former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
Gimme replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
After 3 years of procrastination, dithering and obfuscation Southwark council has finally put speed bumps into Matham Grove, Ashbourne Grove and Chesterfield Grove. What a battle to get there but they are amazing bumps. Traffic on Matham has really slowed down. James Barber has been a fantastic help in breaking through the council bureaucracy and instrumental in getting the funding put in place. Thank you very much for all the effort James and for ensuring it happened. Are councillors allowed to accept a bottle of wine as a thank you? -
Tuesday 9th August - Any trouble affecting East Dulwich?
Gimme replied to Administrator's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Amazing the effect that closing Coop early has had on Londis. After a horrific night for them last night, they had queues of shoppers out of the door tonight. Palmerston was busy too. Great to see people rallying round the places that got hit. Sirens seem to have died down too. Hopefully a quiet night tonight. -
Tuesday 9th August - Any trouble affecting East Dulwich?
Gimme replied to Administrator's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
We've heard of people apparently been told by police that they are closing major roads, and have heard LL is being closed. Is this true or is it a misinterpretation? It sounds odd that LL would be closed to traffic. Any news on this? -
Yeah. Their fault for not being numerous enough... They are probably reluctance to shoot people at present too.

It is a moronic article. The riots have nothing to do with anything referred to by Nina Power. Don't get the hump just because people read something that looks like utter tripe and comment on it. From the looks of it, the rioting is nothing to do with austerity cuts and more to do with copy catting what is on TV in the context of the police being too busy to deal with it. What sort of social protest does nicking fags from Londis and trainers from Footlocker in Brixton make...? whibel Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > BrandNewGuy Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > whibel Wrote: > > > -------------------------------------------------- > > > ----- > > > There is a context to London's riots that > can't > > be > > > ignored > > > > > > http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/aug/0 > > > > > > 8/context-london-riots > > > > I call bullsh*t. 14-year-olds out on the > streets > > looting have spent all but one of those years > > under a Labour government. Going back to the question on boycotting Le Chardon... There are probably a lot of people who boycott it anyway because the food is pretty awful and the service is worse. Lets hope this thread hasn't encouraged people to go to Le Chardon to get their foie gras fix!

Most cyclists are probably as safe as most truckers or car drivers, with a small minority who are reckless. But those reckless minority have a lot less potential to cause injury and damage than the reckless truckers or drivers (see carnage caused on M25 yesterday as an example). Is it more fun to come up with silly generalisations than it is to use well thought out argument? And why do we continually see threads on this forum about dangerous cyclists but never about dangerous drivers? Is it because we are so used to seeing dangerous or stupid driving that it doesn't merit comment? I can think of at least two examples of ridiculous and dangerous driving I encountered yesterday while out in the car...but they are probably too dull and everyday to discuss.

Revamp to Denmark Hill station
Gimme replied to Katy Tonbridge's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Indeed! If they provide 'better access' but keep the doors the same then it won't make that much difference to the flow of passengers in and out of the station. Hopefully common sense will prevail. Maybe the new long walkways will give ticket inspectors somewhere a little more sensible to stand rather than bringing the station to gridlock when they decide to do a ticket swoop. But they won't cycle or walk... their parents will drive them from afar in their 4*4 petrol munching machines.... If only a small sector of the community are eligible then the public should object to any extension that uses public money. It also encourages the school run traffic nightmare caused by parents not sending their children to the local school and therefore should be discouraged from that point of view as well.

Mobile Traffic Enforcement - They Have to Go !
Gimme replied to Mr.Edwards's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James Barber - Any stats you know of that say what portion of the budget shortfalls are funded by traffic fines? And has their activity been increased since the budget cuts? -
At the age of 5 children have no faith (or should not have) as they are not old enough to make up their minds. Not entirely sure why a school will select pupils on the basis of their parents belief. Anyway, didn't some archbishop say that CoE schools should be opened up to children of all faiths recently? Maybe if that comes to pass, extending St Anthony's will benefit all, not just those whose parents resort to pretending to be churchgoers to get their kids in (see multiple threads on this subject, with parental confessions applenty).

How about just chucking the clothes outside the cubicle onto the wet tiles? That would stop people leaving clothes in the cubicles! Or even better... hand in clothes left in the cubicles to the front desk as lost property! I can't believe that this article has caused such a fuss. In fact I'm surprised that anyone noticed this article. The Daily Mail is a right wing rag written for 50- and 60-something women who tut and disapprove. I didn't think 'fashionable' ED was so full of that type of person. Or that it was so full of people who were likely to believe the rubbish the Daily Mail publishes. For those of us who aren't older women who tut and disapprove, here's a link you might enjoy: http://www.butireaditinthepaper.co.uk/2010/07/13/headline-lies-from-the-daily-mail/ Remember the absolute nonsense that the Daily Mail stirred up about breastfeeding in the Mind Shop....?

Once cycling round the roundabout at Deptford Church St, I slowed as a cement truck thundered up to the roundabout as I was about to pass his entrance, and he drove straight onto the roundabout without looking, talking on his mobile phone. If I hadn't slowed, looking him in the eye to see if he was going to stop, I'd be dead. My rule on a bike is that having right of way doesn't matter if you are under the wheels of a truck or a bus. Truck drivers should be much more aware of cyclists than they are but, more importantly, cyclists should be terrified, wary and totally suspicious of trucks. The cyclists have a lot more to lose than the truck drivers!

Stats for 2009 (according to paper today): Pedestrians killed by cyclists: 0 Cyclists killed by motor vehicles: 46 Good use of parliamentary time? Yes or no? Would the time be better spent forcing lorries to all fit mirrors to allow them to see cyclists in their 'blind spot' or to make cyclist awareness training part of the HGV licence test? Methinks the MP who is sponsoring this is an attention / headline seeker who thinks that this will boost their career. What next? Laws banning people using mobile phones while driving? Oh yeah, that one is on the statute book but the police don't enforce it and so many people ignore it that the law might never exist... That was another waste of parliamentary time!

Empty Properties suitable for Squatting in Dulwich
Gimme replied to LadyJane's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Great work LadyJane. You probably haven't found a property as a result of this thread but it is one of the most entertaining threads for months. Have you now moved into the derelict house on ED Grove? Someone is definitely squatting there now. Maybe too late if you aren't. As a matter of interest, stories abound of squatters who end up doing up the place they are squatting in and the owners being very pleased with the results when the squatters actually move out. Is this ever true or just urban myths? -
To all those who have said they are never being bothered by aircraft noise in ED: you are either deaf, have grown up with it or live in a part of ED that manages to avoid being directly under the flightpath. We unfortunately are not deaf, have not grown up with it and live in the part of ED which has 747s or other big planes whining directly overhead sometimes every 90 seconds (FYI - there seems to be a path down Barry Rd then cutting over Goose Green as you can see plane after plane following the same path; you never seem to see planes going directly over Dulwich Village end but it might just be lack of sight-line to that area...). For years after we moved to ED we were plagued by the noise particularly at 4am or on a sunny summers day when in the garden. For some reason we aren't so bothered by it but still aware (probably used to it more now or have forgotten what sunny summers days are like...). Thanks for pointing everyone who does get bothered by the noise in the direction of the consultation Splendid. Hopefully lots of people input to it so the Govt (who probably don't live under a flightpath therefore probably don't know that there is a problem) can see how many people in London are against increasing noise pollution in the name of "economic growth"

You never hear about greedy people taking irresponsible levels of debt on do you... Is it really true that so many people were too stupid to see past what the bank was offering and realise that they couldn't afford the loan...? Just like people blaming teachers for their children being stupid (because "NO WAY could my child be stupid given that they share my genes"), it is much easier to blame bankers for irresponsible lending (because "NO WAY could I have possibly have been so stupid as to have not been able to work out my finances. It must have been a clever scam..."). If the bank won't lend on a property, shouldn't that be a warning sign that maybe you shouldn't be buying that property... parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park
Gimme replied to dully's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
If everyone ignored rules we'd have chaos. Sainsburys created these spaces for a reason. They should either take action against abuse of the rules they set on their property or not bother in the first place. I'm sure they want mums with kids in to pay a fortune for the weeks groceries. If they drive away customers by not enforcing their own rules they will lose out. Quaverflava - go be sarcastic somewhere else. You aren't funny, haven't contributed anything to the discussion and come across as slightly childish / insecure / unhappy. -
Lordship Lane street party for Royal Wedding?

Is there also going to be a street party for the 'other' Royal Wedding on the 30th July (Zara and Mike)? If not, why not? -
