Essential shops (other than food) needed in ED
Bozza replied to chica1's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As mentioned above there is a shoe repair shop in the dry cleaners next to the Post Office on Lordship Lane. I have used them a couple of times and been happy with the result. -
Rather than joining a gym I would recommend: British Military Fitness They will in the next few weeks alos offer sessions on Peckham Rye. I attended my first session today and it was great (first session is free - see details on the web site)
-
I can recommend Cafe 2050 on forrest hill road they have both power sockets and free wi-fi. Theay are also on the shortist for best brownies in ED Best Brownies in East Dulwich
-
I'd like some really good coffee, for me the best coffee in london you'll find at: 'Caff? Vergnano 1882' - next to royal festival hall. 'Flat White and Milk' in Soho alos do great coffee. I'm also a fan of: 'Le Pain Quotidien' Ok 2 of these are chains and I'm not great fan of chains - that said if you could offer somthing along these lines that would be great.

train from peckham rye to blackfriers (about 15 min) walk up to st pauls jump on central line to oxford circus

Here is a brief comparison: * last.fm limits the number of times you can listen to a song for free * Spotify inserts adverts between songs * last.fm generates a radio station based on an artist or a tag; so you won?t just get songs from the artist you named, you?ll also get songs from other artists. Spotify lets you play specific artists only, or just specific albums * last.fm automatically ?scrobbles? your music and lets you re-find things you?ve played before * last.fm puts a lot of focus on the social elements, on sharing what you?ve scrobbled, on scrobbling in groups. It?s just as much social network as it is music service * Spotify does the reverse, it puts the focus on music. There are social aspects to it, but you have to hunt them down (they?re not obvious to start with) From: Spotify Vs Last.FM

I think they are pretty similar. can you set up a playlist on last.fm?

here are other alternatives: Bus 37 to brixton (about 15 min), Victoria line to Oxford Circus. Bus 363 or 63 to Elephant & Castle (about 25-30 min), Bakerloo line to Oxford Circus Train from Peckham Rye or Denmark Hill to Victoria (12-15 min), Victoria Line to Oxford Circus Train from ED or Peckham Rye to London Bridge (12 min), Train to Charing X (abt 8 min) then walk or jump on bus

How lucky am I?! Last Sunday I went on bus 185 from central London and when I got home noticed that I had lost my wallet. Rather annoying for all the hassle and all and in particular as it was special gift. Having cancelled all my credit cards and registered with TfL and the police I thought it would be the end of it. Well, can you believe it. Yesterday I got a letter from my bank that someone had handed it in and I could come and collect it. Well, there it was. All cards and content as I had left it in my pocket. Bank did not keep a record of who handed it in so please drop me a PM if you are the kind person and I'll be delighted to send you some sort of token of gratitude!!!! Thank you, I have to say in these unrestful times it is great to live among such honest and helpful people!

Jeremy, thanks - will ensure to pay better attention the 'curry burp test' next time! I will eventually give it another go as while I thought it was good I did not think it was fantastic (e.g. similar to Pistacchio Club mentioned above but a bit more upmarket if such a term applies to a 'english high street curry house'). Thinking back, the food we had at Ganapati on the other hand was fantastic (just a shame that the overall service/ambiance experience let it down). Even brought back memories from trip to India a few years ago.

Went for run with EDF runners past the shop earlier this evening. Looks like they have a nother few days to go.
-
Walked by new bakery called Lucas on LL near Moxtons and asked guy (possibly the owner) working there when they are opening. They are aiming for Wednesday (ie tomorrow) apparently!
-
There are alos a a few nice cafes and deli that have opened near the station.

Based on recommendations here we tried Omrith for take-away (well delivery) the other night and was not disappointed. In fact it was one of the best take-always I have had for a very, very long time. In particular veggie dish was very good (very fresh and not overcooked). The chicken dish was very nice as well. For those who still put your bets on Tandoori Nights. Can you please explain why - I agree that the service good (if you can get a table) but why do you want to sit packed like sardines when to me the food is just similar to the rest? I'd be happy to go again but could anyone in the ?fanclub? tell me if there is a specific dish I need to try?!

I think Green and Blue on LL do 'wine at retail price' on Mondays or Tuesdays (offer still on?). Ok, this will still be more expensive than Wetherspoons as bottles start at about ?10 but at this price you get good value for money. To go with the wine, share a platter for about ?7.5. Alternativly go to the Thai retaurant on North Cross road and bring your own drinks. Book ahead as they are quite busy.

Thanks, will try Omrith next!

I think I have tried almost all curries on Lordship Lane. In my opinion they are all very similar and I just cannot pick a clear winner. Have also not had a bad experience so far. So in one way very good that they all hold a good standard. In another way a bit disappointing; variety would be nice (well not on quality but at least on style / cuisine). Many people think that Tandori Nights is the best but to me they are just a few pounds more expensive and not that much better, also it is very cramped in there and you while they may be more professional in the way they provide service you also feel a bit rushed. Ok, I have not tried Bombay bicycle club yet that cannot really compare as they only do delivery. So from following this thread I thought it was time to try something new so we went to Ganapati which technically is not in ED but only a few minutes away. The food was excellent and focusing on south Indian food certainly different. So food-wise this would be my top choice. In terms of ambience, service and price it is unfortunately another story. Ok, it is not expensive for what you get but the service was a mixed experience (e.g. the waiter said ?time is money? when you asked for another minute to order, and ?that?s ridiculous? when you say you are too full for desert ? I guess it was a joke but still). The other person who served us did a very good job of explaining what we had ordered so maybe just inconsistency rather than across the board. Also in opinion the ambience feels dated. Don?t get me wrong, I like alternative and bohemian to some extent but this was just not right for the price bracket / location. So for great food (possibly the best around ED) head to Ganapati but don?t expect slick service and ambiance that match the price you pay for.

Is there any decent coffee in East Dulwich?
Bozza replied to Clare11's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Overall cafe experience and value for money I would say Cafe 2050. In terms of Coffee, I think Blue Mountain does a rather good job, I normally drink espresso macchiato so have not tried that many lattes/cappuccinos in ED. Although this week I tried a ?flat white? from the retro silver van on North Cross Road mentioned above and it was really good. (tu) Having said that, I do not think that it is very environmentally friendly to use a petrol/diesel fuelled generator to power the coffee machine. (td)
