tempting....oh so tempting!!

It's that time of year again!! Bumping this to see if there is any more advice about snow holidays en famille? Desperate to go this season....but do the mini snowboarders get to come too?!?
-
Yep I think it's early too - but he's doing it at pre school so might as well be helpful at home!! He is at a montessori pre school so they do a lot of the tactile stuff/sand etc and they are totally cool about him doing it in his own time. The jolly phonics stuff looks fun but they specifically don't do that scheme and don't do caps or blending of sounds yet. Maybe I'll just stick up some of the letter/sound flashcards we have and see if gradual immersion helps! Thanks for all the ideas - keep 'em coming!

...3.5 yr old mini snowboarder has started phonics at pre school, and has been coming home with a little 'sound book' - to stick pictures in I think - he's not overly interested (which I don't mind/can understand!) and I actually struggle to spend much one on one time with him looking at it (work/demanding younger brother!). I was going to get him an alphabet wall frieze, then on closer inspection loads of them use capitals, and actually with phonics of course they don't learn the letters in alphabetical order. Can you buy 'phonics friezes'? Or just stick letter cards up in phonics order? Would that be a good idea or confusing in the long run? I have lots of other ideas obv that might be more fun but was going for quite a soft approach of having lots of words and letters and pictures up rather than trying to force them on him. I know he's only young etc....I'm not being pushy but just want him to make the most of what he's starting to do at pre school.

My mud stomping, fearless scooting, jumping, running, farm and woods loving small boy seems to have changed over the last 6m - he has developed a complete phobia of most animals (dogs esp) for no apparent reason, he asks to be carried the whole time, he won't go exploring in the woods (jumps into his little brothers buggy, scared of the gruffalo app). It's driving me a bit mad as everythings a drama (more than ever before), and also we're not having the fun we used to!! What's going on, has it happened to anyone else, and will it change please?!? This time last year he was riding on rollercoasters at a theme park and holding baby goats...today he had to be carried around a country walk and had hysterics at a horse..!

I obviously haven't been for a long time but this group was pretty much the highlight of my first year with first baby - truly a time for mums with little babies to sit and chat and feed and have tea, with some mats and baby toys (no singing/massaging etc required!). Alice is lovely and there are always nice biscuits! Highly recommend. -
To reassure - my first son (now 3!) napped like that, generally in his buggy. At 11m I launched nap-gate, and persevered with an iron will (but he did not self settle and did not sleep at night, so the stakes were somewhat higher!!). It actually took about a month of being tediously regimented about it, and then remained failry strict on napping mostly at home etc. Having an early lunch helped... Good luck...we didn't have to face nursery but I understand they keep going much better there!!

Hmm. Maybe find a quiet week and try to be really strict about timings? Like a 9am and 1pm sleep. The challenge is to do a morning nap - go out for a bit to park/group, get back for lunch (without crashing in buggy!), lunch and then down for nap. If she wakes after 30/40 mins maybe don't rush to get her for and see if she will settle back?

At home nap times does she settle herself to sleep in her cot?

Back to work - please tell me it'll be ok

SW - not surprised you are finding it tough - 5 full on days with all the family stuff too is a massive change!! I've only been out 3.5 yrs, have childcare in my house (no drop off etc), smallish children AND only doing 2 days and it's been an adjustment - things still feel a bit out of control 2m in! GOod luck and keep going - am sure it will all slip into place. -
Would you have a male childminder?
snowboarder replied to nubby'smums's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would love a male nanny/teacher for my sons - already my eldest at 3.5 thinks that daddys go to work and mummys look after children at home and at nursery....really! As others have said I think it would give them a very positive role model. However (for absolutely no reason that I can articulate) I might not for a much younger baby...I'm not sure why... -
Stupid question about beds!

Ikea do a 160cm fitted sheet but all their childrens duvet covers full size!! I think.... -
Stupid question about beds!
snowboarder replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Yep that was my default option - just thought a full single duvet would be enormous on a 170cm length mattress? -
Sorry - feeling a bit thick but HELP. Looking at bunkeds for the small snowboarders....thought I'd found a good thing with a 2'6 short set - so thinner and shorter than a standard single. But I can't find any bedding (duvet/covers etc) that is smaller than a standard single but bigger than a cot bed? Am I not looking properly? What do people do?

There's babynest (I think!) near Croydon - on the roundabout on the way to ikea - call them to find out what they have? -

Who is the resident cloth nappy guru these days?!?
snowboarder replied to snowboarder's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ok thanks - not too much has changed!! Easyfits were my fave previously and I still have a few bg left so I'll have a try out - need to get some paper liners. I still think velcro as smallest shows no signs of being a nappy escapee but he is a change refusenik and I have to be FAST - I can never get poppers right, just fumble, and there is no time for that with the writhing screaming youngest snowboarder! -
Having used full time cloth with my first, I failed miserably with baby 2 - now 19m. He's probably got at least a yr left in napiies and I was thinking of trying to go back, but expect the nappy world has moved on! Basically I want a really slim velcro nappy that can either use disposable inserts or v easy to put paper liners in. I'm not scraping poo off!! Any advice?
