Southwark Plans for Camberwell Old & New Cemeteries.

There is still time to make it to the cemeteries today and see what we are fighting for. Blanche Cameron Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries / Save Southwark Woods campaign 07731 304 966 / savesouthwarkwoods@gmail.com / www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk -

Here is a record of a servicewoman buried on the development area. She was buried with 7 others in 101/25607 on consecrated ground near Underhill Road. 131. Member WILLIAMS, EDITH OLIVE DoD: 28/10/1918 Women's RAF, 1st Stores Depot. Daughter Alice M. Greenfield, 10A, Staveley Rd., Asylum Rd., Peckham, London). (see screenshot attached.) Southwark waited until they had already brought in the heavy machinery before they contacted the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The war graves is just another reason why this project has to be stopped. Visit the cemeteries today. There is still beauty there. "the 2011 consultation was about overall strategy and it would have been premature. Now the works are getting closer, Southwark are working co-operatively with CWGC". Premature? Southwark brought in the heavy machinery last year, they are now laying out roads. To ?consult? the CWGC now is to leave to just about the last moment. And in doing so, the CWGC told them there are 48 war graves not six. If they had contacted them before, the CWGC owuldn?t be in the position they are now of having to ask Southwark not to drive roads over war graves and or leave 23 war graves without headstones. See photo attached of what Southwark is doing to the cemeteries. We support the CWGC efforts to protect the war graves which Southwark is developing over. Unfortunately, Southwark has put them in a very difficult position. Southwark has been planning this for years but is only just consulting with them now, years after the plans were drawn up and months after groundworks began. Why weren't the CGWC consulted in 2011 when Southwark was consulting on their burial strategy? Southwark should be preserving all the graves - not just the war graves - as well as the woods and nature. The cemeteries should be nature reserves, like Nunhead Cemetery. See photo below. Visit the cemeteries today. They're lovely. Here is a larger screenshot of the letter CWGC sent Southwark Council. It appears that Southwark is pressuring the CWGC to allow development over war graves. dhboy, you posted: "Clearly roads, footpaths, terraces or other structures will not be built over any grave - this is a ludicrous thing to state." Please see attached letter from the CWGC to Southwark Council regarding their proposal to put a road (or as they call it "a pathway") over war graves. "...note that grave 25680 lies directly under a new pathway on the plans which sent to dated 14.11.16, as does 25626. Would it be possible to adjust this layout so that these two burials are not built upon and made inaccessible?" Ludicrous, indeed. We do not know how 'happy' the CWGC is with Southwark. The CWGC were brought in, we believe, in 2016 and development had been going on for years. We wrote the CWGC asking Whether soldiers have been or are to be developed over? Whether all WW1 and WW2 war graves of servicemen and women will have CWGC headstones? And how is the CWGC locating families or agencies about the war graves, including at least six from Commonwealth countries including Australia and Canada. Yes it is easy to find these records. In seven years all Southwark had to do was go to Deceased Online or FindaGrave - or their own records - or call the CWGC - to find there were WW1 war graves in areas being mounded and tarmacked over, and soon dug up. Southwark knew the servicemen and women were there, somewhere - they are on the War Memorial. They just did not find out where. Instead, they chose to lay out the burial plots and the roads without checking. The names of the 131 from WW1 are here for local families to view: http://savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/missing-131-ww1-soldiers-names/4593878330 Come to our Families and Friends Day on Sunday 25th June http://savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/families-protest-grave-robbery/4593842405 Blanche Cameron Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries / Save Southwark Woods campaign 07731 304 966 / savesouthwarkwoods@gmail.com / www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk -

There are more than enough arguments to stop this project. We've just published the names of the 131 First World War soldiers missing in the old cemetery. Many, if not most, were local - coming from East Dulwich, Nunhead, Camberwell, and Lewisham. Their graves are at risk of being buried over or having roads built on top of them. Southwark Council has been selling burial plots over the dead since 2013 without locating scattered war graves. Surely you don't support burying over or building over our nation's war dead? http://www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/missing-131-ww1-soldiers-names/4593878330 Blanche Cameron Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries / Save Southwark Woods campaign 07731 304 966 / savesouthwarkwoods@gmail.com / www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk -

You made me laugh - Save Southwark?s Weeds! But mostly you?ve stopped talking about Southwark?s plans - cutting down acres of trees to mound over and dig up the dead for burial plots. The Camberwell Cemeteries Working Group is focused mainly on saving the green spaces of the two cemeteries. Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries and the Save Southwark Woods campaign are working to protect the green spaces but also all the graves and the memorials. That is why FOCC reaches out to families and friends of those buried there to inform them about what is happening. Family Day is Sunday 25th June, meet 2pm Camberwell New Cemetery Gates, info here: http://savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/families-protest-grave-robbery/4593842405 Attached is a photo today of an area in the Old Cemetery that the Working Group and FOCC are fighting together to save. The petition to save the Camberwell Cemeteries states: ?We petition the London Borough of Southwark to stop destroying trees, open spaces and graves in Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries and make the cemeteries nature reserves.? Over 14,000 people have signed our petition -- 10,000+ online and 4000+ on paper. Anyone could start a group or petition to support Southwark?s redevelopment of the cemeteries, if they desire. Southwark are supposed to have agreed management plans with the community for Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries - like they have with FONC. But they have put it off as they want to go on cutting down the trees to prepare for new burials. If you like the wild bits of Nunhead Cemetery, that is what the wooded bits of Camberwell Old Cemetery are like and they deserve to be saved too, see the photo. See you tomorrow at Nunhead Cemetery - come and say hello. Funny how times change. Southwark resisted Nunhead Cemetery becoming a community managed nature reserve - now they champion it. Camberwell Old Cemetery still has ten acres of beautiful cemetery woods. Brenchley Gardens Camberwell New has beautiful woods on One Tree Hill. Come and introduce yourself at Nunhead Cemetery on Saturday. We'll have a table on the pavement outside the main gates. Photo attached. Can you guess where this photo was taken? Penguin68: No, that's the written ruling, not the hearing. Even by the Church directions hearing in May 2016, Southwark Council still hadn't contacted the CWGC. That was the only hearing - Chancellor Petchey threatened us with Southwark's legal costs if we continued to defend the trees and graves through the Consistory Court, forcing us to withdraw: http://savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/church-wont-mention-the-trees/4592463596 This meant a full public hearing September 2016 could be cancelled - at which Southwark would have had to disclose 48 WW1/WW2 war graves on Area Z not the 6 they had listed, plus the WW1 soldier's grave on One Tree Hill Area D1. Chancellor Petchey?s Feb 2017 ruling - the first announcement to anyone about 48 WW1/WW2 war graves in Area Z ? said it would be fine not to erect CWGC headstones to any of them: http://savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/soldiers-headstones-not-needed/4593855997 Here's a photo of woods over thousands of graves that Southwark Council intends to dig up for 'new' burial plots over the dead next. Penguin, you don't seem to have read the CWGC FOI emails. You claim the CWGC are "entirely satisfied with what Southwark plans". The CWGC is even now trying to get an access road moved that Southwark plans over two war graves. They are also hoping to get more headstones put up for WW1/WW2 soldiers currently denied them under Southwark's plans. Even as recently as April, mid-development, Southwark has been trying to delay meeting with CWGC to discuss these changes. CWGC's emails and Southwark's replies are on the link button here: http://www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/southwark-dishonours-war-dead/4593850197 The woods and graves are a great memorial to all the dead here - photo attached is from this weekend. The fact that Southwark didn?t contact the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to find the soldiers? graves and include them in their plans before they started their project is just another clear reason why Southwark is unfit to run a burial service and why this project must stop. There are still acres of woods and old headstones and graves left undisturbed. Attached is a photo - it?s a lovely day for a visit. Southwark Council doesn?t care about their WW1 and WW2 war graves. All it took to check was a two minute phone call or email to the CWGC. Instead, they have spent years planning and implementing a massive multi-million pound redevelopment over tens of thousands of graves, consulting all kinds of bodies - but not the CWGC? These are the graves of hundreds of local people who died from fighting in two horrific wars and are supposed to receive special recognition for their sacrifice. But Southwark just didn?t even check - they wanted to sell new burial plots more than they wanted to respect CWGC graves. They only got caught out because they finally contacted the CWGC but not til late 2016, and already well into developing Areas Z and D1. And what about Area F/F1 along Woodvale, developed in 2013 over tens of thousands more graves? If this is how Southwark treats CWGC graves, they will do anything to sell burial plots. The woods and glades are beautiful and a perfect memorial to everyone buried here. Visit this weekend and see the beauty. The photo of the woods attached is from Thursday. "Show me one post where someone - anyone - has explicitly encouraged the unrestrained destruction of nature." But some of you seem to support some destruction of nature for new burial plots, and that is where we respectfully differ. We just got some FOI info. Southwark didn't check for First World War soldiers' graves before starting the cemetery redevelopment. And they only first went to the CWGC late last year. They were told of 48 CGWC graves in Area Z - not the six that Southwark had put on their planning application. http://www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/southwark-dishonours-war-dead/4593850197 Attached is new photo of Camberwell Old Cemetery.
