It is not just about the 'Quietway' route itself but all surrounding roads. The aim of the 'Quietway' is to allow the free flow, safe passage of cyclists along it and to (theoretically)encourage less confident people to get on their bikes. This sounds commendable I know, and it's how the scheme is being sold...BUT... the free flow of other traffic, not just on the route but all around will be affected as car, van, lorry drivers all around try to avoid the 'pinchpoints', altered traffic priorities at junctions and new turn blocks put in place on the 'Quietway' As for buses, it is Southwark's stated policy to decrease bus use and increase foot and cycle use. They have stated that the 'Quietway' supports this policy (Ask them if you don't believe me). As the buses become entangled in the traffic jams it will become less viable to use them, so you will walk or cycle instead. That's the idea! Sounds great, I know, but longer term, this will mean less buses! And hopefully you're not an older or disabled person, or someone with a buggy or some heavy shopping, or even a sore foot- goodness knows what you will do then!
