Annoying words that have cropped up in our language
BrandNewGuy replied to malumbu's topic in The Lounge
From another thread: ?be on the right side of history?. Urgh! It's as if we're all inevitably on some lovely upward path to enlightenment. A fatuous reading of history, morality and 'progress'. -
Well, if you are a shareholder, you've made a pretty p*sspoor investment given the performance of the rest of the stock market over the past eight years.

They're a recent species on these shores, but they'd only be regarded as 'invasive' if they pushed any indigenous species out of their ecological 'niches'. There's no evidence that they do that, so as far as I'm concerned they're welcome.

... especially if the something or other is 'artisanal'. -

The bizarre thing is that's been the case for at least 20 years... -
Price of a pint of Beer in the Lane
BrandNewGuy replied to JCoftheN's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As Foxy says, there is perfectly good ale on sale at less than ?4 a pint. And these days there are lots of different beers available with lots of different strengths, so without knowing what you're buying, just saying "?6.50 for a pint of beer" doesn't tell us very much. It's like saying "?15 for a bottle of wine". -
The council have the responsibility of keeping it clean - and it's great to have space for wildlife and people that isn't a manicured park. We're incredibly lucky to have such a quiet open green space. Let's keep it that way.

I'm not sure about "doing fine and dandy". The development was absolutely integral to the planned long-term financial viability of the club in its present location. Delays and lack of news don't help that situation.

I can't stand that either. -

"Cost of living crisis". Just say "inflation". We're not stupid. We know what that is. -

I know I risk sounding like a stuck record, but follow the money... The ED Grove / Townley Road / Green Dale junction was redesigned because there was a large sum available from a London-wide cycling initiative from Boris Johnson when he was Mayor. The council wouldn't have even thought of altering that junction, but when a six-figure sum was dangled in front of them, they grabbed it and came up with a bunch of post hoc justifications for the redesign. Plus ca change...

There are no fireworks at Blackheath or Southwark Park this year.

Our bit of southeast London has had significant residential development over the last twenty years or so. The demand for water has increased and the old infrastructure is not fit for purpose, particularly with increases in mains pressure to compensate for the increase in demand in what is a hilly area. Yes Thames Water want to deliver profits to their shareholders, but the infrastructure problem is a nightmare and all they can do is patch it. There's no indication that pre-privatisation Thames Water was going to confront the issue either.

Not necessarily. Autumn tadpoles can effectively 'hibernate' at the bottom of ponds and complete their development the following spring.

... and as heartblock says, these days they're incredibly easy to use, as I found out doing a First Aid course. Amazing technology that guides you through what you need to do. But learn CPR too ? that's also easy and a life-saver: -
Pheasants have been seen on and off near railway lines, eg Green Dale - they use the green embankments as 'corridors' - but PRP is a long way from a railway line. Maybe the shooting fraternity have been stocking the park with pheasant pullets and are planning an autumn shoot or two... anyone fancy being a beater?

There was no mention at the time that their removal was covered by those funds.
