CPZ: Proposed Controlled Parking in East Dulwich
doogsey replied to dulwichresident01's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Would someone be able to explain how implementing a CPZ will increase car spaces for residents? Are a lot of cars that are currently parked in East Dulwich being parked and left on our streets by people from other boroughs, and once there is a CPZ all those cars will disappear? I'm genuinely interested to know how this works. -
Makes sense, thanks a lot!

Apologies in advance if this is not the right forum for such a question. I was hoping to get some insight into why the fuse boxes in our flat are the way they are. I have attached a photo which shows an RCD consumer unit, a Wylex / traditional fuse box, and another box which has junctions and wires. It seems fairly obvious that the box on the right is a newer unit and whenever we've had a circuit trip, we can just reset one of the RCD switches in this unit. I gather that the box in the middle is a lot older and from reading online, people replace the old fuse box with the new RCD consumer unit. The thing that confuses me is why the old fuse box is still there and wasn't removed when upgrading to the RCD consumer unit, and also what the box with only junctions and wires is for. I'm fairly certain that the old fuse box is still in use as it has wires connecting to the RCD consumer unit, however I can't be 100% sure because we thankfully haven't had to replace a fuse or had a need to switch it off. Has anyone seen a similar setup before, or know why it might be like this?

In defense of Costa, they are the only coffee chain I?d step foot in. Cafe Nero and Starbucks make atrocious coffee, at least Costa train their staff and can be relied upon to make consistently better coffee than most independent shops. That being said their food is very sub par.

Another vote for ED to London Bridge, although I would take the bus over the tube these days. Since bank junction was closed to non-bus traffic the bus only takes about 10 mins from LB to Moorgate, so should be quicker and much more pleasant than navigating the tube.

According to one of the staff, they're closing for 4 - 6 weeks and will re-open with branding from their sister restaurant (Terroirs, I think), so fear not, it is meant to be more or less the same!

They've definitely had a hard life.

I noticed a new spec 185 yesterday. Hopefully as part of re-tendering they at least have to bring in new buses? The 176 is woeful, I can't believe they upgraded the relatively new 40 last year and yet the 176 buses are still far older than the old 40s were. The 176 buses must be at least 20 years old?

Apparently a deal has been agreed!? No details though. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/feb/02/southern-rail-deal-reached-to-end-strikes-over-driver-only-trains

Having been on both sides these are the things I've picked up. Best things you can do are: 1. Ensure your living areas are aligned. E.g. don't put your kitchen / dining above the neighbours bedroom 2. Don't wear footwear inside the house, ever 3. Be light-footed when walking around. Some people naturally stomp around like elephants, and that is the biggest contributor IMO Carpet is not necessarily the saviour, especially because some areas can't be carpetted like a kitchen or bathroom so you need insulation anyway, and people might wear footwear on carpet thinking the carpet will compensate, when it'd be better to go barefoot or slippers on floorboards. Fake ceiling is one of the most expensive things to do and the least ideal for the neighbour below because they lose ceiling height, have to redecorate, e.t.c. It doesn't stop much impact noise either. When re-doing the floor, I'd recommend: 1. Re-fixing the original floorboards. These are likely to be nailed down but screws are FAR better at making the floorboards a solid base and prevent squeaking. Some builders also suggest replacing original floorboards with ply 2. You can also put insulation beneath the floorboards at the same time. This will stop a lot of airborne noise but not impact noise 3. Glue a very dense sound proofing underlay to the floorboards. The more dense the better 4. Lay an underlay for either carpet or laminate What you do after that doesn't really matter, so long as you have living spaces aligned, don't wear footwear and are light-footed.

Some of the driving around GG roundabout is genuinely shocking and it would be safer with traffic lights. Having said that, the way it is now gives priority to pedestrians and makes it feel more like a local shopping street. Switching to a T intersection IMO would make it feel more urban and prioritises cars and traffic in general. Plus I'd have to wait at lights to cross when I cross whenever I feel like it right now. As such I'd be against switching to traffic lights.

Seems like we're back to the same unreliable service now that the old timetable has been reinstated. 1730 from LB was cancelled yesterday. Now the 1851 is delayed indefinitely while awaiting crew, no sign of the 1901 and the 1911 is filling up. I don't really see what legal action will do, unless it has the power to break up the franchise and give some of the inner London routes like LB to Tulse Hill over to TfL to run an overground service. Removing the franchise from Govia or heavy fines won't fix anything.

The commons meeting is now online: http://www.parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/62ce4633-66e8-4bb4-87a2-c7f99aafbf68 I've only listened to about half of it so far. Some observations: Cheeky Chuka uses the platform to appeal for the Crossrail 2 route to serve his constituency. A passing comment was made that the franchise is too big. I'd certainly agree and I do wonder why MPs are asking for the franchise to be removed, when surely giving the franchise to someone else would not solve all the problems. If we want East Dulwich to be served by TfL Overground then I imagine this part of the franchise would need to be broken off first? A quite irate man went on a tirade on the unions position over this issue. He was very worked up indeed! I don't think Helen Hayes mentioned East Dulwich losing 75% of peak hour services (85% when compared to 2 years ago), which is the really stark statistic that never seems to get reported. If she did mention it then I missed it.

Two weeks ago on PMs question time David Cameron addressed the current state of the poor service, and said the transport minister will 'make an announcement shortly' about the situation. Well, I'm guessing this 'emergency' timetable was that announcement. As such I think this new timetable was already agreed with, and possibly even demanded by, David Cameron. lj57 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Does anyone know how long the 'emergency' > timetable is in place? Unfortunately it's indefinite. The cynic in me thinks it will never get reverted back!

So is anyone planning to get a peak hour service in the morning, or is the general consensus that any trains will be rammed by the time they arrive at East Dulwich and not worth the risk? If I usually caught the 8:30 I'd consider risking it, but I try to catch the 8:10 so don't want to hang around another 20 mins and then not be able to get on anyway. I think I'll just be going straight to Denmark Hill and into Blackfriars instead. Thankfully I'm working from home tomorrow, I didn't really want to be caught up in this mess on the first day!

It seems to be getting worse and worse. Of the 5 trains I've caught this week only 1 has been on time, 3 were cancelled and another was delayed. There does seem to be the possibility that management are preventing overtime and shift swaps which is causing the recent spike in cancellations. I really hope it ends soon. Bring on the TFL overground already!
