  1. I'd like to add my recommendation of Terry McGinley. He turned up (both times) exactly on time, and was really helpful - he suggested something better than I originally asked for, and didn't charge me for the initial visit, when he came back to do the better job the next day. Really good work (replaced our kitchen spotlights with energy efficient ones, and recommended larger spots to cover over the botched holes of previous repairs attempts). I would definitely use Terry again.
  2. Hello all - the Council has proposed a controlled parking zone in Denman/Talfourd/Lyndhurst Grove/Bushey Hill/Crofton/Shenley/Gairloch/Linnell/Oswyth Roads. Most people I've spoken to around here are against it - mainly because say there isn't a problem and if there is, it's at night, which the restrictions wouldn't help with. So I'd like to I've heard that East Dulwich successfully fought a similar CPZ proposal a while ago - does anyone know the detail or have any tips about how to fight this crazy proposal? Many thanks!
  3. I really like: Elliot/ Eliot Asher Luke Otto Oscar Jake Josh Alec (short for Alexander) Rory Good luck!
  4. Hello all, We've just been offered a place at Goose Green and I don't know anyone there at all (we live quite far away). I've just seen the last Ofsted which was a bit alarming, but I've heard things may have changed since then (2010)? I just wondered if anyone could spare some time to have a chat about the school - I'd be happy to ring you if you PM me your number. Many, many thanks!
  5. Thanks so much for the cheery message. I came to the forum as our son has been given a place there this September, and I realised I know very little about the school, which is a bit unsettling... so this message is really timely. Thanks.
  6. Hi Karen, and others interested, I went yesterday and it was a very good experience. Even if you are doubtful about the aims/ approach/ location it's definitely worth going along - I found the debate and camaraderie exhilirating. They have scheduled events, like debates, talks, music etc, so it's not just wandering around between tents. We are planning on going again Tuesday 1 Nov, if we can't go earlier. Let me know if you'd like to meet up. Thanks
  7. Yes, DJKillaQueen, I agree too. I think the council have been more than inept though... I was on a train recently and happened to overhear a conversation where a woman who works in legal aid recounted a case she had a few years ago. Basildon Council - in an attempt to get the travellers to leave - had published all the details of the travellers including their children's special educational needs statements (without being 'redacted' so all names etc were still on there). Not surprisingly, they were taken to court and ordered to pay damages to the (I think) three children involved. But it gets worse - Basildon council actually appealed against this and spent another ?18k on the appeal, to get out of paying... ?300 to each child. Shameful if true (I have no way of authenticating it, but have no reason to doubt what she was saying).
  8. Hello all, Would anyone like to meet up/ travel together to the protest at St Pauls, on Weds 26th? I went to the start of it, on Sat 15th, with my children (aged 1.5 and 3.5) and was struck by the need for more so-called ordinary people to show support, as otherwise it gets dismissed as just the usual suspects (far left agitators etc). I am impressed that people are braving discomfort, cold and inconvenience to highlight the inequality in our country and I would like to support that (if only for a bit). Would anyone like to come too? It's a bus ride - I got the 63 from Peckham Rye to near Ludgate Hill and it took about 50 mins in total. Thanks
  9. Hello all, Are there any discussions going on about setting up a Free School in the area? Either primary or secondary? And do you think there's a need? I'm actually in Peckham Rye area, with two children aged 3 and 1, and beginning to think about primary schools. It seems like a lot of people don't get any school on their list, let alone first choice, and I wondered how bad the problem is - ie would there be any children applying to a Free School if one was set up? Any information welcome, Thanks!
