A couple of posts by cyclists from Green Dale mention incidents with drivers turning right from Townley into EDG. Surely, if the pedestrian facilities are timed to all work at the same time then the safest way is for the cyclists from Greendale to dismount and cross the juction as a pedestrian (pushing the bike) with all the other pedestrians. It might even be just as quick and certainly safer. But more than anything it would avoid the massive negative effects of banning traffic from turning right. Tom

1. My main objection to this is that (along with all previous such proposals), we, the rates/tax payers are not being advised of the costs - either of the costs involved in the study so far or of the overall project cost, if implemented. 2. No mention has been made of the project timescale and the hence duration of disruption to traffic. 3. It states that the proposal has evolved as a result of concerns raised by local stakeholders. How many people have raised concerns and over what timescale? Where's the evidence? 4. It states that there will be a ?banned right turn? out of Townley. This will inevitably result in traffic from Townley crossing over into Greendale to do a?U? there so that they can then turn left into East Dulwich Grove! These ?U? turns will be close to the side entrance to JAGS! This area is already massively congested with drop offs and collections twice a day! 5. It states that ?the existing shared use/pedestrian footway from Carlton Avenue into Townley Road will be removed?. Good grief, Conways only finished creating that 24 months ago at great expense! I cross this junction every day and have reached the conclusion that 99% of the improvement being proposed could be achieve by achieved by simply reworking/retiming the traffic lights to allow all the pedestrian facilities to operate at the same time ? including allowing diagonal crossing. There is no need or justification for new build?outs. Also, banning right turns into EDG will have serious unintended consequences. I sometimes wonder who comes up with these ideas at Southwark. Could it be the Conway?s representative who is embedded at the Council offices? Tom

Anyone else had post go missing over the last 10 days? We have not received 3 items that were definitely mailed to us between 21st August and 1st September. One was a package containing 500gms of composting worms - which may make their presence felt after a few more days ;)

As suggested in my original post it could be anywhere between Victoria Coach Station and Margate but most probably is in South London rather than Kent because of the height of the tower and the probability that the hoardings are screening bomb damage. Because of congestion around Victoria, coaches would park up in the inner suburbs until required. This suggests it might be close to the Old Kent Road. That aside, the EDF has a very wide catchment area with lots of willing people who will have a connection with many other parts of South and East London plus of course Kent. Offset against this is the fact that only persons of a certain age might recall the actual building even if it no longer exists. The question of the location has challenged the detective skills of several vintage bus enthusiasts for quite some time so it would be really great to solve the mystery conclusively. Tom

Here's another view of the same building in Maidstone.

It's quite a challenge, isn't it. The tower is really all we have to go on and even that may not exist today. Given that the photo was probably taken between 1940 and say 1950, it's quite probable that the advertising hoardings were screening a bomb site and certainly would no longer exist. It may even be that the tower itself was destroyed later in the blitz. But someone out there must know. Tom

They used to run to Victoria coach station so can you think of anything around there that might be where they would park up? Tom

Yes, I looked at a map of Kent and Googled towers, domes, town halls and hospitals for virtually all the towns and came up with nothing which makes me think it's in South/East London somewhere. Tom

Looking for help in identifying where this picture was taken. The best clue must be the stepped tower on the skyline. It could be above a town hall, theatre, hospital or church. Being an East Kent bus, it could be anywhere between Central London and Margate but most likely South London. For those interested in buses BFN 797 is Leyland Tiger TS8 fitted with a Park Royal C32R half canopy body. It was delivered in 1940 and was the first of a large order of which only one was supplied because of wartime restrictions. It might have been on its first trip as it looks extremely shiny. The posters behind are for Goodyear tyres and Lamb's Navy Rum. http://i1318.photobucket.com/albums/t643/savedelhi/EastKent_zpsdc73966c.jpg

Road Building - if there's nothing to build...
tomdhu replied to roadworrier's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Let's hope there is a good reason as these raised crossover cost around ?30,000 each. Just looking at the piles of new materials, it could be that they are going to make the roadway (EDG) narrower there in attempt to slow the traffic at the junction with Melbourne Grove. This is what they did 75 metres away at the junction with Gelngarry Road. They widened both pavements where the bus stop is, making it much more difficult for cars to squeeze past the bus whilst it is at the stop. The logic might be that the public transport service gets priority so that journeys by private cars etc will rarely be quicker than by bus. Even money they will do something similar further along at Hillsborough Road. -

Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible
tomdhu replied to Grotty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ordinary folks could buy houses if Govt. discontinued tax relief on Buy-to-Let borrowing. It's a silly subsidy that keeps on inflating the house price bubble. Tom -

Anyone else getting nuisance calls from a female?
tomdhu replied to tomdhu's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Delighted to report that the calls have stopped. None for the last 2 nights/days. The new phone system enabled us to bar calls from her number and it also lists all attempts to connect to us from that barred number. Whether the lady in question reads the EDF or has a friend/relative who intervened, we will never know but whatever happened, a positive outcome was achieved. May thanks to all those who offered sympathy and suggestions. Tom
