Recommended - Little Kickers Football sessions
Gimme replied to esme's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Very happy to second that. What I like is that our 2 year old hasn't just progressesed from not even being able or interested in kicking a ball to being able to dribble through cones and score in a little net, but also has been learning to take instructions from the coaches (e.g. they sit nicely, do little warm up and coordination exercises based on what the coach tells them to do - like putting a ball on their knees, then their toes, then 'stampy stamps' - and get used to the idea of being coached). Most importantly, the little ones seem to enjoy it as well. -
Friendly North Cross Road chip shop man

Does he do a king rib supper with salt and sauce? If not, any ideas where I could get one? -
Will ED and London all be shiny and in perfect working order after the Olympics? Or am I just kidding myself? Will there be a train running to London Bridge every weekend from ED after the Olympics? Will there be less roadworks and traffic delays? We've just had Black Cherry, Liquorish and CPT refurbing ( and renaming) in time for the Olympics. What is next? Dulwich Cafe on Lordship Lane? Kings X station looks nice these days and Blackfriars is almost there. Will Denmark Hill Station be ready in time? What else is being done up in time for the Olympics that we can look forward to?

Winter babies club (due Dec 2011, Jan/Feb 2012)

Hi, would love to join if anyone is still meeting up tomorrow afternoon? -
People are by nature selfish. If something doesn't benefit them they criticise it. And if it benefits them they praise it. For those of us who live just off Lordship Lane, have a pram and constantly need to cross LL - which is time consuming and dangerous (unless you want to trek an extra 400m with a pram through the crowds and pavement debris and across more than 1 sidestreet to the nearest crossing and back), the new crossings are absolutely fantastic news. For those of you that like to drive too fast down Lordship Lane or who just complain about the council spending money on anything that directly benefits you, these new crossings are dreadful news, a complete blow to the solar plexus in fact, and you are quite right to complain about them. So from those of us in the former camp, thank you so much for sponsoring these crossings James. You continue to proactively work for the residents in your wards and continue to deliver road safety improvements; we are very lucky to have you as a councillor. Hi all, hoping to come along too tomorrow am with baby (now 7 weeks old). Also hoping for more sleep tonight! Iona -
As with all driving in London, depends on timing. We have been to Polesden Lacey just south of Leatherhead in less than an hour via South Circular then A20 then M25 on a few occasions but always takes much longer to do this route at weekend if you hit Catford bottleneck after 10.30am.

Had a coffee in Il Mirto today on account of Scoop being shut. It was a bit dead but coffee was excellent! Proper strong Italian coffee. And only ?1.50! Highly recommended as long as you don't mind it being a bit quiet (other than people shouting at each other in Italian in the kitchen...).

A friend, who grew up on a Glasgow housing scheme, said the the best places to buy cannabis were the local ice cream vans. The profit margin on cannabis is apparently much higher than Mr Whippee ice cream. Not of course suggesting for a second that the ice cream van in Heber Road sells cannabis. But it is odd that they are trying to sell ice creams at 7.30pm in January....

Why would anyone need / want another chain coming into the area? Chains are a watchword for mediocaty. Is there word on the street that there is another mediocre coffee chain coming to blight Lordship Lane? One caveat...if an estate agent were to close and a coffee chain were to open, there would be few tears shed, I would hazard...Suggesting that everything is relative...

Most of the selfish people I meet in ED aren't particularly smug, rather they seem defensive and insecure... and there don't seem to be that many particularly selfish people around anyway. It seems to be a pretty good community; people let you out at road junctions, people hold doors open for others, you don't see many public disagreements, shopkeepers chat away, there just doesn't seem to be much obvious anti-social or openly selfish 'don't give a toss behaviour' that you see in other places.

Hi all, congratulations to all those who had christmas and new year babies. I have been terrible at keeping up with this thread and in all the chaos forgot to post re birth of our baby boy over 3 weeks ago now (life with 2 children has been a tad busy!). We had an unplanned homebirth as no time to get to hospital, but it all worked out well and our midwives arrived just in time! Would love to meet up next week as suggested with those that are free. best wishes Iona -
Indeed! Merry Xmas!

DulwichDeviant Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Your clearly looking to pick an arguement. Sorry mate! Is it just you who can have a point of view? Or are others allowed one? What is the point harping on about regulating cyclists when 1) it is not practical or feasible 2) most accidents are caused by vehicles not cyclists and 3) the authorities can't even regulate the use of mobile phones while driving.

DulwichDeviant Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > And make all cyclists pass test and hold a > licence. A lot cyclists have no idea how much room > a large van needs to turn. Totally agree about cyclists not knowing how much room a van needs to turn. I was amazed how much of the road a stationary white van needed one day a year or so ago when he suddenly accelerated and turned sharp right, without looking or indicating, as I was overtaking him. But not sure how a cycling test would have saved me from that broken elbow, quite frankly...

Christmas Shopping in ED - a Plee
Gimme replied to TheArtfulDogger's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just spent afternoon on LL with wife and two kids in buggy. V pleasant, thankfully no shrieking and no obviously malign feeing from grumpy singletons in evidence, contrary to sentiment in this thread. However, my word, Sainsburys was unpleasant! It wasn't buggies that were the issue, more the psychos in the cheese aisle with their overloaded trollies. Police in riot gear were sitting outside in their van waiting for it all to kick off! Perhaps we are seeing in ED a microscopic case study of our overcrowded planet. -
Parking Fines for bus lane use on Lordship Lane
Gimme replied to DishandtheSpoon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sometimes the best thing to do for your own sanity is to accept that you broke the traffic regulations, pay up, resolve not to do it again, and get on with life. I once spent a whole lot of time worrying, scheming and trying to figure out how to beat a parking ticket (loading bay, Whateley Rd, little sh*t from Sothwark parking on a scooter) and it made me more unhappy than parting with the cash did. Next parking ticket (parking in residents-only near Brixton Ritzy a mere 5 mins before the end of the regulated time), I confessed to myself I'd broken the regs and mentally moved on; that was much less stressful and made me less unhappy. -
Phil&Teds Cocoon - do you need a mattress for it?
Gimme posted a topic in The Family Room Discussion
About to buy a Phil & Teds Explorer cocoon for newborn. Can't seem to find anywhere that says whether you need to use a pram mattress in it or not... John Lewis staff also didn't know. Can anyone advise us? -

Thanks for organising, I am interested in doing this next week, the sooner the better for me i.e. Tuesday but could also do Friday. Iona -
Is anyone else getting annoyed by drunk people in pubs? They have no right to be there. Unpleasant, smelly, nonsense talking drunks. Horrible. I used to enjoy going to pubs but now they are cluttered up with drunk people.

At least there is some consultation on this scheme, as opposed to the ridiculous changes to the bins that have seen us struggling to get out of our door due to bin congestion...

What are Father Gerry's motives? Perhaps God is telling him to seek rent from a commercial organisation?

Fantastic. This is the "Celebrities I've seen in Sainsbury's" thread for the older generation isn't it! Wasn't Arthur Askey seen around here 10 years ago? ;-)

Do single men eye 35 year old women with suspicion (i.e. "do you want a husband and children within 3 years...")? Or are there lots of single men out there after 35 year old women hoping to start families..? I'm not clear what the situation is - I have a 35 year old, very eligible, tall attractive sister in law with a generous, funny personality, and struggle to understand why she isn't beating men off with a stick, but then I wonder if the 'biological clock' argument in mens heads puts them off. Any opinions???
