Hi there. We are thinking of monthly, Will be posting next date soon, probably end of April.
-
No, thank you for coming. And thanks to all who popped down last night. And thanks to the EDT for hosting and making us feel like normal people. I am creating a WhatsApp group for those who attended but will post on here the time and date of the next catch-up of EDBT!
-
I trust my hammy attempt to elevate the status of the club has not put anyone off. Just trying to gauge numbers. Should be fun!

It is with great pleasure that I can confirm that the inaugural meeting of the East Dulwich Backgammon Club (henceforth EDBC) will take place at the East Dulwich Tavern (henceforth EDT) on the evening of Tuesday, the twenty-first of March (henceforth 21/03/23) from 1900 hours GMT (henceforth 7 p.m.). The manager of said establishment is very excited about hosting this prestigious event. I will bring a set; it's a classic Greek backgammon set. I can bring more if need be. Please confirm availability. The first gathering will be a catch-up and discussing our plans. Hopefully by the third, we can start playing the first of the four annual majors! Let's do this; it should be a lot of fun! Pan

Sorry bout delay. My mate runs EDT and has offered a part of it for our inaugural catch-up. Just waiting to firm up a date. It will be in the next couple of weeks!
-
Sorry bout delay. I will post something soon. I'm tempted by the Lordship for first dibs, lots of room about. But after the first one, we can take it on tour around the locale's boozers! Hopefully that works. Best Pan

This is a great start! Thanks for your responses. I think the best way to move forward is to just organise an evening in some pub and see who turns up and then we can discuss how to take it on. I'll go and ask around to see if anyone objects to the sound of dice on board and come back with a date, I'm thinking starting off one evening during half-term, which starts on Monday, Feb 13. Does anyone have any preferences re dates and re pubs. Best Pan

Hi, I love playing backgammon and I realise I have not played much over the past decade or so. I'm thinking of starting up a backgammon club at a local pub on a set day each month or something like that. I used to organise tournaments at an old workplace of mine. Colleagues became obsessed in winning one of the four majors -- The Masters, The Open, the World Championship and the FIBA (Federation International de Backgammon Association). Each one was subtly different from the others! Yes, I know....I'm a geek. Anyway, just gauging interest or If anyone is interested in just meeting up to play, just let me know. Best Pan

I don't think the mulletman will be welcome. Nor would Mr Dyson, or Mr Woolfson of Next or even Mr JCB.

Go to the police....what a ridiculous query.

Drive if you have a car. Use a valet service, drive to terminal, give your car to anointed firm, enjoy your holiday in the knowledge it will be there when you get back and can drive home. Same if not cheaper than a cab. www.looking4parking.com is worth a look to find deals and there always are.

June 3rd will be the last day of The Palmerston
TonyQuinn replied to DulwichFox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Absolutely right Tiddles. "Sometimes they need to know it is not ok." Guy running it may be a fine fellow, but what went on for him to get the boozer was wrong. Don't expect a boycott to drive him and his chain under, but it'll be fun trying. -
Not sure you should put your phone number out there for all and sundry to see. That's what private messages are for.

Brown bin collection - Council starting to charge?
TonyQuinn replied to slarti b's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've missed this completely. Can someone just provide me a step-by-step explanation of what's going on and what I need to do carry on getting food waste and garden waste collected as now. Currently we have a big brown bin into which both garden and food waste are deposited. Many thanks in advance. -
Gala festival in Peckham Rye park
TonyQuinn replied to DoctorM's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I didn't find the noise a huge problem. It is what it is. And festivals are part of our rich pageant. And they have to take place somewhere. So why not the Rye. The problem with this festival is I didn't know anything about it until i ran past it on Thursday. Why did they not give locals a chance to get in on a discount or advertise it locally. I saw nada. -
June 3rd will be the last day of The Palmerston
TonyQuinn replied to DulwichFox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The whole thing is a 21st century swindle. And frankly a disgrace. How can a successful and much-loved part of the community be taken away so easily. May I bring everyone's attention to what these guys who are apparently taking over say they're about. Dave Ford, who is behind this joint venture with Ei that is taking over the Palmerston, said as recently as February, the following. "We tend to take on pubs that have been shut for a while with the intention of giving the community back their local." You're a hypocrite Mr Ford. If you want to give, as you say "the community back their local," give us back the Palmerston. Until that time, I hope I see no one in whatever emerges. You don't have to call it a boycott. It's standing up for the community and its people. I suggest that when Mr. Ford's crew turn up, we throw this line back in his face, time and time again. -
Is this normal? (Man selling fish door to door)

This whole thread sounds a bit fishy to me. -
An absolute legend. Always loved going in there and chatting about this or that book and how he had the best job in the world. John will be sorely missed.

There's a very sweet little cat that's been hanging around our garden on Forest Hill Road for the past few days. Seems about 3-6 months old. Appears emaciated but seemingly has a grounding in domesticity though refuses to step inside the house, would rather sleep in the temporary bed we have made outside. Worried that it may have been abandoned, knocked on doors throughout the surrounding area. We are going to Celia Hammond today to check if it has a microchip. There is no collar. Please advise if yours.

Thanks very much for that Renata and really pleased the insane layout is finally being considered. Can you please clarify exactly what you mean by the boundarywith LB Lewisham. And who is taking responsibility as one side of Forest Hill Road at the top is Lewisham, the other Southwark. Can you also provide give me details of the relevant people at the councils to contact, the local councillors whose remit this falls under and whether Harriet Harman is the sole MP covering the area, or does it fall under the auspices of Helen Hayes in East Dulwich too? You can direct message me if need me with this information.

That junction with Brenchley Gardens is a joke. Cars dart out of Brenchley while cars bomb it up Forest Hill Road as they see two lanes, before realising it narrows. Coming out of Canonbie is hairy at best. Same applies with coming out of Honor Oak Rise and Netherby, the former has big blind spots especially as cars bomb it up Forest Hill Road. And who can ever forget the lunacy of the construct at the top of Forest Hill Road and the chicane with Honor Oak Park and Honor Oak Road - anyone remember the car that crashed into the gates at Cabrini school? Add in the fact that the road markings on much of that stretch has all but disappeared and you have a recipe for disaster. Renata we need a holistic approach to the mayhem that is that road and we need it sorted soon, cos I guarantee you things are getting worse. Please advise who we can contact.
-
I think average speed is a bit of a false statistic. The problem with that stretch of road is that there are many who go way more than that. It's a narrow road, and one which people use to accelerate. It's not steady speeding. Speak to the lollipop lady up by Cabrini school. Poor woman puts her life on the line every day. It's s scandal. Also Southwark and Lewisham have each sought to pass the buck. Terrible deriliction of duty.
-
Thanks Renata Can you please give us more details about Forest Hill Road speed restrictions. It's becoming intolerable. I would like to come and personally meet and discuss issue with whoever is looking at it.
-
On Saturday, I saw a car enmeshed in the cemetery railings on the corner of Forest Hill Road and Wood Vale. First of all I hope everyone involved is ok. I suspect the car ended up where it ended up because driver was speeding down the road and tried to overtake on the inner side where the road narrows but couldn't so ended up where it ended up. If so, this is unsurprising. I've been worried about exactly this for years now and have complained for years to Southwark Council about speeding on FHR to no avail. Imagine if you were standing at the junction waiting to cross the road. Anyway, does anyone know what happened? If it was a result of what I think it was about, I think we need to mobilize against the council(s).

ED Barber - homophobia? racism? and a bad haircut
TonyQuinn replied to Jim1234's topic in The Lounge
I haven't posted for a while but just want to say that I once went to this establishment and had to tell them to keep the noise down within seconds of entering. Shockingly loud banter....it may have been football-related but there was a nasty edge. I think someone has to tell the manager that the behaviour of the two guys in there is unacceptable. Very much doubt that either of those two guys is Mem.
