  1. If only we could. A friend last Winter brought us wool scarves from Scotland, hand loomed, thrilled, Scottish knitting, Aran and Fair Isle, Welsh Tapestry, is this all we will have left? Even Irish Linen is flax from the continent. As for hard industry, Rolls Royce, aircraft, ship building, foundries, even brickworks, all in decline or gone. This is the evolution of economics. Dyson is beneath contempt imho and now his son trails in his wake
  2. dyslexics rule K.O.
  3. meant to say - interesting post Malumbu - could you please quote the source - see what I did there ?!
  4. In years to come new houses/apartment blocks will be built with this facility - underground storage and pumps or a means of capillary action for flushing toilets. In times of water shortage and the advent of water meters, this is an excellent solve. In France we use water sparingly, as it is metered, expensive and traditional. If I am alone I don?t always flush the toilet which I have en suite. Downstairs shower room I will use the washing up water to flush the toilet - or if rain is due I have two old buckets I leave outside to fill. We have French showers - run the water over skin, switch off, soap, shampoo whatever, lather all over, switch water on. Of course it is essential to set optimum temperature initially. We have also been known to run outside starkers in a sudden summer downpour and cavort about, this is glorious. No one can see, and if they could they would be screaming. Well this post diverged a little. We take it for granted that we turn on the tap/shower/washing machine and water flows - but do we need potable water to flush away waste?

This was the slang : very Austin Powers - reading as though it has been badly translated, from what I know not.
  6. Jo R, Your grammar, spelling, syntax, slang : non specifity of a reply without offering full contact details whilst requesting those of the responding home owner, give a questionable impression.
  7. hello, it was really difficult selecting a heading - this one I hope will arrest the relevant parents attention. Do you have or know anyone who employs a black childminder, wears her hair in long multi plaits, dressed in black leggings and top, has a white toddler in a pushchair (only saw legs) a pre school white blond haired boy wearing sandals dark shorts and a red/blue? or black striped t shirt, and a pre school little boy looked Asian, possibly took the 78 from Peckham today, so could be Nunhead family, you need to PM me asap. I wish now I had taken pics and followed her home, this was 1.40 ish today.
  8. at Kelmscott yesterday, in Jane?s bedroom (lined in Willow Bough) I recognised his voice. They did not linger, an amazing synchronisation

Birds and bugs can move higher along the branches and learn to adapt.
  10. There are no sizes displayed ?! when I asked why, I was told that ? we don?t do that but if you see something you like I can find out for you what size it is ? which seems a lengthy process
  11. Why is this survey described in French ? is this a French initiative ?
  12. thank you for replies - this noisy newcomer has bought the gf flat so tenancy rules will notapply. The Southwark rules apply to construction and not diy. I was online for an hour yesterday attempting to clarify rules. I do not understand people who move into a property ina closely packed residential area whenpeople want to enjoy their gardens and balconies in this heat, on a BH weekend and make noise and diy with total disregard for close neighbours. He was working until 9pm last night. Today it was banging hammering and drilling. It is monumentally selfish - no one would care during the week. A note through the door to say, we have just moved in there will benoise and disturbance, sorry ? would have been a warning. He has been inside today Ilona but with windows open of course. We have tried knocking but no response. I will tell him that every time (every few minutes) a door slams shut it reverberates through the house. It is so thick skinned, not neighbourly or considerate. I realise that noise is relative and those of you at the PRP end could also be suffering thank you for replies and suggestions
  13. ww thank you for your reply - the flat is owned, in a road of rentals, perhaps this comes down to courtesy.
  14. Is there a curfew/cut off point for power tooling, does anyone know? I really thought he would finish at 7 but no... also does this extend to Sunday? I am astonished that anyone moving into a ground floor flat with such close neighbours would be so disrespectful. We understand that work needs to be done, but this is tortuous. We have been round to remonstrate but apparently he has ear defenders and cannot hear or chooses not to.

He was so upset. Apparently he was a VSP and I wonder if stringvest, with your heightened sensibilities and acute compassion and what we would call in the north, being soft (not a pejorative term I assure you) and feel deeply for people, animals, abstract emotions, suffer in the same way? Do not be buying into the country idyll, as joeleg carefully described, things are not always as they seem, remember the song 'how you gonna keep 'em down on the farm, now that they've seen East Dulwich'

My ability to assess and inhabit their peculiar mental mindset does not preclude my own distaste for such activities, and if you are looking to pin the tail on the donkey, you have selected the wrong candidate here. stringvest has stated his case also, thanked, acknowledged, mused, and it is about time that all would be warriors followed his good example.

  20. stringvest is moving to the countryside I am not suggesting for one moment that I am ok with lads killing pigeons Why would anyone exhort the OP to ignore me when I am the only respondent taking a long term view most people see pigeons as vermin and ok to kill these are unpalatable facts of life and you are rsponding as soft townies I fear for her and anyone who saw/heard Spike MILLIGAN?s daughter describing how, when they were children in the family car ready to be off on holiday, a bird flew into the windscreen and broke its neck

If this is how you are with pigeons in the road, what are you going to be like living in the country, with sounds of slaughter through the night, are you going to be running outside with a lantern and a stern expression? particularly when the hunt passes your door, dogs in a box on an open truck, beagles not always used unless it's a drag hunt, and oops, a fox, well dogs will be dogs ...buzzards and other birds of prey flapping past your window with baby bunnies wriggling, fixed in their claws, red kites swooping into your garden to attack, maim, carry away kittens, cats, small pet rodents, rats, mice and voles, pigeons and/or starlings in your loft, or crows as we had, sound like buffalo at 5 in the morning, making nests, then abandoning them and smelly dead birds unreachable, or the ganging up on injured, small, wounded birds by others, pecking them till they are bloody and dead, a bedraggled fox attempting to leap your fence with hounds pulling him back down and tearing him apart, crazy rabbits in the road with myxomatosis which we are assured by DEFRA does not exist any more, badgers hunted late at night, flickering lights and shouts, neighbours with Jack Russell terriers do not keep them because they are cute, roadkill, including cats, lambs with their eyes pecked out, Crows and foxes wait until the lambs are actually being born, to make their kill (did you know this), wayward dogs shot, legally by the farmer, dragged to and dumped at the side of the road, weaned/weaning calves calling their mothers who are bellowing in distress for them, never to see, lick or feed them again, milk needed for humans, bullocks for the abattoir, heifers to repeat the process, the lorry pulling out of the local farm, crammed with bewildered sheep, cattle, goats, where do you think they are going - on their holidays? the monotonous, dreary call sound of wood pigeons, will remind you nevertheless of how you head on tackled moronic youths to teach them a lesson they will never forget, because your distaste and dismay and involvement will go down a storm in the country, and don't forget that horses do not use a neat litter tray. Livestock attracts flies, blue and green bottles, blowflies big as a baby's fist, fruit attracts wasps aplenty, horseflies and mosquitos/midges abound. As your sensibilities are so heightened, you are soft hearted and further distressed yourself by attempting to call out callow youths who were having fun seeing helpless fluttering pigeons vermin or not, in death throes, it's probably better if you hurry away, and ignore beggars for the same reason and seriously consider how life in the country is no idyll believe me, for someone of your sensitivity, protect yourself better, as you will not become immune, neither will you be able to affect changes.
  22. It's probably a good thing you don't live in rural France - they just shoot rooftop pigeons and put them in the pot, and other unspeakable things the French do/eat would have you fainting. Of course they were cruel, but why would you pick up a pigeon and confront them in this way, you are not going to change anything, walk away and myob, pigeons are vermin, there is no reason to believe these daft lads will torture puppies and kittens, you are over reacting. Persistent beggars are part of life, do you not venture near the Coop on LL? or anywhere in town, they are everywhere not always obvious, and not confined to London. There again you overinvolved, offering to take the beggar to 'put money on his card' - you concerned yourself and other people's actions disappointed you.
  23. Word on the street 3 years ago was that Londis would close to enable Costa Coffee, so I suppose that was the planning permission du jour. Apart from the occasional bottle of wine, we never used it as a corner shop, far too expensive and limited. We have other similar stores along LL. Can we take 5 minutes to suggest it's replacement? Please, be uninhibited, we are open to fantasy or pragmatism ...
  24. What gender are you? Either way you need to seriously edit your posts. Besides which, some of us like clutter and don't really want a complete stranger's hands in our drawers. Thanks all the same.
  25. It all looks disgusting. You are right JandB, an opportunity lost. This is vegan food made in their own home kitchen. M&S, Sainsbury, etc., are way behind this new eating philosophy, Lordship Lane needs a dedicated vegan restaurant and takeaway.
