It keeps going back again and again. Isn't it something like 20 years now? Furthermore, he has tried to mislead us over support for Turkey's EU application. He told us that it would never happen but then on his last visit to Turkey, he assured the Turks that he would ""pave the road all the way from Ankara to Brussels"". Duplicitous? Not half!

Give him his due. He started out 17 years ago with a virtually zero chance of success. He challenged the Brussels unelected elite. He exposed the facts - like the Brussels budget has not been signed off by the auditors for the last 20 years. He exposed the corruption and gravy-training that goes on in the EU. He achieved his stated aim. Aside from whatever political leanings we each may have, we owe him some respect.

Robert Poste's Child Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I guess all tax treaties will be up for > renegotiation once the next PM flicks the Brexit > switch. I'm pretty sure that CGT and tax on rental income is not covered by any treaty. CGT exemption for non-doms started out in the 18th century when army officers were posted overeseas on long term tours. Tax on rental profits are just like any other income taxie the chancellor set it at any rate he wants. It's just more difficult to collect when it is a foreign company or offshore trust. Hence the best way is an annual flat rate annual tax based on the value of the property. In addition you could have a higher stamp duty rate on initial purchase if the purchaser is a foreigner or trust. Get this sorted (gradually) and ordinary people in London will be able to afford housing once more. France and Germany have an annual tax. Why not the UK??
-
...... but not for you or I who reside here in the UK and are subject to tax though. Let me tell you about my recent experience....... We looked at several properties recently with a view to purchasing and I deliberately made the point of enquiring who actually owned the property being sold. We found that more than 50% were owned by foreign residents ( ie non-doms), foreign trusts or off-shore companies. All of these owners are exempt from Capital Gains Tax on the disposal of the property plus they do not pay income tax on the rental revenue if the property is let out to tenants. This represents a massive return on capital that is "as safe as houses" -all at at a time when property is increasingly out of reach of ordinary locals. An average London starter home is valued at around ?485,000 which is circa 19 times the average salary. When I bought my first house, I was limited to 3 times salary. The situation is plainly crazy in London. This week, a leading bank in Singapore announced that it was suspending mortages for Singaporeans buying property in Lonond because of the post Brexit risks. Singaporeans already own huge swathes of London - alongside the Chinese, Arabs etc etc... Also, thousands of foreigned-owned houses in London are kept empty for around 8 months of the year and this impacts negatively on local restaurants, shops and services. Why doesnt the chancelleor impose an annual tax on foreigned owned property just like they do in France, Germany etc etc? Why doesnt the chancelleor impose CGT on property owned by off-shore interests? Something needs to be done!

Sorry to hear your news. I agree, double locking doors is most important but I would also add that it's useful to have a radio or the TV pumping out sound inside the falt/house. Doorbells with in-built camera are useful for catching the perps after the event but they are often too dim to realise that there is a camera on them so they go ahead and burgle if there is no reponse to the door bell. There is no single solution to security so strength should be in depth ie use several different systems. One quite effective external deterrent is a PIR detector that plays a recorded message. Like this.. http://www.optex-europe.com/products/optex/127-vx-402rec/ This lets them know that their presence has been detected before they have even pressed the bell to check if anyone is at home. Another way is to use a pressure switch under the door mat on the door step that activates whatever action you want to have happen. Yet another deterrent is to have a minature external camera dome above your doorway - even if it is not connected. Get a genuine one not a dummy as dummies are easy to suss out.

Property prices cooling in ED?

There was a big rise in prices up until 5th April on the back of Buy To Lets having a last punt. The reality is that since 6th April, the market has gone into reverse. And about time too. Things were getting really silly. -

No. 42 bus route extension consultation

There are already lots of buses going North up DKH- like the 176, 185, 484 and 40 to name just four. The great thing about the proposed route it gives real options to residents within reach of East Dulwich Grove so that they can have realistic commuting options. There is ony the 37 going along EDG and that basically goes West not North Plus, for people needing to visit either Dulwich Hospital or King's Coll. Hosp. it will be a real plus. -
Almost certainly squirrels.

Tail-backs all the way back to the traffic lights at Red Post Hill in mornings and evenings now. Much worse than before - as predicted. Result, more pollution from lines of stationary traffic. Not to mention the effect on the 37 bus. But then that meets Southwark's stated objective of making the roads less attractive to vehicular traffic. How not to spend ?250,000.

No problems at all with Vod.

Green Woodpecker showed up this morning. Very close to our rear window so that its red crown, black mask and green colouring were amazingly bright and attractive. Unusually it was on the lawn and then went to a raised flowerbed for more pecking around the base of plants and flowers. Have only ever seen and heard them before when they were high up on our neighbour's oak tree. Made my day!

Just a heads up for this event that is taking place a Goose Green on Sunday 10th May 2015. Attending for the first time will be local magician Barry. Herewith link to details:- http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=04284e0efa3556ff8395fd7c2&id=d8e329c09b&e=c2d1f21f71

Would it be a Dunnock that's been bouncing around our garden this last week? Grey front and head like a female sparrow but with a slender bill and longer tail. Pecking on the ground a lot around the margins. Very pronounced hopping with long hops - more so than with a sparrow. Just a single one. Any comments would be welcome.

Stay well away from these "smart" meters and stay happy. There's been several tales of woe in the national press about them- failures, inaccuracy, over-charging etc. So bad that the programme may have to be suspended altogether.

If my understanding is correct, they are part of the Urban Traffic Control System, a series of sensors which helps it monitor, control and co-ordinate traffic signal junctions and pedestrian crossings. They are usually linked by wireless to other nearby traffic lights so that traffic flow on a route can be co-ordinated. The ones at EDG/Townley Road, I believe are linked to the ones at the EDG/Red Post Hill junction The ones facing cars, at pedestrian crossings they monitor for gaps in traffic so the lights change to red when oncoming traffic is less busy, avoiding holding up too much traffic. At junctions, they detect a vehicle arriving at a red light and register the need for those lights to change to green. Where there are ones facing down towards the pavement, these detect if a pedestrian walks away after pressing the button, and cancels the lights changing. The one facing sideways onto the crossing detects a pedestrian's progress across the road, and holds the lights at red (within reason) until they make it to the other side.

Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > rahrahrah: what is the cost of a Boris Bus > compared to a normal double decker? The cost of a Boris bus is ?353,000 compared to around ?200,000 for a regular double deck bus. The difference is as a result of such items as triple entrances/exits, air-conditioning nd a whole lot of fancy frills.

One thing that emerged from the drop-in session today was that under the proposed consultation, we will lose the ability to wait temporarily (on either side of the road) after 5pm as there will be double yellow lines installed. Not much fun if you have to collect a child after 5pm who also may have musical instruments, sports gear etc etc Tom

ZBT, I am opposed also and my reasons, below, may possibly help crystallise the views of many other dissenters. 1. Southwark have confirmed that their proposed option (8A) will result in a reduction of capacity for traffic through the junction. Fact. 2. This is the inevitable result of reducing the number of lanes and having tighter corners. 3. This capacity reduction results in longer tail backs. 4. These tailbacks result in greater pollution and delays to buses, cars, cyclists and commercial traffic. 5. Southwark have gone for the most expensive option with lots of fancy new features, some never used before (cyclist gates) 6. Southwark isn't paying for it so they are happy to spend like a drunken sailor. Your/our taxes (paid to HMRC) is paying. 7. The optimum solution is Option 10B. 8. The modelling for Southwark's proposal and its design was done by Conway-Aecom. The consultants from Conway-Aecom will be hosting today's drop-in session. And yes, you've guessed it, the construction contract will go to Conways. Best to look at the data table that was posted yesterday. Here are the definitions:- MMQ= Mean Maximum Queue PCU = Passenger Car Unit DoS= Degree of Saturation If you look at Townley Rd in the AM, the MMQ on option 8A is 40.7 PCUs whereas in 10B it is 24 PCU.- ie the tailback on Townley will be almost DOUBLE. For the PM table the MMQ on 8A is 15.9 wherewas 10B gives 5.4 ie the tail back on Southwarks proposal is THREE times worse. That's just a taste but as a systems modeler, in my opinion there are some serious discrepancies with their data which (dare I say it) might suggest some of the stats have been "massaged" to fit their proposed option. They also did not issue for general release the swept curves for the turning radii for large vehicles. I obtained these and they show a serious problem with vehicles overhanging/swiping other lanes when the swing round. This is dangerous and will also cause delays. Also, unlike previous studies when the models used the swept radius of an articulated truck, this time they have only used a coach which has a tighter radius. I could go on and on but..........

fazer71 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Can anyone explain why Southwark are pushing for > the least feasible option? > > > Why would they do that???? My understanding is that the funding for this project comes out of a "special" govt fund. This fund is for selected projects with an implied requirement that the project should substantially support the new cycling philosophy. Every council loves to get extra funding that they can spend, from whatever source, and hence we have a farcical situation where a perfectly good junction is to be modified at great expense- ?220,000 no less. Hence twin traffic lanes at the junction are replaced by a single traffic lane and one cycle lane. The end result greater delays for traffic at the junction but at least the Labour Councillors will be happy as they can brag about how successful they were about squeezing money out of central government.
