cynic, who thinks anyone trying to improve things by complaining about things like littering, to ensure that the place remains less pleasant that it might be. If we all had that attitude we'd be in a real hole.
  11. pk Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > a mother with a child dropped a tissue and then > picked it up > > does she really need to be described in detail and > then labelled a "disgusting" "lazy mare"? it's > outrage over nothing init? Unfortunately some people seem to think that insulting someone is much worse than committing a criminal offence which is viewed by most people as pretty unpleasant too and a blight on the community. Insulted is the very least the person dropping the litter can hope for. Shame she wasn't paying ?80 fine for the priviledge of being able not to give a toss about what happens to the litter she throws away. Respect is not something that you are given, it is something you earn. And you seldom earn respect by littering parks (or using the phrase 'init'...)
  12. People smoking outside Boho are very good at using the ashtray on the bin. Unfortunately it seems to keep setting the bin on fire...
  13. pk Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > why is it necessary to try to publicly embarrass > and insult the mother in question? Are you for real? Surely it is totally obvious. Maybe if people were publicly embarrassed more often they wouldn't do things like dropping litter 4 feet from a bin. What else do you think will stop people doing this (apart of course from having been brought up properly or police intervention...)?
  14. I read all of them but still find it creepy that someone asked for an attractive young woman's address on EDF.
  15. NCT classes in ED were worth every penny. The support you get is excellent, the people you meet are invaluable to your early parenthood (and if you are lucky you will end up with a new group of friends), and the birthing information you pick up is something you could easily miss in books. As a bloke, I only felt odd the one time when we were practicing helping partners to breathe correctly... The best one was the dads night where we talked through our fears and got to ask all sorts of stupid questions that we'd not been brave enough to ask in front of our wives. Our NCT group is still meeting up (particularly the girls) and we're looking forward to a joint 1 yr birthday party coming up. Go for it.
  16. This is scary. If I ever see someone asking about my address on here I'll be digging the mace spray out...
  17. I was worried that it closed down after some of the 'righteous' brigade called in the Daily Mail... Thank goodness that isn't the case.
  18. South London is given to subsidence. That shouldn't stop insurers insuring you. For example, Churchill ask the question "Are you aware of any subsidence in your local area" and when you check what this means they say "within 100 metres". So unless someone in your street has had subsidence, it shouldn't be an issue. Some insurers make the 'local area' very vague but if it meant the whole of ED or the whole of S London there would be a lot of us with no insurance.
  19. Probably because the wait for a pizza in the Gowlett seems to be between one and two hours if you are lucky...
  20. What would you do if you saw a woman liquidising a Big Mac and chips and feeding it to her podgy baby?
  21. Wouldn't it be funny if he was telling his mates about this woman in the park who gave him the creeps by staring at him for 2 minutes or more.... cate Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > stevebailey Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > You stood and watched someone who gave you the > > creeps for 2 minutes???!!! > > > I wasn't close by ! 22. Tulip - apologies for my sarcastic appraisal of your suggestions earlier. Your latest post is very informative and sounds very sensible. Thanks for that. Booking online sounds like a good development. Hopefully DMC will bring this in. I'd be very keen to see the same doctor when I've had a good experience with one particular doctor.
  23. Cars are a bloody nuisance. They are the things that cause the congestion. Drivers at rush hour are generally selfish fat lazy people who think that public transport or any less polluting mode of transport is beneath them. And lets not start on the school-run morons.... A car driver suggesting that cyclists cause accidents is like a fishermen suggesting that dolphins reduce fish stocks. There is no such thing as a responsible car user. When you use your car for a journey that you could do by bike or public transport (i.e. low pollution) you are being irresponsible. 24. I can strongly recommend trying the Northern Line for a week. After that, the train commute will seem like absolute paradise! It's all about what you are used to. Give it time, you'll become as inured to it as most of the rest of us are. Parsley Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I've just started a new job based in the City. 25. "I suggest if anyone who is unhappy asks to speak to the practice manager. You could even join your practice's patient participation group rather than spouting off on here." Good idea Tulip. I have been guilty of only making my annoyance at having to wait for up to an hour at a time in the waiting room to the receptionist. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong. Only the Practice Manager is qualified to accept complaints. And why not waste more time joining a patient participant group so that DMC can address the blatantly obvious on a regular basis in a group situation. Thanks for the suggestions. Last two surgeries I've been registered at (one for 18 years in the 'regions' and one for 10 years in another part of S London) had absolutely no problem at all with delays past appointment time. Hell, they even allowed me to see the same couple of doctors time after time rather than sending me round a sea of different faces with every appointment. Unfortunately, ED does not seem to be blessed with surgeries that are this well organised. Having tried Melbourne Grove and been utterly horrified by their organisation, tone of voice etc (notable exception for Dr Johnson who is, as people have said, absolutely excellent), I've now ended up at DMC and am getting disillusioned too. Any other suggestions for a more organised medical centre in ED that has decent doctors, appointment times that are pretty much as you are told when you book and a policy of people generally seeing the same one or two doctors?
